>> feature Majoria Drugs celebrates 50 years in business by Marielle Songy In 1968, Anthony Tony Majoria left his job as a pharmacist and general manager of Fasullo Drugs, a small local pharmacy chain, to open the first Majoria Drugs in Metairie on Veterans Boulevard. Now the location of The Cat Hospital of Metairie, that first store was a little over 1000 square feet but with the support of his customers, Tony had the start he needed to open what would eventually become five pharmacy locations serving customers across the New Orleans metro area on both sides of the Mississippi River. The last store Tony opened was the original Westbank location on Barataria Boulevard in Marrero. Living nearby, he wanted a store that he could walk to. Today the founding ownership of Majoria Drugs- now headed by Rhett Majoria, Steve Sandoz, and Mike LaCombe- operate Westbank locations in Marrero and Terrytown. Majoria Drugs main focus is family and they treat every customer like a member of their own family. Customer service is key and they know that their customers come back to Majoria Drugs again and again because of the personalized experience they get there. Majoria Drugs has a Happy or Not customer experience terminal in each store to get valuable customer feedback on their service experience. They were interviewed in 2017, by Swedish company Happy or Not, because they were their highest ranking pharmacy customer in North America and Europe for customer service scores. All store owners get these customer response reports daily, and they take action when needed. Last year, Majoria Drugs received over 50,000 customer responses and had a 97% customer approval rating while the average independent pharmacy rating is 94.5%. After Hurricane Katrina, providing necessary service to their customers was the only thing on the minds of Rhett Majoria and Steve Sandoz. They got back into town the morning after Katrina and they were able to reopen the Marrero location, on generator power, only a week after Hurricane Katrina. Both the employees and customers welcomed back this shred of normalcy during an otherwise hectic time. Due to heavy damage, the Terrytown store was forced to operate their pharmacy out of a trailer, for 1.5 years, while the main store was being completely renovated. Majoria Drugs is proud to be an active part of the community. They are happy to support local charities and causes, and they are proud to boast more than 60 employees and a low turnover rate. Many of the current employees have family that have worked at Majoria Drugs for generations. They are an integral part of the Westbank community, driving support of local business and keeping our community healthy. Local businesses provide our children a great place 4 >> OCTOBER 2018 >> wbbeacon.com

>> home & garden Knowing fertilizers and soil testing is important by Dan Gill, LSU AgCenter Horticulturist A common misconception is that the type of fertilizer you choose to use is based strictly on the type of plant you are growing. In other words, each type of plant has its own specially formulated fertilizer, and that s what should be used. However, this is not the case. Surprised? Well, to see why this is wrong it s important to look at what fertilizers are and why we use them. Plants need certain mineral elements they absorb from the soil to be healthy. These essential elements include nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, boron, chlorine, molybdenum, zinc, copper and manganese. All the plants you grow use the same essential elements. If any of these are in short supply, the health or performance of the plant will be affected to some degree the more serious the deficiency, the more obvious the symptoms. These essential elements are not food. They are not what plants eat, and they are not at all equivalent to the food we feed ourselves or our pets. Plants make their own food from air and water through photosynthesis. It is impossible for you to literally feed the plants in your landscape. A better analogy would be to compare plant fertilizers to mineral supplements that humans take, such as calcium, iron or potassium. I don t think anyone would consider that pill you take in the morning your food supply for the day. But you need the minerals to be healthy. Samples of soil 6 inches deep from several locations in a garden or lawn can be tested to provide information on soil ph and fertility. Test results come with recommendations based on the type of plants you intend to grow. LSU AgCenter file photo by Tom Koske A fertilizer is simply something we add to a plant s environment that provides one or more essential element. The role of fertilizers is to supplement the mineral nutrients that are already present and available to a plant. If a plant is already getting enough of an essential element from its environment, adding more of that nutrient will not benefit the plant in the least. A fertilizer will only help a plant if it provides a nutrient that is in such short supply that the health or performance of a plant is affected. Because all the plants you grow use the same essential elements, the idea that each type of plant, such as roses, tomatoes, lawn grasses, flowers and fruit trees, require a separate and different fertilizer is simply not accurate. The idea that you need different fertilizers for your plants the way you need different foods for your pets is simply wrong. That being said, the type of plant can influence what fertilizer we purchase and how we use it. A fertilizer for acid-loving plants, for instance, would be appropriate for plants that like acid soil, like azaleas, gardenias and blueberries. Also, some plants require higher nutrient levels to do their best and are fertilized at higher rates or more frequently than those that require lower nutrient levels. While the fertilizer we choose can be influenced by what plants we are growing, it is governed primarily by nutrient levels in the soil. Choosing a fertilizer for your landscape does not depend so much on what you are growing it is determined primarily by which nutrients are in short supply in the soil and need to be supplemented and which don t. Fertilizers come in a variety of analyses. Choose the one that s right for the plants and time of year. Photo by Dan Gill/ LSU AgCenter Soil Testing You cannot simply look at the soil and know what the nutrient levels are. The key to proper fertilizing whether you use commercial or organic fertilizers is a soil test. You can get your soil tested through the LSU AgCenter Soil Testing and Plant Analysis Laboratory in Baton Rouge. A soil sample should be submitted for testing from each unique area of your landscape, especially if the soils may be different due to past treatment or location. For instance, one sample could be submitted from your front lawn area and another from a flower bed in the front yard because the soils would have been treated differently over the 6 >> OCTOBER 2018 >> wbbeacon.com

