1 Care & Maintenance Kastell Kitchens You have your new kitchen, now it s time to keep it looking good! Some suggestions have come from research; others have come from the manufacturers themselves Timber and Timber Veneers These surfaces will usually have a protective coating, such as lacquer or polyurethane, applied before they leave the factory. Warm water with a small amount of detergent and a soft cloth will be sufficient to keep this finish clean. For timber surfaces that are unprotected we recommend that you wax once a year with a good quality furniture wax. Do not use silicone based products on the timber finishes as these prevent re-lacquering if it ever becomes necessary and do not protect the timber as well as furniture wax or furniture oils. Be kind to your timber surface. It will not withstand strong knocks and bumps and will also scratch easily if not protected. As with other surfaces take care with abrasives, heat and acidic substances. Granite, Marble and other Natural Stones (does not apply to manufactured stone) Note: YOUR STONE HAS BEEN SEALED PRIOR TO INSTALLATION It is then also recommended you reseal a few times a year. Good quality sealers are available from most tile shops and also online from the following companies: What you will have to do from here on: Immediately wipe up spills and messes. Use ph balanced cleaners and soap less detergents for daily cleaning. Mild dishwashing liquid sometimes works quite well on stone surfaces. Acidic cleaners will etch and remove the polished surfaces (which will dull the stone) from alkaline stones like marble, travertine, and sandstone. These acids can come from alcohol, fruit, seafood plus... Acids, Natural Stone Products such as wine, fruit and fruit juice, milk (lactic acid), coffee and teas, Household cleaners, dishwasher powder, laundry powders ALL contain either natural acids or harsh chemicals that will eat away at natural stone AND the sealers that are used to protect them. Whenever spills occur wipe them up. If any product that contains acid or harsh chemicals is left on a sealed natural stone it will eventually eat away at the sealer and affect the stone. Wipe up spill immediately, try to identify what caused the stain, use a mild detergent or soap first to try and remove the stain. 1

2 DON'T use vinegar, lemon juice or other acid based cleaners on natural stone. Be aware of Natural and Organic products always read the labels. DON'T use cleaners that contain acid. Read product labels carefully of any bathroom or grout cleaners DON'T use abrasive cleaners or scourers or household grade steel DON'T ever mix chemicals together. Some combinations such as bleach and ammonia will create a toxic and lethal gas For a more extensive list of stain removal advice please go to the Marble Institute of America website: Most stones, once protected, require occasional scrubbing to remove surface build-up of dirt and grime. Using a neutral cleaner, mop or scrub on cleaner as directed, rinse if necessary. Towel drying after rinsing removes streaks. On honed (smooth but not polished) or slate (rough) finish stones, a good scrubbing is required more often, due to the texture of the product holding the dirt to the surface. A good penetrating sealer cuts down on the frequency of this task. 3 Engineered Stones Silestone, Quantum Quartz, Smartstone, Caesarstone Ultra Compact Stones Dekton and Neolith As with other tops, wipe spills immediately. Use warm soapy water for everyday cleaning. (Note: Please read individual companies Care & Maintenance guide on websites to refer to specific do s & don ts for these products.) Most Stone suppliers are now bring out their own cleansers which are available by calling their offices You Have Chipped Benchtops? These can happen from time to time and are due to impact from sharp objects or heavy items being dropped in the bench etc. Most stones can be repaired at a small cost by the individual companies. The rates are reasonable. Please contact your company directly or give us a call and we will place a service call for your and a technician will come out to do the repair. Laminates Recommended are all water-based cleaners which do not contain abrasives or strongly acidic or alkaline ingredients. For light stains, wipe up as soon as they occur using a soft, damp cloth. Never use harsh abrasives or steel wool. Acrylic doors You will be supplied with a Cleaning product called VuPlex for this. The doors need to be cleaned once all trades have left site and this provides protection. Polyurethane As for laminates, do not use harsh abrasive cleaners or any strong chemicals. It is recommended that window cleaner be used for a streak free finish. Use a MICROFIBRE CLOTH! 3

4 Chipping does occur from time to time if the painted surface is hit with force or with sharp objects. This IS NOT covered by our guarantee. Please call our office for repairs. Cabinet Interiors Wipe these over periodically to ensure that they are kept in prime condition. Use a cream cleanser to remove marks caused by pots and pans rubbing against the surface. Handles Brass and chrome handles/knobs are to be wiped over with a soft cloth dampened with mild detergent and water. DO NOT use steel wool or harsh abrasive cleaners on these surfaces. Drawer Runners and Hinges Just wipe over with a damp cloth if necessary. Use Lanolin liquid on OUTDOOR Kitchen hinges (see below for application details) Adjusting your hinges***this is not normally an item that we would come to maintain. It is simple for you to do. Activating the SOFT Close on your doors if it s accidentally left inactivated and your doors are slamming! This little Black button does the trick 4

5 Adjusting BLUM drawers and touch opening Systems As there are different types that we use in our kitchens from BLUM including these below, best if you send us an with an image of the affected drawer / door clearly showing the sides if a drawer, we will send you a link to their website for instructions Removing your BLUM drawers Send us an and we will send a short Video or link to a video showing how to do this. Bins These are products that will have excessive wear and tear and normally do not last the life of your kitchen. Be careful not to apply too much pressure when pushing garbage into bins. This has been known to cause damage. They are inexpensive to replace and are available from Kastell or any accessory retailer. Appliances Refrigerators, BBQ s, Dishwashers etc Read all documentation and follow specific maintenance requests. (all manual will come with each of your appliances) 5

6 OUTDOOR KITCHENS MUST BE PROTECTED FROM EXCESS RAIN,EXCESS HEAT, FROST, DUST, SEA SALT,CHLORINE & POOL CHEMICALS. Custom made commercial refrigerators Call our office if something goes wrong with your refrigerator. Alternatively please contact TSJ Stainless Teppanyaki Plates Please ensure that you follow their care instructions and that you make sure that you have your unit COMMISSIONED- This involves having one of their technicians come out and check that it is all running perfectly, gas pressure test etc. It is a FREE service that is included in your purchase price. Don t wait too long have it done immediately after installation by the plumber. GOLDSTEIN ESWOOD The mild steel plate MUST be protected from rust by thoroughly cleaning immediately after use. Nylon scourer is OK- NO steel wool. Immediately after cleaning oil the plate with vegetable oil. Then the plate needs to be protected from moisture until its next use. Once a mild steel plates rusts it could pit which makes it hard to get the plate back to a satisfactory finish for good cooking. Stainless steel plates are a little easier to look after and a better choice as there is less maintenance requirements. SALT SPRAY will affect the plates stainless steel is recommended for any applications within 2 km of the coast Lanolin Your Kastell Outdoor Kitchen has already been treated in our factory with the Heavy Duty version of this product, Lanotec, we now recommend you follow through every 6 months to maintain with the can supplied to you by Kastell. Application - Shake can well, spray onto hinges, screws, Aluminum frames & joints. Let the product (tack off) dry, then use a lambs wool cloth to gently buff/polish to seal off. This application will prevent all metals from corrosion. Lanotec is available from many retailers such as Auto shops.
