8 Ⅰ. Safety guide FOFS Cougar has been designed and manufactured for convenient use in indoor or outdoor working conditions. It is easy and simple to use, but please read through this manual completely to avoid failures and safety accidents before you use it. FOFS Cougar is designed to easily use, but also contains potential danger. Therefore, this manual contains all necessary instructions to assure safe splice. Please keep this manual with the product all the time. Fiber Optics For Sale Co. is not responsible for equipment damage and personal or physical damage caused by improper use or modification. 7

9 Warning If an abnormal condition such as the following occurs, immediately turn off power and disconnect the power source. Next, contact the maintenance service personnel in Fiber Instrument Sales. If unusual smoke, noise or odor or unusual overheating occurs, If foreign substance or liquid gets inside the splicer, or If the splicer is dropped from a high place or suffers damage Do not use AC power code other than the allowable power cord indicated. Doing so may cause a fire, electric shock or injury. Use the power code provided with COUGAR. Do not touch the electrodes when COUGAR is switched on. High voltage and High temperature from them may cause serious shock or a burn. Make sure that there is no dust or foreign substance inside the AC plug. Then, Connect AC power cord to the specified charger and the outlet. Unsafe splice may cause smoke, fire, equipment damage, serious injury or death. 8

10 Warning Do not use a voltage other than the allowable power voltage indicated. AC power supply for the specified charger is AC V, 50-60Hz. Please check the AC power supply before using. AC power supply within the improper range may cause electric shock, equipment damage, serious injury or even a death. Abnormally high AC output voltage or frequency from the generator is a common problem. Measure AC output voltage with a circuit tester before connecting AC power cord. Regular inspection is needed because improper high voltage or frequency from the generator may cause serious injury, electric shock, equipment damage or death. Do not severely pull, heat or modify the provided AC power cord. The use of damaged power cord may cause hazardous conditions such as fire or injury. Connect only to 3-core AC power cord. Do not connect to 2-core power cord, cable or plug. To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not touch the AC plug, the AC power code and the splicer with wet hands. 9

11 Do not disassemble AC adapter, battery or the splicer. Any modification to the splicer may cause a fire, electric shock or injury. When you use external battery, see the following instructions. The use of improper external battery may cause smoke, equipment damage, or in serious cases burning, injury or death. Do not throw the battery into a fire or a garbage dump. Do not charge the battery close to flames. Do not give severe vibration or shock to the battery. If the battery is not fully charged within 6 hours or green LED lamp is not on, immediately stop charging and contact Fiber Instrument Sales Do not place any object on AC adapter during charging. Only use the specified battery charger(s-1b) and the specified battery pack(s- 1B). The use of any battery pack other than the specified one may cause smoke or fire, equipment damage, injury or death. 10

12 Warning Only use the specified battery charger(s-11). Do not use AC power other than the allowable power indicated. Do not let battery(s-1b) or the terminal of the specified charger be shortcircuited. Excessive current flow may cause damage to the equipment and persons. Avoid the use of COUGAR in a hazardous location in which harmful gas or flammable gas can generate. In such conditions, the electrical arc of the fusion splicer can result in bursting or fire. Do not use compressed gas to clean COUGAR. If you carry the transport case connected with a belt, first check the belt is strong enough. The worn belt may fail to sustain the case, resulting in equipment loss or injury. 11

13 Wear safety glasses for protection from glass fibers. Glass fibers may cause serious damage to eyes or skin tissue. Do not use the splicer in high temperature conditions. Doing so may cause equipment loss or injury. Do not use a splicer in high temperature conditions. Doing so may cause equipment loss or injury. 12

14 Caution During or after heating protection sleeves in the tube heater, do not touch both parts. Injury from high temperature could occur. Do not place COUGAR in unstable locations. If the equipment is dropped, injury or equipment damage could occur. COUGAR is a precision instrument. It should be handled with care and precision. When transporting it, use its specified transport case to protect it from dust, dust, moisture, shock and impact. Replace the electrodes the right way. Only use the specified electrodes. Place the new electrode in the right position. Replace the electrodes in pairs. Not doing so may cause abnormal arc and equipment damage or deterioration in splice performance. 13

