2 TECVALCO S CWT HEATER FINDING A HOME IN U.S. VERTICAL HEATER TREATERS For the last five years, oil companies in North Dakota have been using Tecvalco s CWT Heater. This innovative technology provides safe heat to the process of treating crude oil in a vertical treater. The heat is transferred in-directly via steam coils to treat the oil to pipeline specifications rather than using traditional fire tube technology. Replacing the fire tube with a CWT results in an increase in thermal efficiency, longer run life of the unit, reduced operating and maintenance costs, and increased safety. There are over 50 heaters in operation in the U.S. on 13 different pad locations. Thus far, three major U.S. oil producing companies have adopted the technology. Tevalco projects that by the end of the summer the number of heaters in operation will increase to a 95, and they will be running on 21 different pads. BENEFITS OF USING THE CWT HEATER: There is an increase in thermal efficiency, as the CWT heater boasts thermal efficiencies between 75 and 80 per cent. As the steam coils are be located in the oil emulsion area at relatively lower temperature, there will be no scale accumulation on the steam coils. Therefore, there would be better heat transfer, longer run life, and reduced operating and maintenance costs. The increased thermal efficiency means that there is less fuel consumption, and also less greenhouse gas emissions. The vacuum also reduces corrosion as there is very little oxygen in the system, and allows the heater to operate at less than 14.7 psig and 121 C. The CWT Heater runs on a closed-loop system that requires no top-ups of glycol or water. CSA approval on the 385 Model and 770 Model. The CWT Heater is located in General Purpose Area. 3 THE NEWEST ASSET IN LEAK DETECTION Tecvalco is excited to announce the newest addition to the leak detection arsenal, the GAS TRAC LZ-30 from Sensit Technologies. This new compact methane-specific leak detector provides fast and accurate readings at distance up to 100 ft. The LZ-30 utilizes TDLAS (tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy) technology to provide instantaneous and accurate responses to the presence of methane gas as low as 5 ppm-m. Designed to be competitively priced, the LZ-30 is perfect for hard to reach areas, eliminating the need to directly access the gas plume, climb the elevated areas, or access fenced-in property, or other potentially hazardous situations. 4 IS IT TIME FOR YOUR CWT HEATER'S CHECK UP AND OPTIMIZATION? Tecvalco s industry-trusted CWT Heaters run their best, and last their longest, when they are given regular maintenance and optimization. A CWT heater must undergo a complete inspection, cleaning, and maintenance annually. There are numerous steps to a proper inspection and maintenance, all of which can be found in your Operator s Manual. These are just some of the steps in a proper preventative maintenance and optimization process, and it is vital that this work be done by a qualified serviceman or a Tecvalco service technician. Tecvalco s own CWT technicians are always ready to come out and perform your preventative maintenance or help however needed. The vent should be visually inspected at least annually for the presence of deposits of soot or debris. If the stack is dirty, there should be air blown through the stack until there is no debris remaining. This is because a poor-adjusted or malfunctioning appliance can deposit soot and other debris which can enter the vent system. The flame arrestor should also be inspected and cleaned at least annually. This is to ensure that it is in good working order, and that enough air is provided to support proper combustion. Two other vital components of the heater that require annual inspection and cleaning are the swordfish burners and the fin tubes. This should be done before and after regular heating season (spring or fall). A regular schedule of inspection and maintenance should ensure your heater runs it best for many years to come. INSPECTION CHECKLIST Take pictures of the complete heater. Record heater serial number and coil serial number. Shut heater off and allow it to completely down. Ensure vacuum is between -22 and -29 inches. Check the glycol level in the sight glass. Open the burner box door and take pictures of burner tray and burner box. Remove stack and take pictures of stack walls and top of fin tubes. Remove burner tray gas line and disconnect pilot line from tray. Loosen off main pilot line nut. Burner tray may be difficult to remove as side walls can distort, slightly pinching the tray in place. When burner tray is removed take pictures of bottom of fin tubes. If possible, do a visual inspection. Use an air compressor to blow off top and bottom of fin tubes. Once complete, do a visual inspection. If not clean, then repeat. Use a vacuum cleaner to clean up the bottom of burner box and, if possible, the top of the fin tubes. Take pictures of cleaned-out burner box and top of fin tubes. Clean burners from tray with air and check orifices to see if they are clean. This may require disassembly. Clean flame arrestor cell with air or soapy water solution. Flame arrestor must be clean and free of debris. Reassemble burner tray and install back in burner box. Hook up gas line and pilot assembly. Check wires in burner box for defects. If necessary, replace. Note: Condition of door gaskets and flame cell. Replace if damaged. Close up burner box area. If heater has cooled down enough, take glycol samples. When complete, relight heater using start-up procedure. Once inspection is complete, test controls using a dry block where required, or a multimeter and pressure station set-up for pressure switches: Operating steam pressure switch (5 psi). High-high steam pressure switch with ESD (10 psi). Will require relight. Line temperature control switch. Set to desired temperature. Low water cut-off. Will require relight. Low-low water cut-off with ESD. Will require relight. Emergency push button. Will require relight. Once the heater is up and running, complete the final checks as follows: Check millivolt readings. Check temperature of gas at station outlet, as well as in and out of the coil. Check fuel pressure, in inches WC. Check steam and stack temperature. Perform combustion analysis, if possible.
