4 Energy Efficiency Standards Well-defined protocols (or laboratory test procedures) for accurate estimate of energy performance Target limits on energy performance based on specified test protocols

5 Types of Energy Efficiency Standards Prescriptive standards Require that a particular feature or device be fitted or installed in all new products Minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) Prescribe minimum efficiency levels or maximum energy consumption that appliances/equipment must achieve Class average standards Specify the average efficiency of a manufactured product allowing each manufacturer to select the level of efficiency for each model so that overall average is met

7 Energy Labels Comparative energy labels Informs the consumer that the product meets the required standard or eligibility criteria Allow consumers to compare and form a jugdement on energy performance among similar products using Discrete categories of performance Continuous scale Endorsement labels These are seals of approval given according to a specified criteria Energy labels can stand alone or complement energy standards

10 Scope Air-conditioners, not exceeding 5 kw, and of the non-ducted type, and heat pumps; Audio and video equipment, including video recording equipment, set top boxes (STB s), audio equipment and multifunction equipment for consumer use. Television sets that include, but are not limited to, those with CRT, LCD, PDP or projection technologies; Dishwashers (water consumption is also covered); Electric lamps; Electric ovens; Refrigerators and freezers; Tumble dryers; Washer dryer combinations; and Washing machines (water consumption is also covered)
