1 Happy Valentines Day <3, Thursday, February 14, 2013 Even if you don t plant a garden, one can t deny the anticipation of spring in the middle of winter! Scanning the many garden catalogs, I m making a long list of all the colorful plants I want to put in my garden in a few months. I hope all of you are dreaming of your happy spring garden. The OAGC Region Spring Meeting will be Wednesday, April 24 at Floral Valley Community Center in Howard, Ohio. Registration will begin at 8AM. Knox County garden clubs are busy as bees preparing to host our Mad Hatter s Tea Party. I would like you to join me in wearing a decorated spring hat to the meeting. A small prize will be given in three categories: Most humorous, Most creative, and Best Use of Theme. These prize winners will be chosen by people s choice. You know, we re all mad here so join in!! Instead of a sales table, a silent auction to build our treasury has been requested by several members. I would like each club to donate a themed basket/s to be auctioned off by silent bid. Please place a tag on your basket with the value and items enclosed. One of these baskets would make a wonderful Mother s Day gift! Pat Wells will also have OAGC items for you to purchase. Our flower show Mad Hatter s Tea Party will showcase our regional talented designers and growers. The schedule is enclosed. Joy Sprang has included some different designs so have fun! Set up for the flower show will begin at 7:30AM. Our morning agenda will include electing a regional director. This shall be done by club presidents or their designated representative by secret ballot at 9:15AM.Our nominating committee is still looking for someone to step up to lead our region for the next two years. If interested in this position, please let me know. Also our morning will include Tim Daniels, new director of Mohican Outdoor School, giving an update on happenings there. Shelly Ehret, 2013 convention chair will be taking questions and volunteer sign up for the OAGC 2013 convention at Maumee Bay. Our morning program will be Golden Treasures on Little Thighs by Jerry and Gayle Paul, beekeepers. Look forward to their fun and informative program. They will also have honey, coffee, and bath and body selections for you to purchase. Our lunch will be prepared by The Pink Ladies. Enjoy honey glazed chicken, spring greens, red potatoes, and herb bread. Our unbirthday desserts will be served during our afternoon tea party with speaker Patricia Hasser, herbalist. During her program we will have tiered epergnes containing lovely sweets to enjoy. Her program titled Mad about Herbs will inform us of the many uses for herbs. Feel free to enhance the mood and bring your favorite tea cup and saucer to use to sample Pat s wonderful herb tea. (over)

2 Your new member roster for Region 7 is enclosed for your club s use. Remember that gardens for our Region 7 Outstanding Gardener or OAGC Beautification Projects need judged during the growing season so let me know ASAP if you have someone interested. Nominations for OAGC Gardener of the Year, Daisy Sticksel Conservation, Gladys Thomas Judge of the Year, Service, Membership Incentive, and Citation Awards need to be to Mary Lee Minor by March 15. If you know a worthy horticulture college student, please copy and pass along the OAGC Foundation scholarship application (page 102 of Handbook). The application must be received by March 15. On April 13 at 10:30AM we will have our 2013 Region 7 Spring board meeting at Ontario Public Library, 2221 Village Mall Drive, Ontario, OH A map for this location is enclosed. Please send a representative from your club. We shall discuss OAGC state issues, Region 7 Gardener s Day Out, and convention items. To save on time and travel, the 2013 convention committee will have a planning meeting at 1:30PM the same afternoon at this same location. Please plan to take a lunch break in Ontario between meetings, there are many restaurant choices in the area. Any questions, please call me. Region 7 is the host for the 2013 Convention and our president Mary Lee Minor would like each region 7 club to please donate two tasteful door prizes with a value of $15. These do not need to come out of your treasury. Ask a local business to donate something! Do not wrap these gifts (committee will take care of this) but do include a note stating the donor s name and mailing address so that we may send a thank you. Wayside Garden Club (committee chairs) will collect these prizes at our regional meeting to simplify logistics. 5 2013 Spring Flower Show OAGC Region 7 Mad Hatter s Tea Party Rules: General 1. This flower show will be judged according to the OAGC Exhibitors and Judges Handbook by an OAGC accredited judge. 2. Entries are open to anyone attending the meeting, juniors need not attend to enter. 3. Entries must be in place by 9:30 am April 24, Judging will be at 10:00am same day. Decision of the judge is final. Entries may not be removed until the end of the meeting. 4. The staging committee has the right to move any exhibit, remove because of disease, combine or sub-divide entries if the number of entries warrant. 5. The flower show committee will exercise due caution, but exhibitors are responsible for their own property. 6. Awards will be given to the first three places in each class of artistic and horticulture, and junior design. Best of Show and Judges Choice will be given in artistic adult classes,. Best of Show will be given in horticulture adult classes and Junior design. Rules: Horticulture 7. Horticulture entries must have been grown by the exhibitor whose name appears on the entry tag. Potted plants need to be in exhibitor s possession for 3 months. 8. Entry tags should be labeled with the correct variety names. An exhibitor may submit multiple horticulture entries per class as long as each entry is a different named variety. 9. Clear glass containers are the responsibility of the exhibitor. Rules: Artistic 10. Artistic designs must be the work of the exhibitor. Use of Ohio grown material is encouraged but not necessary. Each exhibitor limited to one entry per design class. 11. Designs should be no larger than 30w x42h x24d unless stated otherwise. 12. Treated, dried, or dried-painted materials may be used, but no painted fresh material or artificial plant material to be used. Accessories are allowed. 13. For each design, the exhibitor must state the entry title and list all materials used on a 3x5 card to be placed beside the design.
