4) Safety This heater is designed for a variety of loads. Because of this, it is possible that voltages higher that those applied can be present inside the heater and at external connections of the heater. Work on the heater s internal systems should only be attempted by highly trained technicians and only when power has been disconnected and cannot be reconnected to the unit. IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS When using electrical appliances, basic precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, and injury to persons, including the following: 1) Read all instructions before using this heater. 2) This heater is hot when in use. To avoid burns, do not let bare skin touch hot surfaces. Use handles when moving this heater. Keep combustible materials, such as furniture, pillows, bedding, papers, clothes, and curtains at least 6 feet (1.8 meters) from the exhaust of the heater and keep them away from the sides and rear. 3) Extreme caution is necessary when any heater is used by or near children or invalids and whenever the heater is left operating and unattended. 4) Remove all animals and plants from area to be heated 5) Always unplug heater when not in use. 6) Do not operate any heater with a damaged cord or plug or after the heater malfunctions or has been dropped or damaged in any manner. Discard heater or return to authorized service facility for examination and/or repair. 7) Do not use outdoors. 8) Do not use in wet or moist locations 9) This heater is not intended for use in wet indoor environments. 10) Do not run cords under carpeting. Do not cover cords with throw rugs, runners, or similar coverings. Do not route cords under furniture or appliances. Arrange cords away from traffic areas and where it will not be tripped over. 11) To disconnect heater, turn controls off, then remove plugs from outlets. 12) Do not insert or allow foreign objects to enter any ventilation or exhaust opening as this may cause an electric shock or fire, or damage the heater. 13) To prevent a possible fire, do not block air intakes or exhaust in any manner. Do not use on soft surfaces, like a bed, where openings may become blocked. 14) A heater has hot and arcing or sparking parts inside. Do not use it in areas where gasoline, paint, or flammable liquids are used or stored. 5

15) Use this heater only as described in this manual. Any other use not recommended by the manufacturer may cause fire, electric shock, or injury to persons. 16) Always plug heater directly into a wall outlet/receptacle. Never use with a re-locatable power tap (outlet/power strip). 17) This heater includes a visual alarm to warn that parts of the heater are getting excessively hot. If the alarm light goes on, immediately turn the heater off and inspect for any objects on or adjacent to the heater that may cause high temperatures. DO NOT OPERATE THE HEATER WITH THE ALARM LIGHT ON. 18) SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS. a) Power connections WARNING! ELECTRIC SHOCK HAZARD. All power connections must be connected or guarded. Failure to do so will expose operators to possible shock and the possibility of grounding-out or shorting-out of the test power source. b) Control power Use 120V type S or type SJ jacketed cord to a wall connection. Cord and service rated to 15 AMP minimum. c) Air intakes and exhaust ports Caution! All air intakes and exhaust ports must be clear and fully open. This heater has one air intake designed for proper air flow. Reducing or blocking air flow will lead to overheating and heater failure. High volumes of cooling air are needed to prevent load elements from overheating. By their very nature, resistors under load convert electrical energy to heat. This heat must be removed from the unit. The blower, intake, and exhaust ports are sized to provide the proper amount of cooling air. Preventing or limiting air flow will allow the heater to overheat. To increase the life of the load elements, allow the fans to run at least three minutes after the load is removed or until exhaust air is cool. No ductwork is permitted on intake or exhaust of this heater as this will cause a backpressure and ruin the resistors. Caution! Material can be moved by intake air or exhaust air. Failure to secure material could cause injury to bystanders or damage to the heater. 6

Good air flow keeps the heater cool but can very easily move light debris such as paper, cardboard, and dust with great velocity. Loose materials around the heater, especially near the intake and exhaust, must be secured to prevent movement. Material on the exhaust side may be blown into and injure a bystander. Material near the intake may be taken into the heater damaging internal components. d) Exhaust temperature WARNING! FIRE AND BURN HAZARD. Keep flammable material at least 40 feet away from the heater. A great deal of heat is expelled from the heater. Temperatures inside the heater are sufficient to ignite flammable fumes or materials. Failure to maintain proper housekeeping and properly securing flammable material could lead to fire, burns, and/or injury. Even with sufficient air flow, internal component temperature will exceed 400 F. Exhaust air temperature rise of 100 F can be achieved at full power. Flammable materials must not be kept around the heater. Heat from the heater could ignite this material. e) Connecting and disconnecting WARNING! BURN HAZARD. Attempting to connect or disconnect leads while heater is in operation can lead to severe injury or death. Connecting or disconnecting plugs and receptacles while current is flowing or voltage is present may cause arcing. Arcing can generate a great deal of light, heat and possibility of electrocution. 7

