For your personal safety, the compactor must be grounded. In the event of an electrical short circuit, grounding reduces the risk of electric shock by providing an escape wire for the electric current. This appliance is equipped with a polarized 3-prong grounding plug. It must be plugged into a correctly polarized mating 3-prong grounding type outlet, properly installed and grounded in accordance with the National Efectrical Code and local codes and ordinances. 4 How the compactor compacts Compactor ram in lowest position This trash will compact later A ram inside the compactor forces trash down to about one-fourth its original size by using pressure The ram does not go to the bottom of the drawer. Because of this you will not see compacting the first few times you run the compactor. However, this trash will be compacted later The container must be at least one-third full of loose trash before you notice any compacting. IMPORTANT: E> Glass bottles, jars, and other glass containers will sometimes break with a loud noise. This is normal. Because other trash cushions some glass containers, all bottles may not break. By the time the trash bag is full, trash is compacted to about one-fourth of its original bulk.
5 How to operate compactor 1. Open drawer and Model Series use the STEP-ON drawer opener or the drawer handle In y % 1 m K 2. Load trash.» Load any trash, wet or dry, into the compactor» Spray cans and containers that contain poisonous or explosive chemicals should not be loaded in the compactor. (See page 11) Wrap really messy trash.» Load cans and bottles on their sides in center of compactor (as illustrated) so drawer will not pop open If these containers are not loaded properly, the trash will not be compacted. Odor causing items such as raw meat, fish, grapefruit rinds, personal hygiene items, and diapers should not be loaded in the compactor. 3. Close drawer COMPLETELY and turn keyknob momentarily to START. 4. The ram will go down, then back up and shut off automatically. Remember the first few items in each bag won't be crushed until later. 5. When bag is full, remove it and install new bag (See next page for complete instructions.

KENMORE COMPACTOR BAGS Designed to fit Easy to install Tough and leak resistant Buy Compactor bags in the Appliance Deptat your Sears store or from the Sears catalog.
7 Extra Pac Cycle and Model Series The EXTRA PAC Cycle is a convenience feature that allows you to use fewer bags or extend the use of a bag until trash pick up day EXTRA PAC Cycle puts constant pressure on trash to keep it from springing back Regular use of this feature can increase bag capacity up to 20% To use EXTRA PAC Cycle Push cycle control to EXTRA PAC. Turn the key-knob to START and release The ram will stay in the down position for extra compacting. Remember the drawer cannot be opened. <> On models and the EXTRA PAC Light goes on o For best results use EXTRA PAC for at least one half hour or overnight. o To raise the ram, turn the key-knob to START or push the cycle control back to NORMAL. - On models and EXTRA PAC Light goes out. NOTE: Fully compacted trash bags will be heavier than normal Handle with care.
8 More Features Automatic Liquid Deodorizer System and Model Series This deodorizer system helps control odors automatically A small amount of deodorizer is released every time the drawer is closed To control strong odors, open and close the drawer several times To install deodorizer can: Put deodorizer nozzle into plastic holder Push can into place. Because the deodorizer is liquid, it is subject to freezing It will not dispense at temperatures below 32 0 F {0 o C). Use Sears Compactor Deodorizing Liquid available at Sears stores and through the Sears catalog. CAUTION: Do not store anything behind spray can Items behind spray can could cause compactor to jam. Bag Away Bag Caddy and Model Series Fits right inside the compactor drawer Helps make removing and carrying full compactor bag a simple task Solid Air Freshener System Model Series The solid air freshener system is designed to help control odors that might develop from the trash. Use disc-shaped or any of a number of solid air fresheners available from your grocer. Follow air freshener package instructions. Check the air freshener occasionally It should last about 4 to 6 weeks. To install solid air freshener: Raise the door. Put in solid air freshener Set dial to NORMAL Move to MAXimum or MINimum if needed This solid air freshener is used more rapidly when (1) fully exposed, (2) temperature is high, or (3) air is very dry Compartment is easily removed for cleaning simply pull forward at top edge. n Tilt Open Drawer Release the drawer side latch and the right side of the compactor drawer tilts out. This relieves bag pressure and permits easy, convenient slide-out removal of full bag.
9 REMOVE ROLLERS LEVELING LEGS Key-knob control can be removed when in REMOVE position. This is a safety feature intended to prevent small children from operating the compactor. NOTE- Your compactor comes with an extra key for your convenience Model Series Rear rollers make the compactor easier to put into position. Front leveling legs make it easier to level the compactor. Remember, the compactor must be level to operate properly. The textured steel top resists smudges and fingerprints. Helps keep your freestanding compactor looking clean and smart. There are two switches that are engaged when the drawer is completely closed. One switch is located at the front of the compactor, the other on the back wall. Both switches must be engaged or the ram will not go down. This prevents the compactor from operating unless the drawer is completely and properly closed and Model Series Provides convenient, no hands drawer opening. Just press down on the full-width Step-On Drawer Opener and the drawer slides open 13305,13501 and Model Series Change front panel color anytime to match kitchen decor. Or create a custom look to match cabinets, etc. See next page for full details.
