1 Trash Each Germantown household generates an average of two tons of household trash each year. Household trash should contain only those items that cannot be recycled. Collection occurs once a week. For a schedule, call or cjones@germantown-tn.gov. Back-Door Collection Curb-Side Collection Germantown provides back-door collection for household garbage. Back-door trash will be collected only from containers 45 gallons or smaller and weighing less than 50 pounds. Garbage, preferably bagged, must be inside containers with lids. Collectors will not pick up material (bagged or not) outside the container. Excess trash must be taken to the curb. Containers must be in an accessible location with no pets or locked gates. Containers over 45 gallons, cardboard boxes, recycling, yard debris, furniture, appliances and homeowner-generated building materials must be placed at the curb. Place all trash at the curb by 7 a.m. on collection day, but not before 6 p.m. the day before collection. All containers must be removed from the curb by 8 a.m. the day after collection. Wood from fences, landscape timbers, construction debris, furniture, household garbage or other bulky items must not be mixed with yard debris. Call the day before collection to arrange pick-up for large items. Removal of contractor-generated construction debris is the responsibility of the contractor/homeowner. Residents may purchase their own containers or lease a 95-gallon roll cart from All Star Waste systems. PRESORTED STANDARD U.S. POSTAGE PAID GERMANTOWN, TN PERMIT NO. 5 Household Trash Collection When a holiday occurs on a weekday, household collection occurs one day later than normal for the remainder of the week. New Year s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day are designated trash collection holidays. While the City offices are closed on Presidents Day and Good Friday, trash is collected on the regular schedule. City of Germantown 1930 S. 3 G e r m a n t o w n R e c y c l e s Yard Debris Recycling yard debris keeps about 28,000 tons of grass clippings, tree branches and leaves out of local landfills each year. Vegetative matter is collected and recycled into compost and mulch. Free mulch is available to Germantown residents twice each year. Yard debris is vegetative matter such as grass, leaves, shrubs and limbs and must be placed in clear plastic bags; filled bags should not exceed 50 pounds. Yard debris is collected with a mechanical arm and must be placed at the curb and away from stationary objects such as a car, mailbox, utility pole, fence or fire hydrant. Do not place yard debris under low-hanging trees, under wires or in the street. Do not place loose yard debris in cans or containers. Small debris must be bagged. Large limbs and other natural landscape materials, such as dead shrubs, should be stacked at the curb. Small loose piles of debris may not be collected. Separate yard debris from other yard trash including household trash, wood and landscape timbers, plastic pots and fertilizer bags. The City will collect tree limbs cut by residents. Contractors are responsible for removing debris resutling from their work. Christmas trees may be deposited at the curb with yard debris for recycling. L a w n T i p s a n d GrassCycling Why go through the hassle of bagging grass clippings when it s not necessary? Grass clippings left on the lawn decompose and act as a natural organic fertilizer, reducing the amount of commercial fertilizer needed. The lawn will remain healthy and green because each time it s mowed, valuable nutrients return to the soil. Any mower can recycle grass clippings. Just remove the grass catcher. Never cut more than 1/3 of the grass blade in one mowing. Keep grass mowed to 2 in early spring, gradually raise the height to 3-4 by summer, then gradually reduce to 2 by late fall. Keep the mower blade sharp. Dull mowers tear the grass blade, injure the plant and cause a brownish cast to the turf. If the grass gets too high, mow the clippings a second time to further shred and scatter them. Mow when the grass is dry. To prevent excess growth between mowings, raise the mower height, mow, then gradually lower it over a span of several mowings. This will help prevent shock to the plants. When it s time to replace a mower, consider a mulching, recycling or nonpolluting reel mower. All do a good job of shredding and scattering grass clippings.

4 R e d u c e R e u s e Recycle The following items can be recycled. Recyclables must be placed in a City-issued recycle bin and at the curb prior to 7 a.m. on collection day but not before 6 p.m. the day before collection. 5 A m n e s t y Dumpster Day For unwanted items not picked up by All Star Waste Systems, Amnesty Dumpster Day is a free event that occurs on the third Saturday each April and September at Germantown Public Works Complex and Johnson Road Park. Acceptable items include building materials, fencing, wire, steel poles, up to four tires without rims, concrete, dirt, rocks, lawn mowers, bikes and grills. Scrap metal will be recycled. At Johnson Road Park, shred and recycle up to two bankers boxes of personal documents and recycle electronic equipment. Cell phones, printers, computers, copy and fax machines and one television and computer monitor per household will be accepted. Hazardous waste, such as paint, chemicals and medical waste, is not accepted. H o u s e h o l d Hazardous Waste Shelby County operates a Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 6305 Haley Road in Memphis. The service is open to Shelby County residents on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Acceptable items include aerosol spray cans with contents, automotive fluids, batteries, cleaning products, construction and home repair products, adhesives, electronics (one per family), flammable liquids, propane tanks, plumbing solutions, lawn and garden products, paint and pool chemicals. For a more detailed list, visit shelbycountytn. gov. No commerical waste is accepted. O t h e r Materials Items containing refrigerants such as refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners require certification from a licensed technician stating that the refrigerant has been removed. Once certified and tagged, state law requires doors be removed before refrigerators and freezers are placed at the curb for pickup. Call to schedule a large item pick-up. Carpet, fencing, siding, sheet rock, cabinets, commodes and other homeowner-generated debris and clean out trash will be picked up from the curb on regular collection days. Sand, dirt, mulch, gravel, concrete, bricks, stone, sawdust, steel, steel poles, tile, auto parts, roofing, shingles, glass, mirrors and lawn mowers are not collected but are accepted at the semi-annual Amnesty Dumpster Day event. Homeowners are responsible for properly disposing of medical waste including syringes.
