2 For many ar1sts dealing with ecological issues today, the point of departure lies in devising community interven1ons and social situa1ons. 25 The design redirects storm water from a residential street to the rain garden, or bioretention cell, through a specially installed catch basin. It captures runoff from a one-acre drainage, removing oil, grease, heavy metals, nutrients, and sediment from the storm water.

35 Anna Metcalfe designed a community-based art project which would engage youth to tell their river-related stories on the surfaces of porcelain boats, 2007.

36 The teens each told their stories and then placed their boats in the water as a gesture of their personal role in building a community of concerned citizens focused on water issues.
