9 Page 9 OVERVIEW The Portable Canine Container was developed to provide a portable shelter unit for the working military dog and equipment. The container is designed for shipping on a 463L pallet, and is C130 compatible. The unit is sized to fit a standard 4 x 8 truck bed. The container will accommodate one dog. The Portable Canine Container is easy to clean and sanitize, and well ventilated to ensure the health of the animal. The unit is also equipped with an 110VAC 60 Hz Air Cooling Unit to provide cooling and heating. The purpose of this manual is to provide general operational and maintenance procedures for proper function of the Portable Canine Container. This manual is divided into three sections: Operation of the PCC, Maintenance of the PCC and the setup of the Kennel Run. The Portable Canine Container is made of aluminum extrusions and is structurally welded by certified welders at Due to the structural design of the container, it is recommended that the PCC unit be returned to for any structural repair or modifications. The cooling system/ heating unit is a warranted item and servicing should be completed by an authorized technician to maintain the warranty. This manual contains also information related to the basic setup of the Garrett Container Systems, Inc Kennel Run, part number: CON The Kennel Enclosure CON consists of the single Canine Kennel (961150) and 8 X 10 Kennel Run (961155). The Kennel run facilities are an exercise area for the military working dog that has polyprophelene pet decks and a roof system with a shade canopy. The kennel run disassembles and can be stored and transported on a 463L pallet. The single kennel has a 39 x 95 air conditioned and heated area for the MWD. The area has a continuous liner for cleaning and sanitizing. Plastic pet decks ship with the unit to be placed in the kennel. The temperature controls are external with an internal air temperature indicator. Use only a 12 gauge wire cord to power the unit. The power cord will easily connect to the external inlet plug. Use only a 25 foot max. length power cord.

17 OPERATIONS DURING COOLER NIGHTS It is important when the temperature drops in the evening or during the night to below 75 F, that the thermostat (TEMP) be set midpoint between Warmer and Cooler. Otherwise, the evaporator coil may become iced and stop cooling. Should icing occur, let the evaporator coil defrost before resuming normal cooling (see DEFROSTING ). Then during the day, when temperatures have risen above 75, reset the thermostat to the desired setting. DEFROSTING Operate the unit at High Fan with the system at maximum air flow position. Allow air conditioner unit to remain off for two to three minutes to allow pressure to equalize before restarting. HEATING Turn selector switch to Low Heat. At this position, the fan operates at low speed with maximum heat output. Rotate temperature dial to appropriate comfort level.

18 Page 18 MAXIMIZING HEATING/COOLING POTENTIAL In order to maximize the heating and cooling potential of the air conditioning unit, it is best to minimize the space or area being heated/cooled. This can be accomplished by using the supplied slide in lexan covers to cover the grilled openings. See Figure 6. Covers are provided for the right and left side of the container. The panels confine the cooling and heating to the interior of the kennel. When the unit is used without the panels, efficiency is decreased greatly, therefore for maximum cooling and heating use the panels. If the unit is placed within a tent, heating efficiency will be improved. If the unit is placed in a closed tent, cooling efficiency will not be improved as the air conditioner will recirculate the same air for the system. This unit should not be used as a tent heater or to cool a tent. DANGER: DO NOT COVER AIR COOLING UNIT. Covering air cooling unit can lead to fire or damage to unit. Figure 6: Slide In Lexan Covers

Inspection of the plastic shroud covering the air conditioner should also be made to ensure that the four mounting screws and washer are snug and hold the shroud to the air conditioning unit. Inspect for cracks or possible damage suffered from impact. ELECTRICAL MAINTENANCE All electrical work and/or inspection on the PCC Cooling System should be performed ONLY by qualified service personnel. HEATING MALFUNCTION If electrical power to the PCC is normal and the fan runs, but there is no heated air, the heating unit may not be receiving power. Check the electrical plug at the heating unit to make sure it is secure. If this does not correct the problem, the heating thermostat or limit switch may be faulty.
