3 Dry Ice: The Green Clean A safe alternative for you and the environment Dry ice cleaning is effective and safe Dry ice has been approved by the EPA, FDA and USDA as an acceptable material in cleaning methods. For food processors, dry ice cleaning has been documented by the Food Standards Agency to effectively decontaminate surfaces of Salmonella, E. coli and Listeria. Dry ice cleaning does not release harmful gases into the atmosphere. Dry ice does not produce CO 2 or add CO 2 to the atmosphere and therefore does not contribute to the greenhouse effect. Dry ice cleaning does not generate secondary waste. Dry ice cleaning is safe and nontoxic (once pellets impact the surface, they dissipate). Dry ice cleaning reduces or eliminates employee exposure to (and corporate liability from) the use of dangerous chemical cleaning agents. Environmentally Responsible In addition to being clean and safe, it is also important to remember that dry ice is obtained as a byproduct of other industrial processes - i.e. it is made from reclaimed CO 2. It does not produce CO 2 or add CO 2 to the atmosphere and therefore does not contribute to the greenhouse effect. Dry ice cleaning is truly and completely environmentally responsible. Other cleaning methods can be toxic When using solid grit media or water for cleaning hazardous materials, the cleaning media also becomes hazardous, requiring special handling, disposal and regulatory reporting. Dry ice creates none of these waste stream additions. Sand, soda or water blasting can create downstream contamination that affects surrounding installations. Soda blasting can kill surrounding vegetation. Chemical and solvent cleaning methods are toxic, which creates toxic waste and requires disposal. Workers are exposed to potentially harmful substances through the use of chemicals and solvents. We ve been able to cut back on our use of chemical solvents. PG&E Kerckhoff Power House, built in The Situation A Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) hydroelectric generator in California that was originally built in 1920 had been out of service for several years. In order to place the unit back in service, the fragile insulation on the stator needed to be delicately cleaned without causing additional damage to the windings. Coldsweep, Inc. a company that provides industrial cleaning services to the industry was contacted for the job. Coldsweep, Inc. had performed several other industrial cleaning projects for PG&E in Central and Northern California before this project was proposed and has been providing services to some of the most respected names in power generation (GE, PacifiCorp, Tri- State Generation, Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Reclamation, Montana PPL, Nevada Power and many others) since The Problem The unit was in very poor shape and the main concern was to provide a gentle cleaning action that would not damage the delicate windings. Generator cleaning projects such as this one require some very delicate cleaning for some areas, but more aggressive cleaning in others. A cleaning solution with the flexibility to do both was needed. In the past, corn cob blasting and brushing or wiping with solvents have been used to attempt generator cleaning. Corn cob blasting has proved to be too messy and hand cleaning with solvents too time and laborintensive.

Many people within the company originally felt that this generator might be beyond salvage, but once again, Cold Jet seems to make the impossible a little easier to achieve. Dry ice cleaning provides a clean-inplace solution and is non-abrasive, non-conductive and non-corrosive. It is a completely dry and clean process as it does not use water. The cleaning media, dry ice, sublimates or converts from a solid to a gas upon impact, disappearing without adding secondary waste. Dry ice cleaning is environmentally responsible and can safely be used on and around hydroelectric generators. Dry ice cleaning is also able to get into the nooks and crannies that other methods such as corn cob cannot. We shaved both block ice and 3 mm rice pellets with ease and experienced no issues, said Heath. The SDI Select 60 performed wonderfully to clean the delicate windings at pressures that varied between 30 and 50 PSI. The unit was also used to clean the cast iron portions of the generator housing at higher pressures up to 125 PSI. I did not have access to high-pressure air at this worksite, but the possibility of performing three different types of dry ice cleaning (dry ice dusting, traditional and high-pressure) with one machine is very compelling for us. It was especially convenient to be able to place the SDI Select 60 outside of our containment because it simplified loading the dry ice into the machine. The ability to run 40 feet or more of hose into the work area made this job go twice as fast because there was not enough room for two machines inside the stator bore. The SDI Select 60 could be placed outside the containment with 40 feet of hose running into the work area. This simplified and sped up the process. The stator diameter was 10-foot with a 6-foot bore. This project used about 8,000 pounds of dry ice and took about 6 days to complete. This included time to erect containment, perform the dry ice cleaning, wipe down the generator and dismantle the containment.

