NEW CART. NEW PROGRAM. NEW SCHEDULE. OWNER S MANUAL: ORGANICS (GREEN) CART peelregion.ca/waste Please keep this booklet for future reference. WASTE COLLECTION CHANGES ARE HERE!
Organics Cart
Congratulations! You are now the recipient of a new organics (green) cart, which is part of Peel s new waste collection program. Your new cart features a unique gravity lock that keeps out pests like raccoons and squirrels. Please give this cart a good home. BEGINNING IN JANUARY 2016, THERE WILL BE SEVERAL THINGS YOU LL NEED TO KEEP IN MIND: You will have a new cart for household organic items such as food waste. Your organics cart will be collected every week. Your bagged garbage and organics cart will be collected one week and your bagged recycling and organics cart will be collected the next week. You will need to use clear or transparent blue bags for recycling (blue boxes will no longer be collected). You will need to use garbage bags for garbage. You can only put out four bags of garbage at a time on your garbage collection day (every two weeks). Your collection day may be changing in You can check your collection day and schedule online at peelregion.ca/waste We ll take back your old blue/grey boxes and green bins in early 2016.? Your collection day may be changing in Go to peelregion.ca/waste for more details on your waste collection schedule.
HOW TO SET OUT YOUR NEW CART ON COLLECTION DAY The new cart works with the new automated collection vehicles. For your cart to be collected it will need to be set out properly. Here s what you need to do to ensure your waste is collected: 7:00 A.M. Face cart toward the street. Arm s length distance on both sides of the cart.
PLACE IT: On your collection day, place your waste at the curb by 7 a.m. Place your organics cart as close to the road as possible without blocking the road or sidewalk. Make sure cart is clear from trees or other overhead obstructions. Ensure cart and bags are accessible to collection trucks and avoid having cars parked too close to the cart. During the winter months, please do not place cart or bags on top of or behind snow banks. Please do not use any items to keep the cart lid closed (e.g. bungee cords). The lid should be locked for collection. FACE IT: Place cart so that the front of the cart is facing straight toward the street, with the handle facing the house. SPACE IT: For safe and efficient collection, ensure there is an arm s length of space on both sides of your cart to allow for automated cart collection. Extra material must also be placed out on the correct day, at an arm s length distance from your cart. Extra material may include: Bulky items (e.g. furniture) Yard waste Large metal appliances and fixtures (by appointment only). ERASE IT: Please remove your cart and any uncollected material from the curb by 8 p.m. on your collection day.
HOW TO SORT YOUR WASTE THE ORGANICS (GREEN) CART Your organics cart holds all of your household organic material such as food waste. Use it regularly and correctly, and you will find that your regular garbage has little odour. Here are a few items that CAN go in your organics cart: Food scraps, including meat, bones and skin (raw and cooked) Dairy products such as cheese and yogurt Eggs and eggshells Vegetables and fruits Coffee grounds, filters, tea bags and loose tea Fats, oils, sauces and condiments Soiled napkins, paper towels and paper containers Tissues and cotton balls Soiled pizza boxes or cardboard Shredded paper Here are a few items that CANNOT go in your organics cart: Pet waste Textiles Diapers Takeout cups and lids Produce stickers Plastic grocery or shopping bags Plastic Glass, aluminum or steel containers Look for one of the above symbols when purchasing compostable liner bags
Animal resistant design To avoid having pests, such as raccoons, getting into your organics cart, we recommend that you lock the lid of your cart by simply turning the lock clockwise. The cart can be collected with the lid locked. To unlock it, simply turn the lock counter-clockwise. Please go to peelregion.ca/waste for more details. THE KITCHEN CONTAINER: Is a handy way to collect household material, such as food waste, that goes into your organics cart. For your convenience and to reduce mess and odours, you can line your kitchen container with certified compostable bags, paper bags or newspaper. Putting baking soda or shredded paper in the bottom of your kitchen container will also reduce odours and moisture. Simply empty your kitchen container material into your organics cart.? For a full list of what goes in your organics cart, go to peelregion.ca/waste. You can also use the How to Sort Your Waste tool to find out if an item goes in the organics cart or not.
BAGGED RECYCLING Everything you currently put in your blue/grey box goes into clear or transparent blue recycling bags starting the week of January 4, To help get you started, you will receive a year s free supply of recycling bags. You may be surprised by some of the things that can and cannot be recycled, so this is a good opportunity to brush up on your recycling knowledge. Our website peelregion.ca/waste has a handy tool to help you determine what goes in your recycling bags. Here are a few items that CAN go in your recycling bags: Most paper, plastic, glass and metal containers and packaging Plastic and glass bottles Milk and juice cartons Juice boxes Plastic cups (straws are garbage) Paper, magazines, newspapers, construction paper and cardboard cartons (but no small scraps) Empty plastic grocery or shopping bags. Please put them all together in a tied plastic bag before placing in the recycling bag. Here are a few items that CANNOT go in your recycling bags: Household hazardous waste Coffee and tea pods Home health care waste, including sharps (needles, syringes or lancets) Steel, plastic or ceramic dishes, cookware (pots and pans) and utensils
Household electronics, including VHS and cassette tapes Automotive parts and motor oil containers Propane tanks and fire extinguishers Kitchen/food waste Construction, demolition and renovation materials SOME ADDITIONAL TIPS: Blue boxes will no longer be collected. Cardboard boxes must be flattened and placed in your recycling bags. Excess cardboard must be bundled and placed an arm s length distance from your organics cart.? Not sure if something can be recycled? Go to peelregion.ca/waste and click on the How to Sort Your Waste tool.
BAGGED GARBAGE If you are recycling and participating in organics collection, you might be surprised by how little garbage you have and how little odour there is. Your garbage must be placed in a garbage bag to be collected. If you have more than four bags every two weeks, you will need to purchase garbage tags. To purchase garbage tags, visit peelregion.ca/waste BULKY ITEM COLLECTION Furniture and large items * are picked up year-round on your scheduled garbage collection day. Just place your items at the curb by 7 a.m. Make sure these items are an arm s length distance from your organics cart. Visit peelregion.ca/waste for details. * Does not include metal appliances (eg. stoves, refrigerators)? Not sure if something is garbage? Go to peelregion.ca/waste and click on the How to Sort Your Waste tool.

As you are getting familiar with your new organics cart and bi-weekly collection, the people collecting the cart will have new vehicles and new routes. During this time we ask for your patience as we all work together to adjust to the new program.