years. A vegetable garden will require a separate test from other areas. Small boxes and forms to submit samples are available at your parish LSU AgCenter office and at many local nurseries. Go to the Soil Testing Laboratory website to find where soil test boxes are available in your area. Once you are ready to submit your samples, you can mail them directly to the lab in Baton Rouge. The test results you receive will tell you the texture of your soil. You will also learn the ph of your soil, which reveals how acid or alkaline it is. A ph of 7 is neutral. Lower numbers indicate an acid soil condition while higher numbers mean the soil is alkaline. Generally, a ph from 5.5 to 7.5 is acceptable for most plants. If necessary, the ph of the soil can be adjusted higher by the addition of lime or lowered by the addition of sulfur. 20% 20% OFF off for all services when you spend $40.00 and up with this coupon The fertility of the soil is indicated in the test results by the levels of phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, copper, sulfur and zinc. The levels are shown in parts per million and are interpreted for you as very low, low, medium, high or very high. Ideally, the levels should be medium to very high. Fertilizer recommendations you receive with the test results are based on these levels. The amount of fertilizer needed and the number of applications in a season are influenced by the type of plants you indicated you are growing or intend to grow where the soil sample was taken. Monday - Friday: 7:30am - 5:30pm Saturday: 8:00am - 2:30pm Soil testing can be done anytime of the year, but fall is an excellent time. When you get your tests back and see the nutrient levels of your soil, you will be better informed when the spring fertilizer season arrives next year. Getting your soil tested helps you choose fertilizers that emphasize the nutrients in short supply and deemphasize the nutrients already at appropriate levels. wbbeacon.com << OCTOBER 2018 << 7

>> feature Jasmine Rice Thai Cuisine opens in Gretna by Marielle Songy The Westbank is lucky when it comes to restaurants, especially restaurants that feature delicious foods of other nations. We have a generous selection of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese cuisine all over our little metropolis. The newest addition to the Westbank food scene is a Thai restaurant, Jasmine Rice Thai Cuisine, located at 2112 Belle Chasse Hwy in Gretna. Here you will find a delicious selection of tasty Thai food that is sure to satisfy any craving. It was so good that I had to stop myself from eating it all in one sitting and I will definitely be ordering this again. I didn t partake in dessert, but they have mango sticky rice, which is a favorite, so I ll be sure to leave room for that next time. Jasmine Thai Cuisine is open Monday through Saturday 11:00 am to 9:00 pm. They can be reached at I stopped in here recently for lunch and, although the restaurant is small, it s beautifully decorated and very welcoming. I was greeted by the owner and I was excited to look over the menu and see what they had to offer. For such a small place, the menu is big and you re going to find a lot of Thai favorites here. Some stand outs were the Tom Yum soup which is spicy shrimp, lemongrass, hot and sour soup with fresh mushrooms, tomatoes, and cilantro. They also offer combination soup and wonton soup. Also on the menu is noodle favorites such as pad thai, drunken noodle, and chow mein and they also have vegetarian options. Jasmine Rice Thai also offers a variety of rice dishes as well as a selection of stir fry and curries. When I was here I got an order of the fresh spring rolls and for my entrée I got an order of the pineapple fried rice which is fried rice with shrimp, chicken, pineapple cashew nuts, onion and scallions and flavored with curry powder. The spring rolls were an excellent start to the meal and I found them very light and fresh. Their fresh spring rolls come filled with lettuce, carrots and vermicelli noodles and they are served with peanut sauce, making for a perfect light appetizer. The pineapple fried rice was a generous portion and it came out steaming hot, which was a delight. The dish was delicious and packed with flavor. I loved how the pineapple provided a tart sweetness to an otherwise savory meal. The rice was perfectly seasoned and I loved the chicken and the shrimp and what it added to the dish. 8 >> OCTOBER 2018 >> wbbeacon.com

