5 HVAC SYSTEM MAINTENANCE Ensure your system is efficient With as much as 60% of your annual energy bill going towards heating and cooling your home, it makes sense to treat your heating and cooling systems well. In order to keep these costs under control, ensure your heating and air conditioning system is running at peak efficiency by performing regular maintenance. Use these handy tips to maximize your energy savings and the life of your furnace and air conditioner Seasonal service At the end of summer each year, have a licensed contractor service your system. Easy as 1-- Replace filters every one to three months. Mode matters Set fan to AUTO mode, as ON or CONTINUOUS mode use more energy. Reduce heat gain In the summer, draw drapes during warm days to reduce heat load in your home. Let it breathe Ensure airflow is not blocked by furniture, carpet, drapes or other items. be comfortable, not cold Save % in air conditioning costs for every C increase in temperature. Unclog coils Clean debris, dust and pollen from condenser coils. Keep ducts air tight Leaky ducts can reduce cooling efficiency up to 0%. 7 What is a kilowatt-hour? A KILOWATT-HOUR EXPLAINED A kilowatt-hour (kwh) is a unit of energy that represents one kilowatt of power expended for one hour of time. One kwh of energy is equal to 1,000 watt hours and is the equivalent of powering an watt LED bulb for 1 hours. How much does it cost? To determine the approximate cost to run an appliance, follow these three steps. 1 To calculate kwh, take the wattage of the appliance, multiply by the number of hours you use it, and divide by 1,000. This will give you the kwh. Example: A 1,00 watt appliance x hours per day / 1,000 = 6 kwh. Multiply the kwh by the time-of use price (mid-peak, on-peak or off-peak) to get the cost for using that appliance for one day. Example: 6 kwh x. cents (mid-peak) = $0.6 per day. Now, multiply by 0 to give you an approximate cost for using that appliance for one month. Example: $0.6 x 0 days = approximately $16.0 per month *^. Clothes Dryer Average,000 Watts at Cycles/week = $1/ year (OFF-PEAK) $1/year (On-PEAK) SPACE HEATER Average 1,00 Watts on hours/day = $1/Month (Off-PEAK) $/Month (On-PEAK) Electric Stove Average,000 Watts on 1 hour/day = $/Month (Off-PEAK) $/Month (On-PEAK) Dishwasher Average 1,00 Watts on hours/day = $/Month (Off-PEAK) $1/Month (On-PEAK) * Weekends are always billed at the off-peak rate and are not taken into account in determining approximate cost. ^Examples are calculated using electricity prices for time-of-use only, does not include Delivery or Regulator Charges. Cost calculations use time-of-use pricing as of September 1, 01. What is a kilowatt-hour?

13 Energy Saving Hints and Tips Top Energy Saving Ideas Did you know that saving energy not only saves money but can also increase your home s comfort and extend the lifetime of your appliances? Here are ten easy ways to save energy in your home Dirty Dishes Be Gone! Make sure your dishwasher is full and run it after p.m. when off-peak prices begin. Watch the savings add up. Keeping Cool During the summer, aim for comfort, not chill and set your air conditioner a few degrees higher. The recommended temperatures are C when at home and C when away. Save Your Clothes and your Wallet Run cold-water washes during off-peak hours to save energy, while also preserving the colours in your clothing. 1 Staying Warm In the winter, turn the heat down a couple of degrees when you re not home to reduce the cost of operating your furnace fan. The recommended temperature is 1 C. Drying to Save Clothes dryers use a lot of energy. Wait until the evening or weekend and you ll pay less. In the summer, consider using an outdoor clothesline. Breathe a Little Replacing your furnace filter every one to three months improves both air quality and energy efficiency. Provide Some Shade Without blocking airflow, plant trees or shrubs around your air conditioning unit. A shaded unit uses up to % less electricity than it would in the sun. Cleaning Your Fridge Carefully cleaning the condenser coils will ensure your refrigerator performs efficiently. Make sure to disconnect the power to your fridge first! Get that Pool Ready! If you have a pool, run your pump and heater during off-peak hours. You may only need to run your pump for six to eight hours a day. Unplug and Save Turn off or unplug any appliance or light that s not needed. Why pay for electricity that you re not using?