5) Operation a) Pre-startup 1. Check housekeeping in the operational area and correct all unsafe conditions. Failure to do this may result in debris being blown around and may cause a fire hazard. 2. Position heater so that air will flow freely into the intakes and out of the exhaust port. 3. All air intakes and exhaust ports must be clear of any blockages or debris. 4. For best results it is recommended that all doors, window, vents, and air conditioners in the heating area be insulated b) Startup and operation 1. Connect the 120VAC plug to the right most receptacle to power the controls (See Figure 3) 2. Determine where you will get power from. Each plug utilized will draw the current shown in table 1. Carefully select power sources as to not overload and trip breakers or fuses. 3. Connect all other desired 120VAC and 240VAC plugs. The heater will function with only the right receptacle being powered. If all of the receptacles are not being powered the unit will reach a lower maximum temperature and the unit will take longer to heat a space to a desired temperature, if that temperature can be reached. It is recommended that all receptacles are powered, especially for larger spaces or a higher desired temperature 4. Ensure all cable sizes are sufficient to carry the expected current. Failure to size conductors properly will lead to conductor overheating, which will damage conductors and may pose a fire hazard. 5. Put the Main Power switch in the ON position. The fans should now engage, and the digital thermostat should turn on. 6. To adjust the desired room temperature, put the Heat Applied switch in the ON position to engage the resistors. Press the SET button on the thermostat, then use the UP/DOWN arrows to change the value displayed on the digital thermostat to the desired temperature. For recommended temperatures to kill different bug types see Time in Minutes to Mortality Chart. 8

Master Plug 120VAC Cord Powering Controls Figure 3. Powering the Controls SET Button Temperature Controls Temperature Display Figure 4. Thermostat 7. The heater will now generate heat until the temperature at the thermostat reaches the desired temperature. The heater will automatically turn the heater elements on and off as required to control to the desired temperature being sensed at the thermocouple(s). 8. Allow the heater to hold the temperature of the room for the recommended time shown in table Time in Minutes to Mortality Chart. 9. Note that your heater thermostat is programmed with a 2 F hysteresis value. 9

c) Shutdown 1. Put the Heat Applied switch in the OFF position and lower thermostat value to below standard room temperature. 2. Allow fans to operate at least three minutes or until exhaust air is cool before shutting them off. This cooling period will extend the life of your heater. 3. Put the Main Power switch in the OFF position. 4. Remove all 120VAC plugs and 240VAC plugs from the heater. 5. Put cables back into the storage box. (Not supplied by Mosebach) 6. Move the unit to storage. 6) Bug Killing Conditions The conditions below represent the recommended run time once the entire area has become fully heated. Enclosed spaces, such as clothes, beds, couches and drawers may take significantly longer to reach desired temperatures than exposed surfaces in the space being heated. The information below has been obtained from various sources and has not been verified independently. The results when using this information is not guaranteed. 14 11) FAQ Frequently Asked Questions About BK17 Heaters Why are there two 120V and 240V inputs? The 120V and 240V inputs can supply only a limited power based on the size of the circuit. The four inputs split the total amperage draw of 82A into two 14A input (for the master connection and second step), one 24A input, and one 32A input, allowing each connection to draw power from a 120V or 240V power supply on a 15A, 25A, and 35A circuit without tripping a breaker or blowing a fuse. Which of the 120V extension cords must be plugged in for use? The master / control power 120V extension cord must be plugged in or the unit will not operate. This input is the one labeled Master. Do I need all 120V and 240V extension cords plugged in? No, the units will run with fewer than four cords plugged in but at a reduced heat output. We recommend using all four plugs as that will allow the unit to produce the most heat which provides the quickest heating time, the ability to treat a larger space than with fewer than all four plugs, and to ensure that the desired temperature is reached. Can I use the 120 volt extension cords and the 240 volt extension cords at the same time? The BK17 is designed to use both 120 volts and 240 volts at the same time. What size power cord should I use? It depends on how long the extension cord is. For 120 volts the wire must be at least #14 wire for up to 50 feet and # 12 wire for anything above 50ft. For 240 volts, minimum wire size is a #6 for up to 100 feet. 14