15 Only use ethyl alcohol (more than 96 %) to clean the splicer including object lenses, V-grooves, wind-proof glass, LCD monitor, and the main body. To prevent modification, discoloration and low performance, do not use any kind of chemicals. Do not use lubricants including oil and grease for COUGAR. Doing so may cause performance deterioration and equipment damage. Do not store the equipment in high-temperature or high-humidity conditions. Equipment damage could occur. Qualified experts should check up technical matters concerning COUGAR. Not doing so may cause fire or electric shock. Please contact qualified service personnel in Fiber Instrument Sales and get A/S service. 14

23 Ⅳ. Using method 1. Power supply The highly efficient built-in battery of COUGAR enables to use COUGAR without attaching additional battery. Charging the battery If the specified charger is connected to Charger Jack on the left to the main unit and the AC cord to AC outlet, the charging LED lights up red, green and yellow in sequence and charging starts when the LED lights up red after about 0.5 second. The LED light turns green when charging is completed.. (After this the charging should be continued for about 30 minutes.) COUGAR adopted the floating charge system. 22

24 Power indicator LED The LED light turns red green yellow off red when minimum AC power is on. When yellow LED blinks, disconnect the AC cord and connect it again after ten minutes. Protective devices are built in the battery of COUGAR(S-1B) and so prevent over arc, over charge and overload. When these protection functions are performed, its power is automatically shut off. In this case, after ten seconds, connect the DC plug of the charger to charger jack on the left to COUGAR and then connect AC cord to the power outlet. And so, the shut-off will be canceled and charging begins. 23

25 AC operation Connect the DC plug of the AC specified charger to charger jack on the left to COUGAR. When normal AC voltage is supplied, the green light of the AC adapter turns on. Please use only the normal power and make sure more than 250V is not supplied. Connect the AC power cord of the charger to the AC outlet supplied with normal power. Do not use a battery charger other than the specified charger provided with the product. Doing so may cause hazardous conditions such as fire. DC operation with an external battery Connect 12V car cigar-jack to DC IN jack on the left to COUGAR main unit. Only use the specified cord. 24

26 At this time, charging does not work. Only use the specified voltage. (DC 12V car cigar-jack) Do not Large-capacity battery(s-sb) use Have an optional large capacity battery(s-sb) installed on the lower part of COUGAR and connect the connection cord to DC IN 12V jack on the left part of COUGAR. Built-in battery use Please make sure that there is more than 20% battery capacity for even a few connections. Battery capacity check Battery remaining capacity can be displayed on the right upper part of the screen when the product is in use. 25

27 Charging the battery Connect DC cord of specified charger S-11 to CHARGER jack on the left part of large-capacity battery. Connect AC cord to the outlet with the appropriate AC voltage. The charging LED light blinks red green yellow in sequence and the LED lights up red again, which means charging has begun. It takes approximately 3 hours for the built-in battery and 6 hours for the large-capacity battery to be completely charged. Keep charging for buffing for about 30 minutes after the green light is turned on. 28 Ⅴ. Instructions for use 1. Function keys This is Power ON and OFF key. If you press the key, power is on, the monitor is turned on and next square indicator lights up red. If you press it for about one second again, the lamp turns off and power turns off. This is a key to move the cursor leftward. If you press this key on the home screen, the screen becomes dark. This key also controls the movement of optical fibers and camera focus in the passive mode. (For more details, refer to the passive mode menu.) This is a key to move the cursor rightward. If you press this key on the home screen, the screen becomes bright. This key also controls the movement of optical fibers and camera focus in the passive mode. (For more details, refer to the passive mode menu.) If you press the key when is displayed on the right part of the menu screen, the submenu is activated. 27

29 This is a key to move the cursor upward. This key is used to select a motor in the passive mode. This is a key to move the cursor downward. This key is used to select a motor in the passive mode. This is a key to go to the menu screen This key is used to cancel your selection or to return to the previous screen. This Enter key is used to complete Edit setting or go to the next step on the menu. This key is to shut off power when the splicer is stopped by abnormal voltage or external shock. 28

33 3. Installing the protection sleeve lauder Get out the protection sleeve lauder on the right to the wind protector and insert it into the left or right groove. 4. Cleaning optical fibers Clean the optical fiber with soft cloth or cotton moistened with alcohol. Dust in a protective sleeve may cause cut-off or attenuation. 5. Inserting optical fibers into protective sleeves Push an optical fiber into a protective sleeve. Sleeve Optical fiber 32

