Little Mountain Riley Park (LM- RP) Community Garden Charette Garden Design Session May 23, 2015 To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow A. Hepburn Minutes taken by Jennifer W. 1. 1pm- 2pm: Garden site visit and tours, open to all 2. 2pm: Meeting begun. Introduced by Food Network Coordinator, Joanne MacKinnon. Facilitate by Landscape architect, Rob Mitza. Approx.30 people in attendance. General minutes as follow: 1
Rob reviewed (see attached ppt slides) different program models for community gardens. Here is an overview, with more details on ppt slides: a) DIGS: communal and allotments, raised beds. This garden was designed to be a sort of escape from every day. It includes work parties, hoop houses, community farm stand, help yourself food box. It requires time, certain levels of expertise, and 1 main person to run/administer the garden. Raised garden beds that are 8 ft X 8 ft horseshoe (with 2 ft walkways) shaped to maximize growing space and provide non- linear plots. Include 6 community beds (designated to community groups) for example: community kitchens, Little Acres. Also has an orchard and food forest zone. They designed the garden based on the space they had. b) Brewery Creek: Focused on community development. Includes 40 family plots and 2 community groups plus 1 learning institution. $20 membership annually. Operates through a committed and communicative Board of Directors. Develops work parties and committees responsible for niche groups for example, a herb garden group. Requires a lot of organization. Includes seed exchanges, kids gardening camp where kids work with gardeners ( Little Diggers Garden Club ) and kids are given one small plant with a journal; they are asked to try different veggies each week and get stickers for trying them all. This garden also has art in the park (community artists showcased around the garden). As a fundraising idea they have had Urban Permaculture (2 day workshop) as yearly fundraiser. Feels like home to all with half garden food and half flowers. Soil is bought as a group and shared costs to everyone with plots. Soil is spread and turned together, as a shared responsibility. Composting: every person with a plot must take a mandatory workshop (2 times year) about composting, and everyone has to maintain it together. The pit of death is for people to bury stuff if they don t know how to compost. The idea is that people must be organized, help with organization, and everyone must participate in exchange for a plot! LM- RP Community Garden: Notes from community discussion: Physical site was discussed Pros and Cons & what we want: The idea that it should feel like home to everyone that walks in Accessibility Book exchange with food and community cookbooks Issue of fencing i.e. keeping dogs out (note: shrubs like azaleas work well for dogs out). We will need a gate or fence 2
Issue of shade what can be grown in the shade? Someone mentioned that this is rainforest area and we can find plants suited. Not every garden is perfect or suits everyone. The fact of matter is: we have a site and we must take note of what is there, how we can use it. This is the reality. As Rob said we need to consider and manipulate the garden s flaws and make them sparkle. Mt. Pleasant Park is a good example of what our park can be like (16 th and Ontario) LITTLE MOUNTAIN- RILEY PARK COMMUNITY GARDEN: A PLACE FOR IDEAS & INTERACTION, GROWTH FOR ALL Garden Pros It is public and accessible, and may be used to bring people together Accessible to moms/dads/kids/wheelchairs, etc Close to bike route Non- linear, has good flow and shape It is a home for us and others Has a field house Ed Shum s garden is close by Can connect to future developments Garden Cons It is public and may result in vandalism or overcrowding Too much shade Debris from trees (requires extra maintenance) High traffic area Noise (between parking lot and farmers market) The nearest bus stop is not close enough for some people soil remains a concern some people think the garden is just in the wrong spot 3
Garden Potentials : A focus on communal rather than allotted land sharing bounty (food share box) sharing library (garden and recipe books) garden work parties committees based on interest and skills/involvement (sub committees) community and food education art in the park/artist connections music in the park/music connections demo garden (not just growing food) garden tutorials community organization workshops seed exchanges kids plots perennial section herbal and medicinal plants foraging synergy with market fundraising activities potlucks blessing ceremonials plant sale exchanges painting in the park yoga, tai chi, meditation engage people in apartments security and safety (think about) integrated and intercultural accessibility access to bathrooms gazebo and covered areas picnic tables benches that face each other and promote dialogue and neighbour interaction shared shed water access doggie bag station tools and taps Fundraising idea: Bicycle powered smoothies Space for festivals (see photos below for more suggestions) 4
List of tangibles and tools needed at site (note: these were arranged in categories and may need to be re- categorized Flower area for appeal Meeting area Willow tunnels Fence (live/interesting) (keep dogs out) Flowers on outside of fence Permaculture Capture of rainwater Plastic doggie bags Poop scoopers Washroom: wheelchair accessible portapottie Gazebo/stage First aid kit 5
Shelving for shed Shed / Storage shed Communal library exchange Bulletin board Composting Rain barrel Water access Rock garden w/ herbs Bike racks Walkways Greenhouse/hoophouse Lighting Bee keeping (honey, pollination) Fruit Trees/Espaliered (Note: espaliered requested more than once) Benches/seating Bee hive Hoses (connection to water) Rain barrel Water barrel Solar panel Hot house Vertical trellises Shed Environmental monitoring equipment (soil thermometers, moisture, ph, etc) Edible forest School garden bed Respect for the nature City wants us to build more gardens Herb garden Solar energy for lighting Wood burning oven Composter + composter program Composting toilet Hammock Slope for rain capture Resource centre Theatre area (amphitheatre) 6