What size space can be treated with a BK17 Heater? Treatment times will vary depending on the type of construction and the conditions of the treatment area, the objects in the treatment area, and the voltage supplied to the unit. Our testing was in a 256 square foot chamber with 8 foot ceilings constructed of Styrofoam (R-10 insulation). How long will a treatment take? Treatment must be long enough to ensure that the bugs and eggs are subjected to lethal temperatures and times. This means that after the initial rise to desired temperature, that there will be a period of time where that high temperature is maintained to allow the heat to penetrate any objects being treated. This would likely be several hours, but will depend largely on how quickly the objects being treated absorb heat. Spacing out the objects in the treatment area and circulating the heat will aid in the objects absorbing heat from the air. Why is it taking so long to heat the area? There are many factors that affect heating times. They include size of the area, voltage levels in the building and construction of the space. Please see Heating Time Section in the owner's manual. Heating times can be decreased by adding insulation or covering doors, windows, vents, etc. Where can I use a BK17 Heater? The unit must have adequate power supply (refer to the spec sheet or quote for voltage, amperage, and power consumption). Supplying voltages other than those listed may result in decreased performance. The unit must be powered such that it is grounded and the power supply must be fused and grounded. The unit is rated for indoor use only. Should I keep the heater inside the heated area? The heater will work best if the heater is kept inside the area being heated. What should the differential be? We suggest 2 degrees. 15

I want to use a generator. What kind of generator do you recommend? For our recommended generator, please refer to the BK17 Accessories quote. If you have not received an Accessories quote, contact a Mosebach sales representative. I hear a continuous clicking sound, what s wrong? Clicking means that there is not enough air being moved through the heater. Sometimes the clicking does not start until the area is heated. In both cases the most common cause is low voltage. Increase the size of the wire being used in the extension cords or reduce the cord s length. The BBHD heater is rated for 120V or 240V single phase electric. Supplying less voltage may result in insufficient airflow causing the clicking sound. The fan is running, but there is no heat. First, check the connection of the thermostat unit and set points. Second, make sure the air intake is further than three feet from a wall and it is unobstructed. Lastly, verify the power supply / voltage to the master / control plug is correct. Who can I contact with additional questions? If you have any additional questions or concerns, please contact Mosebach Manufacturing at support@mosebachresistors.com. Please provide the serial number, part number, contact information and a detailed description of the question or concern. 16

12) Treatment Suggestions Adjustments must be made to treatment procedures for the given conditions in a treatment area. Effective treatment may require larger or multiple heaters depending on the size and conditions of a given treatment area. Correct power must be supplied to the unit. Please refer to the quote for rated voltages and amperages. Treatment Recommendations: 1. Use seals to block any gaps in the doors. 2. Use high temperature insulation to cover vents and air conditioners, isolate spaces, and cover cement. 3. Insulate windows. 4. Insulate / cover any vents or through-wall AC units. 5. Furniture might have to be rearranged for better heat circulation (including mattress and box spring). 6. Fans to help circulate the heat are recommended. Fans must be rated to run in high temperature and should have low amperage draw to prevent tripping a breaker and losing treatment time. 7. Correct voltages must be applied for the heaters to run properly. The BK17 heaters are rated for 120V and 240V single phase. 8. The starting temperature of the area will affect the time needed to reach temperature. A very cold area will take longer to reach lethal temperatures than a warm one. 9. Use multiple heaters for larger areas. 10. Any fan or ventilation system that either draws in outside air or vents out the heated air from the treatment area will result in heat loss. 11. Any door or window that is left open, even slightly, will result in heat loss. 12. Every space is different, and treatment procedures must be adjusted to accommodate the particulars of the space being treated. 17