7 Several nozzle configurations were used for this project and varied in width/blast swath from.8 inches up to 2 inches. Narrower nozzles were used to clean the fragile portions of the windings and wider nozzles were used to speed up the cleaning in areas that could tolerate more aggressive cleaning. Where there was easy access, longer nozzles were utilized. For the end turns on the top and bottom of this vertical unit, 8-inch long nozzles were used because of the tight working quarters. It was important that the cleaning action could be precisely controlled with various nozzle types and sizes. Coldsweep, Inc. carefully cleaned the unit, taking care not to over-clean areas that could not tolerate it. The customer was very pleased with the results and brought other hydro users on site to see how they were successfully cleaning the unit. The generator is now fully back in service. BEFORE The Situation Manufacturers and service providers are feeling the effect of today s energy expense and price increases. In the vast majority of industries, energy management has no traditional place on the organizational chart, in job descriptions or in performance outcomes. Most decision makers believe the solution to the problem is to find the lowest available energy prices. Electric motors account for up to 80% of all available electric energy used by an industrial site. They also waste up to 50% of electric energy due to inefficient motor optimization. Some reasons for these inefficiencies include: high ambient temperatures, unbalanced voltage, improper loading, inadequate ventilation, misalignment, vibrations, improper lubrication, defective drive components and most importantly, contamination. INDUSTRIAL MOTOR FAN (IMAGE BELOW) Contamination is a surface coating that causes electric motors to run hotter than normal. By design, electric motors have cooling fans that draw air over the external shell. If not properly cleaned, contamination will build up over time and clog and defect the motor s ability to cool itself and run at ambient temperature. Hot, contaminated motors running in these conditions increase the amount of energy and thus, increase the cost the motor needs to operate. When dirt, soot, grease and oil build up in production facilities over time, machinery can begin to overheat and function improperly, leading to potential failure and creating an unsafe working environment, said Greg Battle, President and CEO of Motor Techniques, Inc. A clean electric motor runs cooler and also uses less energy than a dirty one. In order to fully decontaminate an electric motor and increase motor optimization, it must be thoroughly cleaned. AFTER

9 The Problem The most common way to clean electric motors is to take them out of service and clean manually with rags and industrial solvents. To avoid this interruption in production, cleaning is often delayed extensively, which leads to an inefficient motor and/or eventual motor failure. Most of the industrial solvents used have a very low flash point, creating a fire hazard and possible outages. They also emit unhealthy fumes and the manual application of the solvents leaves secondary debris such as lint and cloth on the motor surfaces. Additional methods of motor cleaning include soda blasting, walnut shell blasting and pressure washing or steam cleaning. Soda and shell blasting can be too abrasive for the motors and require a system shutdown. Pressure washing or steam cleaning the electrical system of a hot, running motor can create a highly dangerous situation. These methods are also time intensive and leave behind debris. Results Conservation Solutions has analyzed multiple projects before and after the use of dry ice cleaning in order to gauge the effectiveness and overall time and cost savings. The cost savings for using dry ice can be figured in Mega-watts and man hours. In order to obtain their results, they used a CSI 510 noncontact infrared scanner gauge that measures the detection of contaminated hot motors. The scanner measures degrees within 99% accuracy. They measure the load (energy required for a particular job) before and after cleaning. A Mega-watt has a standard flat cost to the facility and using less Mega-watts to clean results in a direct savings to the company. The savings are instant and can be calculated as soon as the cleaning is complete and verified by the gauges. Alternative methods are much slower and require excessive man hours for secondary clean up. Successful Solution for Automotive Manufacturer An automotive manufacturer in Michigan had a bank of five 300 horsepower motors, each totaling $100k to run each year. After disassembly, two inches of contamination was discovered on each motor that had built up over time and from lack of regular cleaning and maintenance.
