Join us at City Hall (333 90th Street) on Saturday, April 22nd, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., to take advantage of the following FREE services: E-waste collection Document shredding Used tire collection Compost giveaway Acceptance of lightly used items for reuse and recycling Let s celebrate Earth Day together by keeping hazardous waste and recyclables out of landfills. Daly City Retrospect: 50th Anniversary of the Daly City Civic Center 50 years ago, Daly City s Civic Center was built to give the growing city and its public servants a place to work. At that time, almost 66,000 people lived here. Today, 106,000 people live in Daly City, and the Civic Center still proudly stands, providing work spaces for nearly 240 City employees. For more information on this event, please visit: Help Plant Trees Through Project Green Space! From now until the end of summer, you can help make Daly City green and clean by planting trees. Join our wonderful group of volunteers to plant new, drought-tolerant street trees across the City on Saturdays. Our goal is to plant 75 trees by the end of summer. If we reach our goal, within a year, 1,950 pounds of carbon dioxide will have been consumed by the trees we planted. If you re not able to volunteer, please consider adopting a tree to plant in your front yard. Daly City Civic Center being constructed in Please join us in making Project Green Space a great success, and help make Daly City cleaner, greener, and more resilient for generations to come! Daly City is responsible for maintaining the closed Mussel Rock Landfill, which is directly on the coast. Let s keep our organic waste and recyclables out of landfills to save space. Food waste buried in landfills emits methane as it breaks down. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) that is 85 times more powerful than CO2 over a 20-year period. That s alot of warming potential for our climate! to recycle glass, plastic, metal and paper. Your recycle cart is FREE of charge to encourage higher recycling rates. That s right, you can actually get free compost for use in your garden, all from food scraps and yard trimmings in our community. 6 TIPS FOR COMPOSTING: Will the organic waste smell bad? You already throw away food scraps in your regular trash. By using your green cart, you are simply sorting the organic waste from other solid waste. There really shouldn t be more odors than before. But here are some tips to keep a cleaner compost cart: Line your kitchen pail with newspaper or compostable bags (use bags that have the BPI certified logo). Store food scraps in the freezer to reduce odor before placing them in your green cart on your collection day. Layer your yard trimmings and food scraps. How can I reduce the amount of food waste in my family? The Bay Area Recycling Outreach Coalition (BayROC) provides useful tools and resources for reducing food waste. Visit Where should I place my carts out on collection day? Place your carts out with lid openings towards the street and wheels against the curb for quick service. Keep your cart lids closed at all times! Ravens, raccoons and other wildlife love to make a mess of garbage in overflowing containers. Republic Services might not collect your garbage if it s overflowing. Don t set your carts in the street if your garbage collection day is the same day as street sweeping, so as not to block our street sweeping trucks. Instead, put them on the sidewalk at the curb. HELP KEEP OUR COMMUNITY BEAUTIFUL WITH THESE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Adopt a tree or rain garden through Project Green Space. Daly City residents can adopt free, drought-tolerant street trees outside of their homes by agreeing to provide weekly watering. More info at ProjectGreenSpace. Volunteer to plant trees.
