4 Alabaster Vase George and Mary Elizabeth bought this vase, by Pisani, in Florence whilst on a Grand Tour of the continent in The original image of Pliny s Doves, or four doves perched on the edge of a vase drinking and preening, was in mosaic form and dates to the 2 nd Century BC. It was a part of a mosaic by Sosus of Pergamum (now in present day Turkey). A copy of this mosaic was found at Hadrian s Villa in Tivoli by Cardinal Furetti in 1737 (see second picture). The mosaic was later bought by Pope Clement XIII, and is now in the Capitol Museum in Rome. Many reproductions of this image have been made in different art forms and are still made today as tourist souvenirs. Alabaster is a variety of the mineral Gypsum. It is a sedimentary stone which ranges in colour from translucent white to orange and dull red, caused by iron oxide. It looks very similar to marble but is chemically different. Alabaster has been used in Western Europe since the Middle Ages to produce altarpieces, statuettes, architectural pieces and full length effigies. As a calcium sulphate, it is soluble in water and so is mostly confined to the interior of houses and churches. The name alabaster comes from the Greek word alabastros supposedly after an Egyptian town where the stone was quarried. 3
5 Marble Bust of Shakespeare According to family legend, a young Shakespeare was caught poaching deer from the parkland of Sir Thomas Lucy I c.1583 and was subsequently tried by Sir Thomas in the Great Hall. It is said that Shakespeare took his revenge by portraying Sir Thomas as Justice Shallow in The Merry Wives of Windsor th century plaster bust of Sir Thomas Lucy I Copied from his tomb in St. Leonard s Church. Sir Thomas married Joyce Acton c.1546 and used her money to build the present house at Charlecote, (completed in 1558). 7 In 1565, he was knighted in the Great Hall by Sir Robert Dudley (Earl of Leicester and favourite of Queen Elizabeth I) in the Queen s absence. He died in th Century plaster bust of Queen Elizabeth I Copied from her tomb effigy in Westminster Abbey (by Maximilian Colt) with the addition of the crown which does not feature on the original effigy. Elizabeth I visited Charlecote in August 1572 and slept in a room where the Drawing Room is now. The bill for making the House ready for her stay came to 10 15s 7d. 4
8 18 th Century plaster bust of Sir Thomas Lucy II Copied from his tomb in St. Leonard s Church. Sir Thomas second wife, Constance Kingsmill, was worth little less than forty thousand pounds to her husband and helped consolidate the Lucy family s position. In 1572, Constance Kingsmill s father, Sir Robert Kingsmill of Sydmonton, purchased Highclere near Newbury. Highclere is now well known as the house featured in Downton Abbey. Sir Thomas and Constance had 16 children. He died in th Century plaster bust of Sir Thomas Lucy III Copied from his tomb in St. Leonard s church. Thomas Lucy III inherited Charlecote in He married Alice Spencer in 1610; they had thirteen children, many of whom can be seen in the family portrait above the fireplace. Sir Thomas enjoyed music and theatre, often putting on theatricals in the Great Hall. He died in 1640, at the age of 56, after being thrown from one of his favourite horses. 18 th century plaster bust of Joyce Acton 10 The wife of Sir Thomas Lucy I, Joyce was a twelve year old heiress with land in Sutton, Worcestershire when they married. It was her money that financed the building of the current house at Charlecote (completed in 1558). Joyce seems to have been a very strong, matriarchal woman; in her book Charlecote and the Lucys Lady Alice describes Joyce thus: She might rail and scold in the family circle, but when agents of the Privy Council came to Charlecote.. she tightened her lips, locked the door, drove off the servants and possessed herself in rigid patience. She died in
11 18 th Century plaster bust of Alice Spencer Copied from her tomb in St. Leonard s Church. Wife of Sir Thomas Lucy III, Alice shared her husband s love of books and according to one contemporary A great librarie shee had, wherein were many of our choicest English authors. Alice, Thomas and seven of their thirteen children appear in the family portrait above the fireplace. She died in White marble bust of George Hammond Lucy ( ) By William Behnes ( ) and inscribed with the date George Hammond Lucy ( ) inherited Charlecote in 1823 and married Mary Elizabeth Williams of Bodelwyddan, Wales in the same year. Their extensive renovations made Charlecote into the house we see today. 13 White marble bust of Mary Elizabeth Lucy By William Behnes ( ) and inscribed with the date Mary Elizabeth Williams ( ) lived at Bodelwyddan Castle, Wales, before marrying George Hammond Lucy in Their extensive renovations made Charlecote into the House we see today. 6
14 Plinths The various marble and pophyry plinths were purchased in Italy during the 1840 s. The following information came from Mary Elizabeth s Journal. They left Naples on the 24 th of February to return to Rome, arriving on the 4 th of March, and stayed in the Palazzo Georgio. While in Rome George had his likeness painted in oils, by Friedrich von Amerling, a German artist, George also bought the Cippolino pedestal, on which the Alabaster vase stands; he gave 275 piastres for it. He also bought the Egyptian porphyry pedestal on it stands George s bust, he paid 122 Piastres for it, Venice. It was here that George bought the marble floor for the great hall. Below is a copy of part of a letter from Mr Brown of University Street, London, dated March 12 th 1845 to George Lucy, Esq: Sir I am glad to learn the two oriental porphyry pedestals have been delivered at Charlecote safe, they are real oriental porphyry and have been in the city of Rome more than two thousand years as columns in the temples, and were made into dwarf pedestals, with the additition of the white marble bases, about 200 years since, and adorned one of the Palaces in Rome. The person who had them many years asked two thousand Roman scudi for them, and in consequence of his death I have been able to procure them for you on the moderate terms of one hundred and seventyfive pounds; they are worth much more. 7