34 6. Cleaning and stripping optical fibers Strip about 4 cm of coating from the fiber end with a coating stripper. Clean the bare 순도가 99% 이상되는고품질의알코올을사용 7. Cleaving bare optical fibers 33

35 Place the bare fiber in the cleaver to give the desired cleave length. 2 Gently lower the cleaving lever. Now the fiber is cleaved. 3 Raise the cleaving lever and take out the fiber. 4 Remove the cut end of the fiber and throw away in a proper container. For more details concerning the use of cleaver, refer to the cleaver instruction guide. 34

36 8. Placing the fiber in the splicer. Open the wind protector and Place the fiber between the V- groove and the electrode. V-Groove Electrode If the coating part of the fiber is bent, please have the bending part face the floor. Hold the fiber in place with your hands and then close the holder. Have the other end of the fiber placed as in. Close the wind protector. 35

37 9. Splicing procedures You can observe the optical fiber by using the image processing system installed in FIS Cougar. But your naked eyes are also necessary to inspect the monitor for more complete result of splicing. Optical fibers placed in the splicer move towards each other. Approaching fibers stop in the position exactly suitable for splicing after performing a cleaning arc. Then, the check-up process is conducted for the cleave angle, the state of the fiber end and dirt. If the measured angle is bigger than the limit value or if pieces of glass fiber are found, an error message is displayed on the screen. 36

38 The splicing process is automatically stopped. If an error message does not appear, please check the section state with your naked eyes based on the following. If the inspection result is one of the followings, remove the fibers from the splicer and replace fibers. This kind of general fault may cause poor splicing. Inspected optical fibers are aligned in core-to-core or clad-to-clad form. Measured values of Offset for clad and core axles can be displayed on the screen. The splicer can be set to stop after checking the cleave angle. Doing so can make optical fibers not be aligned. You can change the limit value for the cleave angle. If you want to ignore the error message and go to the next step, press the SET key. The cleave angle, clad axle Offset and core axle Offset can be set not to be displayed on the screen. 37

39 After the alignment of fibers, arc is performed for splicing. Press the Arc key after the completed alignment in the case of step by-step The estimated splice loss value is displayed on the monitor after completed splicing. The loss value is affected by various error factors. The estimation of splice loss is 38

40 If the measured angle or the calculated splice loss value is bigger than the preset limit value, an error message is displayed on the screen. If an unusual condition is observed from spliced optical fibers including too thick or thin fibers or bubbles on them, an error message is also displayed. If an error message does not appear but the condition is considered unusual with naked eyes, the repeat of the splicing process is highly recommended. The splicing point may look larger or more expanded than other parts. This is not an abnormal condition and does not affect splice loss. To change the estimated splice loss or the limit value of the cleave angle, refer to the manual. In some cases, splice loss can be improved by additional re-arc. Press ARC key to perform an additional re-arc. The process to estimate splice loss and confirm splicing condition is conducted once again. In some cases, splice loss can be even worsened by additional rearc. You can set additional re-arc to OFF or limit the number of rearc. 39

43 Increase in splice loss: cause and improving measures Sometimes a vertical line appears in the splice point during splicing multi-mode optical fibers or dissimilar fibers(with different diameter). It does not affect splice properties such as splice loss or proof. The storage of splicing results The splicing result can be stored in the memory and the procedure is as follows. After 2000 th result is stored, 2001 th result overwrites 1 th result. 42

44 How to automatically store splicing results (notes are exceptional.) Press SET key or RESET key or open the wind protector when the splice is completed, and splice results are automatically stored in the memory. 10. Removing spliced optical fibers Open the lid of the tube heater. Open the wind protector. Grasp and hold the left fiber with the left hand at the edge of wind Continuously hold the fiber at this reference point until it has been properly loaded into the tube heater. 43

45 Open the right fiber clamp holder. Grasp the right fiber, and remove the spliced fiber from the splicer. 11. Installing the protection sleeve in the sleeve heater Have the right end of the protection sleeve placed at the Arrow of the sleeve heater. Slide the spliced fiber slowly to the right until the left hand Ensure that the protection sleeve is centered over the splice portion. 44