>> community Energy Saver: Setting Your Thermostat for Comfort and Savings You can save money on your heating and cooling bills by simply resetting your thermostat when you are asleep or away from home. You can do this automatically without sacrificing comfort by installing an automatic setback or programmable thermostat. Using a programmable thermostat, you can adjust the times you turn on the heating or air-conditioning according to a pre-set schedule. Programmable thermostats can store and repeat multiple daily settings (six or more temperature settings a day) that you can manually override without affecting the rest of the daily or weekly program. 10 >> OCTOBER 2018 >> wbbeacon.com Thermostat Operation You can save as much as 10% a year on heating and cooling by simply turning your thermostat back 7-10 F for 8 hours a day from its normal setting. The percentage of savings from setback is greater for buildings in milder climates than for those in more severe climates. You can easily save energy in the winter by setting the thermostat to 68 F while you re awake and setting it lower while you re asleep or away from home. In the summer, you can follow the same strategy with central air conditioning by keeping your house warmer than normal when you are away, and setting the thermostat to 78 F (26 C) only when you are at home and need cooling. Set your thermostat at as high a temperature as comfortably possible and ensure humidity control if needed. The smaller the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall cooling bill will be. Although thermostats can be adjusted manually, programmable thermostats will avoid any discomfort by returning temperatures to normal before you wake or return home. Avoid setting your thermostat at a colder setting than normal when you turn on your air conditioner. It will not cool your home any faster and could result in excessive cooling and, therefore, unnecessary expense. A common misconception associated with thermostats is that a furnace works harder than normal to warm the space back to a comfortable temperature after the thermostat has been set back, resulting in little or no savings. In fact, as soon as your house drops below its normal temperature, it will lose energy to the surrounding environment more slowly. The lower the interior temperature, the slower the heat loss. So the longer your house remains at the lower temperature, the more energy you save, because your house has lost less energy than it would have at the higher temperature. The same concept applies to raising your thermostat setting in the summer -- a higher interior temperature will slow the flow of heat into your house, saving energy on air conditioning. Check out our home heating infographic to learn more about how heating systems and thermostats interact. Limitations for Homes With Heat Pumps, Electric Resistance Heating, Steam Heat, and Radiant Floor Heating Programmable thermostats are generally not recommended for heat pumps. In its cooling mode, a heat pump operates like an air conditioner, so turning up the thermostat (either manually or with a programmable thermostat) will save energy and money. But when a heat pump is in its heating mode, setting back its thermostat can cause the unit to operate inefficiently, thereby canceling out any savings achieved by lowering the temperature setting. Maintaining a moderate setting is the most cost-effective practice. Recently, however, some companies have begun selling specially designed programmable thermostats for heat pumps, which make setting back the thermostat cost-effective. These thermostats typically use special algorithms to minimize the use of backup electric resistance heat systems. Electric resistance systems, such as electric baseboard heating, require thermostats capable of directly controlling 120-volt or 240- volt circuits. Only a few companies manufacture line-voltage programmable thermostats. The slow response time -- up to several hours -- of steam heating and radiant floor heating systems leads some people to suggest that setback is inappropriate for these systems. However, some manufacturers now offer thermostats that track the performance of your heating system to determine when to turn it on in order to achieve comfortable temperatures at your programmed time. Alternately, a normal programmable thermostat can be set to begin its cool down well before you leave or go to bed and return to its regular temperature two or three hours before you wake up or return home. This may require some guesswork at first, but with a little trial and error you can still save energy while maintaining a comfortable home.

community << Choosing and Programming a Programmable Thermostat Most programmable thermostats are either digital, electromechanical, or some mixture of the two. Digital thermostats offer the most features in terms of multiple setback settings, overrides, and adjustments for daylight savings time, but may be difficult for some people to program. Electromechanical systems often involve pegs or sliding bars and are relatively simple to program. When programming your thermostat, consider when you normally go to sleep and wake up. If you prefer to sleep at a cooler temperature during the winter, you might want to start the temperature setback a bit ahead of the time you actually go to bed. Also consider the schedules of everyone in the household. If there is a time during the day when the house is unoccupied for four hours or more, it makes sense to adjust the temperature during those periods. Other Considerations The location of your thermostat can affect its performance and efficiency. Read the manufacturer s installation instructions to prevent ghost readings or unnecessary furnace or air conditioner cycling. To operate properly, a thermostat must be on an interior wall away from direct sunlight, drafts, doorways, skylights, and windows. It should be located where natural room air currents warm air rising, cool air sinking occur. Furniture will block natural air movement, so do not place pieces in front of or below your thermostat. Also make sure your thermostat is conveniently located for programming. 15 community << Turkey Frying Safety Tips for the upcoming holidays As we prepare for the approaching holiday season, we are providing safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association courtesy of all of our Volunteer Fire Departments that serve our communities across the West Bank. Turkey fryers NFPA discourages the use of outdoor gas-fueled turkey fryers that immerse the turkey in hot oil. NFPA continues to believe that turkey fryers that use cooking oil, as currently designed, are not suitable for safe use by even a well-informed and careful consumer. These turkey fryers use a substantial quantity of cooking oil at high temperatures and units currently available for home use pose a significant danger that hot oil will be released at some point during the cooking process. In addition, the burners that heat the oil can ignite spilled oil. The use of turkey fryers by consumers can lead to devastating burns, other injuries, and the destruction of property. NFPA urges those who prefer fried turkey to seek out professional establishments, such as grocery stores, specialty food retailers, and restaurants, for the preparation of the dish, or consider a new type of oil-less turkey fryer.
