7 SINCE 1869 Way back in 1869, brothers Allen and Joseph Speakman opened up a modest plumbing shop in downtown Wilmington, Delaware. 45 TEPID WATER Water can be dangerous. It sounds a little silly when you say it out loud, but water, when not delivered at an appropriate temperature, can cause serious damage. When you re exposed to chemicals, your first instinct is to dash towards the nearest eyewash. You activate the equipment, dip your face in, and feel the water flush into your eyes. But what if that water is freezing cold? Or burning hot? How likely are you to continue flushing if the water you re using is uncomfortable? Not likely at all. The water flowing from your equipment needs to be tepid in temperature so that you re comfortable when flushing for ANSI s required 15 minutes. Look for signage indicating hazardous material use and make sure eyewashes and showers are within the prescribed distance. HAZARDOUS MATERIAL STORAGE The storage, transfer and use of flammable liquids require showers and/or eyewashes as secondary protection. Look for containers used to handle or store these materials and make sure ANSI/ISEA Z358.1 compliant emergency equipment is within 10 seconds travel distance. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT Look for areas where workers are using personal protective equipment such as goggles and liquid proof gloves. These are found in areas where hazardous materials are being used and eyewashes and/or showers will be required as secondary protection. BATTERY CHARGING & MAINTENANCE OSHA Directive Number STD This directive provides guidelines regarding eyewash and body flushing facilities required for immediate emergency use in electric storage battery charging and maintenance areas. Make sure emergency equipment is properly located near these hazards. HANDS-FREE OPERATION ANSI/ISEA Z358.1 requires that shower valves be of simple operation, turn from off to on in one second or less, and provide hands-free operation once activated.