46 12. Heating the protection sleeve Transfer the fiber with protection sleeve to the center of the tube heater. Place the fiber with protection sleeve in the tube heater. Be sure to keep tension downwards on the fiber as it is placed, so that the tube heater lid can automatically close. (The upper heater is only applied.) Ensure that the protection sleeve is centered over the splice point. Ensure that the supporting bar in the sleeve is located Press the HEAT key to start the heating cycle. When the heating process is completed, the HEAT LED(red) turns off. 45

47 If the HEAT key is pressed during sleeve heating, the sleeve heating process is aborted. Open the tube heater lids and remove the protected fiber from the tube heater. Apply only a small amount of tension to the fiber while removing it from the tube heater. In isolated cases, the sleeve may stick to the bottom plate of the heater. If this happens, use a cotton swab to help remove the sleeve from the heater. Visually inspect the finalized sleeve to verify no bubble or debris/dust is present in the sleeve. 46

48 Ⅵ. The maintenance of quality splice 1. Cleaning and inspection before splicing For the cleaning and maintenance of important areas, refer to the following. Cleaning of V-grooves Contaminants in V-grooves do not assure proper holding, resulting in high splice loss. V-grooves must be frequently inspected and regularly cleaned up even during its daily operation. To clean V-grooves, see the following. Open the wind protector. Brush the surface of the V-grooves V-Groove with a cotton swab moistened with alcohol. Remove the remaining alcohol in the V-grooves with a dry clean cotton swab. 47

49 Please be careful not to touch the electrodes. Do not apply too much force when cleaning. It may cause damage to the V-grooves. If contaminants in V-grooves are not fully removed with a cotton swab moistened with alcohol, use the ends of cleaved optical fibers to remove them. Then, repeat the step 2. Cleaning of the fiber clamp holder chip Contaminants in holder clamp chip do not assure proper holding, resulting in lowquality splicing. Holder clamp chip must be frequently inspected and regularly cleaned up even during its daily operation. To clean V-grooves, see the following. 48

50 Open the wind protector. Clean the surface of holder clamp chip with a thin cotton swab moistened with alcohol. Cleaning of the glass of wind protector Contamination on the glass of wind protector reduces the transparency of light guide. If so, optical fiber core position becomes unclear, resulting in high splice loss. To clean the glass, take the following steps. Clean the surface of the mirror with a lens cleaner. Remove the remaining alcohol on the glass with a dry clean cotton swab. 49

51 Cleaning of the optical fiber cleaver Contamination of a blade or a clamping pad of the fiber cleaver lowers the performance of the cleaver and contamination of the fiber surface or ends may 2. Regular inspection and cleaning Regular inspection and cleaning are required to maintain high-quality splice. Cleaning of the object lenses Contamination on the surface of the lens makes it difficult to recognize the fiber core position, resulting in high splice loss. If this happens, the splicer fails to work properly. To prevent this, clean two object lenses at regular intervals. If you don t, dust will accumulate and it will be impossible to remove it. Cleaning process of the lenses is as follows. 50

52 Turn off the splicer before cleaning the object lenses. Clean the surface of the lens(x axis & Y axis) softly with a lens cleaner. Remove remaining alcohol on the glass with dry clean cotton. Remove the electrodes before cleaning the object lenses. Be careful not to reach the end of the electrode while cleaning the lenses. The lens surface should be clean and there should be no line and stain. Turn on the power and check whether there is no line and stain. Press the X/Y key to change the 51

53 Replacement of the glass of wind protector If the fiber image is not clear enough, or the stain remains even after the clean-up, Turn off the splicer. Open the wind protector. Remove the glass with a cross-head screwdriver. Take out the shaft pin inserted in the glass and reinsert it in the new glass. Please be cautious not to lose the spring. Confirm that the glass is properly replaced. If not so, optical fiber can not be exactly Spring insertion part Shaft pin observed. 52

54 Clean the glass. Turn on the power and confirm that there is no line and stain. Press the X/Y key to change the screen and inspect the surface of the lens. Blade position adjustment If the cleaver fails to work properly, rotate the blade 1/16 th of a turn to replace the worn out blade position with a sharp blade position. To rotate the blade, see the following. Loosen the wrench bolt a little on the right of the cleaver with the hex wrench on the lower part of the cleaver. Rotate the circular blade to change the position with a cotton swab. (Adjust it to have the blade number face up.) Tighten the wench bolt on the right of the cleaver. Be careful not to touch the blade when rotating it. Use a thin cotton 53

