2 GENERAL The Arabidopsis chamber is a climate cabinet, in which temperature, humidity and light is controlled by the JUMO IMAGO 500 process controller. The controller works in real time and checks the temperature and humidity at fixed time intervals taking action when necessary. When no cooling or humidification is required, the compressor will run in a bypass system. This system contributes to a longer lifetime of the compressor. The fluorescent tubes are located inside the working area. The air inside the cabinet is heated by an electrical heating element. The cooling and humidification is controlled by a CFC-free cooling system. A Stulz humidifier humidifies the air with in the chamber. The door can be locked with a key. 3 LIGHTING The working chamber is split into 3 equal compartments, each with 4 fluorescent lamps, Brite Gro colour 2084 (daylight). The interior of the Arabidopsis cabinet is made of Stainless Steel coated white. The cabinet is mounted on 4 dual wheeled swivel castors, the front with brakes. Based on 4 lamps per platform, Sylvania 36W/2084: On the following page you will find the measurements of standard chamber, these standard light intensities are enough to grow Arabidopis plants. 5 HUMIDIFICATION The Microclima Arabidopsis cabinet has a connection for direct water supply at the rear of the cabinet. If the water is harder than 100 ppm partial solids then treated water is recommended, e.g. reverse osmosis. When there is no direct water supply to the cabinet, it s possible to attach a water tank (optional) to the rear of the machine. The income pressure must be between 1 and 4 bar. The Arabidopsis cabinet is fitted with a water outlet, which is situated on the bottom plate at the rear of the cabinet. This outlet is brought down to the base of the cabinet by means of a hose; so all the water can be drawn off. Note: Snijders Scientific advises to use softened water. You can also use demineralised water, when the ph value is not below 6,5. Tap water with a hardness of more than 4 D will influence (shorten) the lifetime of the humidifier. 7 Controller With the controller it s possible to set the temperature, humidity and light. The lighting is divided over 3 different contact groups, which can be set independently of each other. The controller allows settings of 50 different programs. Each program can contain a day/ night cycle, in which different steps, both in the day and night period, can be performed. Each program can operate continuously or can be repeated a number of times (between 1 and 99). An acoustic and visible alarm will be given in a alarm situation. For example when the temperature or humidity deviates 5 C or 5% respectively from the set point (above as well as below). A potential free contact is standard and is located at the rear of the cabinet. When there is an alarm situation this contact will switch and an external alarm system will be activated. 9 PLENUM: The cooling system is using 100% CFC en HCFC free refrigerants. The Danfoss Optyma compressor and condenser is quiet, energy saving and has a long life term. This climate chamber has a Stulz ultrasonic humidification system but also dehumidification. The heating, cooling and humidification system can be found in the bottom of the cabinet.
