1 DEERFIELD SCHOOL DISTRICT REFERENDUM Committed to Excellence and Equity in Educating Our Students FACILITY NEEDS THE CHALLENGE Deerfield Middle School/High School building has served the community for over 40 years and needs repairs to serve students into the future. The high school building was built on Simonson Boulevard in This original structure housed grades 9-12 and consisted of our current front office area, custodial area, original commons, large gymnasium, middle school locker room and middle school science room. In 1978 a major addition added on the small gymnasium, technology ed. room, high school classrooms, music classrooms, library area and middle school classrooms. Due to increased enrollment, the expanded commons area and three middle school classrooms were added in Additional high school classrooms were added in 2003 when the new elementary school was built. While these additions brought much needed space, many of the original electrical and plumbing fixtures are still in place. Maintenance and repair on this equipment is costly and difficult due to obsolete parts. In addition, i years of wear and tear by thousands of students, staff and community members make it necessary to replace worn, damaged and aging items. THE NEED State mandated revenue caps have severely limited the district s facility maintenance budget. We need additional revenue to address the many facility needs in the middle/high school building and district grounds. THE PLAN With increased funds from the referendum we would address some our current facility needs through a five year facility maintenance plan. The following pages illustrate some of the building and grounds needs in the district that could be addressed in this plan. While the referendum would not be able to address all these needs, it will give the district an opportunity to begin taking care of the most critical needs.