55 Replace the hex wrench in its original position. To replace the blade, see the operation manual of the cleaver. If the 16 positions of the blade are all worn out, replace the blade. 54

56 Ⅶ. Main Menu 1. Select Splice mode The optical splice setting for the exact optical fiber assembly comprises the splicing factors described below. These factors are dependent on optical fiber assembly and the difference in optical fibers. They are stored in the database and can be used by coping in the user program. They can also be edited for exact fiber assembly. 55

57 Database Splice Mode Details In this mode, the core profile of the fiber is observed and optical fibers are automatically spliced. 65 Splice edit mode The splice mode edit enables users to set various splice modes and use them in a proper way in their working conditions. Instructions for using various parameters and their functions are described below. It sets the method of fiber alignment. Core : optical fibers are aligned to core position on both sides. Clad : fibers are aligned to the Gap set Position of clad. It sets the focus during the fiber observation. A focal plane moves towards the core due to numerical value increase and the focal plane moves against the core due to numerical value decrease. AUTO focus setting is recommended. The left fiber and the right fiber are focused respectively and it is possible even when different fibers are spliced. When aligning optical fibers by using the ECF function, it sets the axial offset. The most fiber is aligned to the core center and the less errors are, the most the effect of ARC POWER is. 64

It sets the error range of cleave angle. If at least one out of the measured left and right cleave angles exceeds the error range, an error message appears. It sets the error range of estimated loss. If the estimated loss exceeds the error range, an error message appears. If the bending of the two spliced fibers exceeds the preset limit, an error message appears. When the section gap between fibers is set, a short arc is conducted to remove fine dust on the fiber surface. The execution time of cleaning arc is set in this domain. It sets the section gap between left and right during alignment and initial arc. It sets the position of the fiber to splice at the center of arc. If the MFD values of left and right fibers are different, splice the fiber with the smaller value. Splice loss can be improved by transferring the gap setting position from the arc center to the bigger MFD fiber. It sets a span of time from the start of arc to fiber proceeding as the initial ARC POWER. In this point, if initial ARC POWER value is low, the section angle of the fiber can be bad, resulting in an axial offset. If the value is too high, the fiber can be burning or become round, causing the deterioration of splice loss. It sets a span of time from the start of arc to fiber proceeding as the initial arc time. Long [initial arc time] means high [initial ARC POWER]. Overlap ARC1 POWER It sets the overlapping of fiber in the amount fiber advancing. If [initial ARC POWER] is weak or [initial arc time] is short, make the [overlap] setting somewhat small. In opposite cases, make the setting somewhat big. A major arc can be adjusted in two steps. The first step of arc is ARC POWER 1 and the second step is ARC POWER 2. ARC POWER 1 is set in this domain. 65

67 Arc1 time It sets the time of ARC POWER 1. ARC2 POWER Arc 2 time Arc ON - Time Arc OFF - Time Re-arc time Taper splice Taper Wait Taper Speed ARC POWER 2 is the second step. ARC POWER 2 is set in this domain. It sets the time of ARC POWER 2. In general, [ARC2 Time] is set to OFF. It is possible to set a very long arc time, but if the arc time 1 or 2 is more than 30 seconds, the arc unit can be damaged. It sets the ARC POWER to ON and OFF one after the other as ARC POWER 2 is being arced. ON time of ARC POWER 2 is set in this domain. Have arc time set to ON always for a re-arc. It sets the arc time OFF of ARC POWER 2. When the arc of ARC POWER 2 is stopped in isolated cases, re-arc may also be stopped. If continuous re-arc is needed, set this parameter to OFF. It sets re-arc time. It automatically sets re-arc POWER in the [splice mode edit] menu to arc the same amount as [ARC POWER 2]. If ARC POWER 2 is set to ON and OFF, re- arc is automatically set to ON and OFF. Thin fibers increase splice loss in isolated cases. This taper function is set to ON. Taper shape is determined by these three parameters. It designates a span of time from the end of the fiber advancing amount to the start of taper. It designates the taper speed of the fiber. Taper time It designates the taper time of the fiber. Estimation mode MFD - Left MFD - Right OFF, Core or Clad Selects Clad when splicing MMF. Selects one of these splice loss estimation modes. It sets the MFD value of the left or right. Estimated splice loss values for both the left MFD and the right MFD have to be calculated. 66

