1 Head Gardeners Report Activity: Making tree circles around Heritage Tree s in the Park Purpose of Activity: Capel Manor professional gardeners group creating tree circles around some of the parks Heritage Tree s. This is so they learn about tree root protection zones and how tree circles increase the longevity of tree s which is especially important in Heritage Tree s. Partner Organisation: Capel Manor, Community Interest Company. Description: To work in partnership with Capel Manor on creating tree circles around heritage trees and young establishing trees. 12 students will learn about tree protection and why tree circles aid longevity and encourage beneficial mycorrhizae while protecting the tree from compaction and ride on mowers, as well as gaining new hands on skills to develop confidence along with developing their practical skills and techniques. Number of participants: 12
2 Tree Circles aid longevity and encourage beneficial mycorrhizae while protecting the tree from compaction and ride on mowers. Horticultural Students putting compost and bark chip around our trees.
3 Activity: Rose pruning and manuring. Purpose of activity: To teach Horticultural students autumn and winter rose pruning and the importance of winter manuring. Partner Organisation: Capel Manor, Community Interest Company Description: Capel did a light Autumn prune in November with a follow up winter prune in January. Afterwards the beds were prepared and manured. The heritage Landscape will be better interpreted and explained Students will have learnt about the Parks heritage and developed new skills as well as having had an enjoyable experience and having contributed to the local community project. Number of participants: 12 x two visits, total 24. Capel Manor students Hoeing, bed preparation and Winter Rose Pruning in the Rose Garden.
4 Rose Beds pruned and freshly Manured. Activity: Wisteria Pruning Purpose of Activity: Capel Manor Lv 3 students learn summer and winter pruning of Wisteria. Partner Organisation: Capel Manor, Community Interest Company. Description: Capel Manor students prune and learn hands on practical pruning techniques for Wisteria in the Italian Garden. Number of participants: 12 Activity: Preparation and Bulb planting Purpose of Activity: Capel Manor Lv 1 Students prepare new landscaped beds in the Heritage area and plant a variety of bulbs. Partner Organisation: Capel Manor, Community Interest Company. Description: Capel Manor students learn bed preparation, planting design, bulb planting and what kind of Heritage species the Victorians were planting. Number of participants: 14 x 2 visits, total of 28.
5 Activity: Horticultural volunteers working in the New Community Kitchen Garden. Purpose of Activity: To encourage local people to be active and to grow your own vegetables organically, whilst at the same time educating and inspiring healthy eating. Volunteers will learn more about heritage and gain new skills, develop their relationships with Gunnersbury and feel that their contribution is valued. We have volunteers from the local community, Capel Manor college and are joined every week by Ambitious about Autism college. Partner organisations: Capel Manor, Ambitious about Autism. Description: 2018 is the second year the Community Garden has been opened to the public with an overwhelmingly positive response. Community Garden Volunteers will learn about growing your own vegetables, using organic and sustainable methods. Recently the community garden group have been preparing and sowing vegetable varieties and creating links with other charities, e.g. Ambitious about Autism. They have gained new skills and understand more about heritage vegetable varieties. This year we will have begun to develop the History of Food Timeline Beds have various community groups and park stakeholders, which should be complete by the end of next year. Number of participants: About every Wednesday morning.
6 Activity: Eco Talent Design and planting of a Medieval Physic Garden along the Timeline Beds. It s a great opportunity and they bring 500 to the project which cover plants and materials. Purpose of Activity: Inspire young people to make positive life choices. Eco Talent is designed for young people in Ealing aged years. They will learn about the design and history of Medieval/monastic gardens along with the medicinal plants they used for remedies. They will learn to design and setting out a formal parterre and planting medicinal herbs. Partner Organisations: Vinspired, Ealing Youth & Connexions. Description: Designing and planting a Medieval/Monastic garden for the educational Timeline beds. Eco Talent prepare the beds, measure out, and source all the plants and other materials as well as doing the actual planting. Number of participants: 16 visits of 2 3hrs by 5 young people.
7 Planting Box hedging plus interplanting with Monastic herbs and medicinal plants.
8 Activity: Youth Justice Reparation placement. Purpose of Activity: Working on the nature trail Young people who are not in education, training or employment will learn a range of Horticultural skills and develop the confidence needed of working in a public park. They will learn about the heritage value of the park, which may change their attitude and awareness. Partner Organisations: Youth & Connexions. Description: Tasks involve clearing and rejuvenating overgrown areas. Clearing brambles from the nature trail and planting to increase the natural diversity of the habitat. A wider range of people will learn about heritage and develop new skills while having an enjoyable and motivating experience. Number of participants: 2 every Friday morning. Activity: Community Pay Back Purpose of Activity: Do a wide range of work throughout the Park in order to fulfil Community Payback hours. Partner Organisations: Hounslow Council Description: Tasks vary from leaf raking, weeding, mulching and digging beds etc. Number of participants: About 10 people every Monday all day.
