2 2017 UPDATE by Project COMEPCAFE Cauca, Colombia 1,400 member families Philz Donation: $80, / 70% of Total Philz is provided funding for a community-wide food security program with this 1,400-member coffee cooperative. 95% of families are indigenous. This is Comepcafe s first community development project outside coffee. The organization is very well organized, but has had no experience in participatory projects that include community voices -- new to this organization with a more traditional top-down structure. We've invested a significant amount of time helping Comepcafe develop leadership from the ground up at both the community and household levels as we've gone through the process of identifying and implementing strategies that will help Comepcafe build and sustain successful, community-managed food security strategies across its large membership base. The Agua Negra community is our first partner community. This isolated group of 200 indigenous families lives several hours away from the co-op s offices in Popayan. Families are energized, motivated, and absolutely committed to making sure that everyone in their community can become food-secure. To embed knowledge in the community, we recruited 13 Community Promoters to support our home garden program. Promoters are key resources, each supporting several families, to make sure participants in the program can overcome problems and manage their new home gardens

on their own in time. We've been training these promoters -- all members of Comepcafe -- to lead educational workshops for families starting home gardens, and to follow up with home visits.

They ve been working with150 families to make sure the community can succeed in building food security on a local level. Promoters are all coffee farmers selected for their commitment to assisting neighbors, with prior involvement with the co-op, and basic literacy skills. This team is establishing home gardens for participants, teaching them about food security, as well as strategies to access safe drinking water and improve their environmental practices. They also established vegetable and fruit seedling nurseries so families could grow produce more economically, and coordinated 3 community produce and seed exchanges, where traditional dishes were shared, along with community awareness about the importance of strong local food systems and culinary heritage. For food, you need water Promoters are also helping families build water security, with water filters for drinking, and conservation and protection of water resources. Participants With a more reliable supply, coffee farmers planted onions, cilantro, tomatoes, carrots, cabbage, green beans, black beans, native root vegetables, native squashes, peas, cassava, corn, oregano, chard, spinach, beets, peppers, thyme, papaya, brussel sprouts, chile peppers, plantains, lettuce, scallions, peanuts, strawberries, blackberries, cucumber, basil, mint, celery, pineapples, soy, oranges, mangoes, potatoes, and medical herbs. Traditional Produce and Seed Exchanges COMEPCAFE hosted three community exchange events in 2017, using a variety of crops grown on participants farms. In February, 300 people came together from the co-op and larger community, with co-op representatives making traditional dishes to share, and promote nutrition

4 and local food culture. Similar events were held in November and December, at a year-end celebration. These events were designed to create awareness of native food species, diet diversity, and diversification from coffee, bringing back lost food traditions and promoting good nutrition and assessing local demand in the process, to develop a local farmers market. Home garden support for families Promoters visited each farm to collect information about conditions, family needs, and goals for each home garden. They also learned to lead food security workshops. Community Seed and Plant Nurseries In 2017, eleven community plant nurseries were established. These communal spaces serve as new local resource to provide locally-grown crops to families. Distribution of materials Materials were distributed for home gardens and plant nurseries, including seeds, irrigation and garden management tools, and protective equipment. Materials included hoses and sprinklers for irrigation, barbed wire to protect gardens, rolls of plastic for delicate crops, machetes, and seeds were distributed to families. Nurseries are now growing tomato, guanabana, granadilla, and papaya.

Our goal is to help women coffee producers earn extra income by supplying the city of Jinotega with fresh, organic produce. Many women members of SOPPEXCCA already have home gardens, and are eager to use their small plots to grow vegetables for the market and supplement coffee income with organic produce. In 2017, 24 women enrolled in the program and are starting their new organic businesses. Program Coordinator Lilian Perez was hired to manage this new business. She has a degree in agronomy, and is the daughter of a SOPPEXCCA member. She is working with these new entrepreneurs and overseeing the creation of the Organic Market.

Ongoing Support and training During 2017, SOPPEXCCA staff provided technical assistance to participants, making sure that all of them have the necessary resources and are following appropriate

Women received trainings on pest control, soil preparation, basic garden management, and making organic fertilizers. All women have now received materials to implement their new businesses, including minerals for soil preparation and making raised beds, carrot, beet, squash, cucumbers, green beans, and herb seeds, and cabbage, lettuce, sweet pepper, onion, and celery seedlings. SOPPEXCCA School Gardens Philz Donation: $10,000 / 9% of Total Philz donated $10,000 to help sustain a fledgling school garden program in 3 area schools in Nicaragua. SOPPEXCCA is providing technical expertise and support to the 200 students, along with their teachers and parents in the communities of Santa Rosa, Los Alpes, and Los Cerrones. In 2017, they continued implementation of school gardens with Philz support in They evaluated the program s progress, shared lessons learned and accomplishments, and learned about growing fresh food from SOPPEXCCA s agronomists.

7 Teacher Exchange Teachers from the Santa Rosa and Los Alpes schools exchanged and shared 2017 accomplishments and challenges, then created work plans for the 2018 school year. They also mapped out their current school gardens and ideas for the coming year.

Food Security Workshops Nuevo Futuro s community promoters led workshops on water, health and nutrition, organic crop care and farm management. The team learned to make traditional recipes. Families created calendars of their crop cycles and shared their feedback on progress, and expectations for School Garden Program The school garden provides a physical lab for classroom content in math, science and language, and hands-on application in the garden. The school now has a restaurant to serve students the produce they grow, and students bring extra crops to their families and show them how to maintain their own home gardens. They use herbs from the garden to make products such as soap, shampoo and creams to sell in the community. They also produce and sell organic compost and seeds, investing earnings back into their school projects. New Partnership: Engineers Without Borders Food 4 Farmers is now working with Engineers Without Borders and Nuevo Futuro to develop irrigation systems and clean drinking water for families. In November, EWB visited the community to monitor water conditions and supply in Lisboa, and in 2018 will design communityappropriate, locally-managed irrigation systems so organic gardens at homes and at the school can thrive year-round.

Up next: Diversification for Income With Nuevo Futuro, we are developing potential business models and plans for supplemental income strategies. We completed a study identifying several strategies that have potential for generating income, including guinea pigs, chickens, eggs, corn, beekeeping and cassava production. Depending on funding, we will begin designing and implementing diversification strategies, starting with a small pilot project.