68 Offset Core Step Core curve MFD Mismatch The sum of the first measured splice loss value and increased loss. If special optical fibers or other optical fibers are spliced, high splice loss can occur even under the optimal conditions. The minimum value of the actual loss should be set in order to match the estimated splice loss with the actual loss, Core Step, core curve and MFD fault affect splice loss. If the estimation mode is set to OFF or Clad, Core step, core curve and MFD fault are automatically set to OFF. In the case of the estimated splice of the optical fiber splicing considered to be sure, it has to be adjusted. It has to be adjusted by using core alignment advancing, core curve and MFD fault. 67

The sleeve may be removed after the heating is finished. [Caution] In the case of higher finish temperature, a buzzer sounds before the sleeve is not cooled. When the sleeve is removed from the tube heater at over 100, the remaining optical fiber at the splice point may be pressured and modified. 74

76 Set the temperature below 180 when heating standard sleeves. At high temperature(over 150 ), do not set heating time to more than 120 seconds. 3. ARC CALIBLATION ARC POWER can be adjusted according to the change in air temperature, humidity and pressure. The sensor for temperature, humidity and pressure makes it possible to calibrate Arc Power properly in accordance with surrounding conditions. The change in ARC POWER caused by the electrode wear and fiber splicing is not automatically adjusted. The central axle may move left or right during the arc. In this case, ARC CALIBLATION is necessary since the splice position of the fiber can be changed. [Arc Calibration] is a function to change a arc voltage factor value and the factor value is used in operation program for all 75

77 Operating procedures Select [ARC CALIBLATION] in [splice menu], and the screen for ARC CALIBLATION appears. Place prepared optical fiber in the splicer. In general SM or DS fiber is used for arc calibration. Optical fiber is used for arc calibration. Dust on the fiber surface can affect arc calibration. Press the ENTER key. It is executed as follows. Arc is performed after the fiber alignment, and the capacity is adjusted according to arc condition. The initial cleave angle is not related to the parameter, cleave loss. It can be independently set for arc capacity adjustment. 76

78 After the measurement is completed, the result such as the following is displayed on the screen. Completed Calibration Select [Arc Calibration] in This message means that arc voltage calibration and splice position are Arc Calibration successfully completed. Press the Esc key to finish this function. Test Again This message means that arc voltage calibration and splice position are completed Arc Calibration Finish but there has been too much change in the set value between before and after calibration. So, the re-execution of arc power is needed. Close the wind protector and press. Prepare the fiber again and re-execute Arc Power. Even if the calibration is not completed, you can press the Esc key to finish. 77

If no such message is displayed even after a series of re-arc, it can be considered almost completed. 4. 93 Ⅸ. Aux menu 1. Replace Electrodes As the splicer is used, the electrode is worn out and silica oxidized substances are accumulated. Therefore, regular cleaning is needed. It is recommended to replace the electrodes after approximately 2,000 arcs. A message indicating the electrode replacement appears after more than 2,000 arcs. If this happens, turn off the splicer and replace the electrodes. Not doing so may result in high splice loss and deterioration of the splice point. 92

94 Replacement procedures Turn off the splicer. Open the electrode cover. Loosen the electrode retainer screw and remove the electrode. Wipe the new electrode with cotton pad soaked with alcohol and then install it. 93

95 (i) Install the electrode in the V-groove of the base. (ii) Tighten the screw. (iii) Close the electrode cover. Be careful not to give damage to the electrode while replacing it. Tighten the screw while pressing the electrode retainer in the exact position. Turn on the splicer and press the [ENTER] key after preparing optical fiber. Perform an arc repeatedly about 4 times to make the electrodes stable after the arc calibration. If the arc is completed, repeat the arc calibration until the message saying Text Finish appears. 94

96 2. STABILZE ELECTRONODES Sometimes, arc power becomes unstable due to surrounding conditions, increasing splice loss. It takes a long time to stabilize arc power when the splicer is at too low or high positions. With this in mind, continue to calibrate arc power until the Procedures Select [Stabilize Electrodes] menu. Place the fiber into the splicer for splicing. Press the ENTER key to execute the electrode stabilization process. 95

