4 Why Stainless Steel Doesn t Rust Stainless steel is a different kind of alloy. Along with iron and carbon, it also has nickel and chromium in it. Nickel and chromium have an interesting difference in chemistry, compared to iron. They too, react with oxygen to form their oxides. But there is a major difference. These oxides are very sticky, and they form a thin film around the stainless steel vessel. They do not dissolve in water, and do not come off even if you scrubbed the dish hard with a scouring pad. Because of this, once a thin layer of oxide has covered the vessel, the rest of the material will be cut off from the air. It will therefore never rust, and remain as strong as ever. 5 What is the difference between an undermount and a top mount sink? A top mount sink is a traditional sink where it drops in and the rim of the sink sits directly on the countertop. An undermount or undercounter sink is mounted from the bottom of the countertop so you don't see the sink rim. You may use either type of sink, but many people opt for the undermount with natural stone for ease of cleaning. If you have an existing sink you would like to use, you may do so, however it has to be used as a top mount. We cannot convert a top mount to be used as an undermount. If you are purchasing a new sink, be sure to buy an undermount if that is how you want the sink mounted. Also, refer to our helpful hints to ensure your sink will fit in your base cabinet. If you chose a top mount sink, you may not convert to an undermount at a later date, so give it some serious thought before choosing your sink.