102 Ⅺ. Error messages 1. FIBER DIRTY This error message appears when foreign substance on the prepared fiber exceeds the allowable level. Clean the fiber completely and reset it. 2. REPLACE POSITION This error message appears when the fiber is not placed at the central position between the electrode and the V-Groove or when an object lens or mirror gets contaminated. Press the Reset key and reset the fiber at the center between the electrode and the V- Groove. 101

103 3. Too Long Fiber This error message appears when the fiber is set near the electrode, an object lens or mirror gets contaminated, or LED lighting is dark. Press the Reset key and reset the fiber. Remove the contaminants on the lens and moving mirror If an error is confirmed by LED check up, refer to Fiber Instrument Sales. 4. FIBER OVER ANGLE This error message appears when the measured cleave angle of the fiber exceeds the limit value of the angle. Check the condition of the cleaver and reset the fiber. Check the limit value of the cleave angle. 102

104 5. LOSS LIMIT OVER This error message appears when the estimated loss limit exceeds its limit value. Check the limit value of the loss rate. 6. FIBER THIN ERROR This error message appears when the splice point of the fiber is thinner than the allowable level. Shorten the drawing length of taper splice. 7. FIBER THICK ERROR This error message appears when the splice point of the fiber is thicker than the allowable level. Reduce the overlapping set value. Check whether arc power is small or whether arc time is short. 103

105 8. CORE BUBBLE This error message appears when a bubble or a spot occurs at the splice point after splicing. Check the fiber cleaver. Clean the V-Groove. Check the electrodes. Ⅻ. Solutions to splicing problems If the loss limit is higher than expected after splicing or abnormal splice operation is found, take proper measures according to the following. 1. High loss Limit 1 Dust or foreign substance may cause poor splicing. Clean the fiber surface completely. Do not clean the fiber after cleaving 104 not to make the fiber section exposed

106 2 Foreign substance in the V-Groove prevents proper alignment. Keep the V-Groove and the fiber holder clean always. 3 Poor condition of the electrode Replace the electrode if it is worn or dirty, or its end is bent. 4 Improper ARC POWER or arc time Check arc power and arc time and reset it to a proper value. The set value in the initial menu is the most proper set value. 5 Improper splice mode Check whether the selected splice mode is suitable for the fiber. 105

107 2. Abnormal splice operation 1 Alignment process is repeated. Open the wind protector and close it again. 108 Ⅼ. Other Menus 1. Diagnostic Test A simple diagnostic test can be conducted for all functions of FIS Cougar. This test provides information on whether the splicer is properly working. Procedures Place optical cable in the splicer and select [Diagnostic test] in the menu. Inspect the following. Inspection item Description 1 LED Check Inspects LED brightness. 2 Motor Check Inspects each motor operation. 3 Dust Check Inspects whether dust or foreign substance exists on the fiber. 107

109 If all inspections are completed, the results are displayed on the screen. If the dust inspection gives bad results, clean object lenses. If foreign substance is not completely removed by cleaning, it is likely that there is a problem with optical transmission path. In this case, contact Fiber Instrument Sales. Dust inspection and LED inspection can be found in [Other Menus]. 2. Dust check The optical fiber is observed through the image processing. Dust or pollutants on a camera, a lens or the glass of wind protector can prevent fiber observation, resulting in poor splice result. This function inspects the optical path for pollutants and determines whether the pollutants can have an adverse effect on splicing. 108

110 Procedures Select [Dust Check] in [Other Menu]. If the fiber is placed in the splicer, remove it and press the ENTER key. The splicer starts the inspection. If ERROR is displayed, clean the object lenses and the glass of wind protector and perform [Dust Check] once again. For cleaning procedures, see Splice quality maintenance. Press the Esc key to finish the dust inspection. If dust remains on the glass or object lens even after cleaning, contact Fiber Instrument Sales. 109

112 4. Maintenance Information Select [Maintenance Information], and the following is displayed. Parameter Description Produce Displays the manufacturing date of the splicer(year, month, day) Displays the arc number after an electrode is replaced. Electric number If [Clear Arc Count] in [Aux Menu] is executed, the number is initialized to 0. Total Electric number Displays the total arc number of the fusion splicer. Last maintenance Displays the date of the last maintenance work. Next maintenance Displays the date of next maintenance work. 111

113 C. Q & A 1. Power supply The splicer fails to turn off when the power button is pressed. Press the button about 1 second. Fully charged battery pack does not allow a number of splicing processes. If [Power Save] is not in use, power consumption is big. See [Power Save] and properly use the power at all times. If the battery pack is deposited for a long time, charge it again. If its use period is over, install new one. Since a battery pack is operated by using chemical reactions, power is low at low temperature conditions and rapidly decreases particularly at sub-zero temperature. In addition, battery s power consumption gets fast because the splice consumption current increases at high altitude. If the battery pack is not fully charged, refer to the following. Red LED of the AC charger blinks during recharging the battery. 112

114 Disconnect the AC power cord and reconnect it about 10~15 seconds later. This can happen when charging at too-high air temperature(over 40 ) or exposed directly to the sun. This also happens when there is a defect in the battery pack or its use period is over. If the LED still blinks after installing a new battery pack, contact Fiber Instrument Sales. LED fails to turn on during charging. Disconnect the AC power cord and connect the DC cord to the charging jack. Connect the AC power cord again about 10~15 seconds later. The charging LED lights up red green yellow OFF red and the charging process begins. The battery indicator does not show charge status. Charge the battery. When charging, first connect the DC jack and confirm AC power. 113

115 The battery indicator fails to properly show charge status. The battery indicator is only a reference. If the battery indicator fails to work properly, this can happen. 2. Splice operation An error message appears on the screen. Refer to [Error message list] Unstable splice loss/high splice loss To clean the V-groove, the fiber clamp holder, the glass of wind protector and object lenses, see [Splice Quality Maintenance]. Refer to [Replace Electrodes] and replace the electrodes. Refer to high estimated loss section of [Error Message List]. If the fiber is bent or twisted, place the fiber with the bent or twisted part facing up. Splice loss is affected by cleave 114

116 angle, arc condition and clean or dirt condition of the fiber. If the splice loss remains high or unstable after taking the measures described above, please contact Fiber Instrument Sales The splicer requires regular, annual maintenance to keep splice quality. Check the splice procedures. See [Splice Procedures]. The monitor turns off all of a sudden. Press the Enter key and check Power-saving menu. The splicer turns off all of a sudden. Turn on the splicer again and check Power-Save menu. 115

117 How to change the error limit value for cleave angle, splice loss and fiber angle. See [Splice Mode Edit]. An error message can be ignored. See [Additional splice functions]. Arc power and arc time can not be changed. ARC POWER and arc time can not be changed in SM, NZ, MM or Auto Mode. If [ARC CALIBLATION] is performed, proper ARC POWER is maintained in those modes. If performed in other modes, it is automatically set to prevent ARC POWER and arc time from changing. 116

How to display cleave angle, fiber angle and core/clad deviations See [Splice Option]. 11 The difference between the estimated splice loss and the measured splice loss The estimated splice loss as calculated loss is only a reference. Optical parts of the splicer should be clean. Adjust [MFD-left] and [MFD-right] when splicing special fiber. Adjust [Minimum loss] and [MFD difference] when splicing different kinds of fibers. To set parameters, refer to parametersetting section of other splice modes stored in the database domain. 117

119 12 If a special mode is used, re-arc is ON/OFF arc. Set [ARC POWER 2 ON Time] to 500 and [ARC POWER 2 OFF Time] to OFF. Refer to [Splice Edit Mode]. 3. Tube heater operation Fiber protection sleeves fail to shrink completely. Increase heating time. See [Heater Edit Mode]. The heater is overheated. Press the Heater key to stop the operation and turn off the splicer. Then contact Fiber Instrument Sales. 118

120 A fiber protection sleeve remains on the heating plate after shrinking. Please use a cotton swab or a similar tool to push or remove the sleeve. 122 5. Other settings Repeatedly perform [Arc Calibration] function until Test Finish is displayed. The splicer requires extensive calibration when the electrodes are replaced or surrounding conditions go through a considerable change. Test Finish message does not appear even after [Arc Calibration] is repeatedly performed. Execute [Stabilize Electrodes] function on [Maintenance menu]. If Test. Finish message is not displayed yet, replace the electrodes by using [Replace Electrodes] function. Arc power does not change after [Arc Calibration]. Internal factors are adjusted by ARC POWER. The ARC POWER displayed. in each splice mode does not change. Adjusting results affect every splice mode. Please keep this in mind as a reference. 121
