1 The North Jersey Orchid Society NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2013 The Official Publication of the North Jersey Orchid Society AT OUR NEXT MEETING ON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 TH, ALAN KOCH OF GOLD COUNTRY ORCHIDS WILL RETURN TO TELL US ABOUT UNDERSTANDING DENDROBIUMS Alan Koch owns and operates Gold Country Orchids where he specializes in miniature and compact Cattleyas. Alan started growing orchids in 1969 with three Cymbidiums given to him by an aunt. While in college, he became interested in other orchids and discovered many would grow outdoors in Southern California. He has moved five times as his orchid obsession has led to the need for more growing space. With the last move, he purchased 10 acres of land in Lincoln, California for his 300,000 orchids. He is recognized as an expert in the Brazilian Cattleya alliance and a trend setter in miniature Cattleya breeding. Alan has been published in the Orchid Digest, and the American Orchid Society magazines. He has also been published in the proceedings of the World Orchid Conference. He is an internationally known speaker. He is a past member of the AOS Judging Committee, and the Research Committee, as well as an Accredited Judge and is Vice-chair and Training Coordinator for the California Sierra Nevada Judging Center. Alan also served two terms on the Orchid Digest Executive Committee and Board of Directors, and served two terms as a Trustee for the AOS. Alan will be giving our society a discount of 20% if you preorder by September 7 th and he brings the plants to the meeting. See a partial list on page 3 for details. From the President Hi Everyone, The Summer Auction was a success! We made nearly $2,000 thanks mostly to generous donations from Marc Hachachourian (for which we are grateful) and the thoughtful planning of Sharon Chaplinsky. We also appreciate the donation of items from Orchid- Wiz and Repot-me obtained through the arm-twisting of Carrie Buchman (just joking they gave willingly). Again, many thanks to our fabulous auctioneer, Patti Lee for an entertaining night. The BBQ -themed dinner was a great hit and a welcome change to the regular menu. Thanks Bill for coordinating this with Hanover Manor. Kudos to Marion Israel, Carrie Buchman, Bill Stender, and Lisa Choplo for their work in pulling this together! Let's all get in a festive mood to celebrate the last days of summer by wearing Hawaiian shirts to the next meeting. Shirts with an orchid pattern or print will get an extra door prize ticket. See you there, Richard Page 1 SEPTEMBER 2013

2 Vice Presidents Corner, Greetings fellow Orchid Geeks! Happy Fall!! Well, maybe happy, but the rain has been a little intense lately. I have been working very hard at keeping bacterial and fungal infections at bay because of the high rain volumes this summer. I have had mixed results, and unfortunately being away for two weeks on vacation does not help when you need constant supervision. Didn t we have a GREAT time at our August BBQ and auction?!? For those of you that missed it, well, you really missed a fun evening filled with great food and a great auction. Hopefully this will be a lesson to you and you will make it next year. This month Al Koch of Gold Country Orchids will be speaking. If you remember Al s talk last year on how the species in the background of our hybrids affects their culture you know how good Al can speak and share his knowledge. This month s talk on understanding Dendrobiums should be great as well. Lynne and I just got back from a beautiful vacation in Germany. One day I was posting some pictures on Facebook and Patti Lee commented if I had seen orchids in Germany? I thought that was funny, but a few days later we were on the island of Mainau on the Bodensee (Lake Constance). Just think of a lake about 3 times the size of Lake George with an island in the middle that has the nick name The Flower Island and you get an idea of what an amazing place it was. Well, we came across some beautiful vandas! I have enclosed a few pictures of our trip. Happy Growing! Bill Page 2 SEPTEMBER 2013

3 We are desperately seeking an individual or a group of individuals to be the exhibit chair(s). The exhibit chair(s) will plan, organize, and coordinate the set up of the NJOS display for our show and other shows that we participate in (currently Deep Cut and SEPOS). Our show is in January, Deep Cut is in February, and SEPOS is in April. There will be people to help deliver plants and also help with the set up. No experience is necessary, all one needs is to be creative and have an interest in floral design and display. Please speak with me or Anita Gibaldi if you are interested or have any questions. It would be a shame not to have a display at our own show. Richard Sneak peek our speaker in September - Alan Koch of Gold Country Orchids Alan will be bringing plants, and members can place pre-orders at a discount. Here s what Alan says: I offer a 20% discount and free freight on all preorders that are received prior to Sept 7 th. To get this discount from the website your members have to do the following. Enter the following discount code GCOD case sensitive Enter ship to a society under freight and then under comments list the society the plants are being delivered to. 4 Due to an error on my part, I have misplaced, lost or thrown away the plant table lists which Russ Polo sent to me from the August meeting. Here are some lovely pictures of several of the flowers on the plant table on August 8 th. Anita Page 4 SEPTEMBER 2013

9 September Autumn in New York These last few weeks of New York City summer have been great for orchids, both humid and relatively cool. (Though all that rain is a problem.) As we approach autumn it's hard to know what to expect. We recommend use of a good outdoor minimum/maximum thermometer, which will record daytime highs and nighttime lows while you sleep or aren't home and watch the Weather Channel religiously! Don't let outdoor orchids get rained on or otherwise become waterlogged. Excess water is always trouble. Keep the plants on the dry side or rots and bacteria will invade your soggy plants. Cool-growing orchids usually enjoy New York's temperate early fall combination of bright light and cool temperatures for both night and day temperatures are critical for these plants. They need days preferably below 80F and 5O-55F nights for best health. A 15F drop between day and night temperatures is usually enough to see all but the coolest cool-growers through the summer. A 20-25F drop is even better but is harder to achieve; watering only in the evening may help, but be careful not to get the foliage wet. To further reduce stress, do not overwater or allow foliage to stay wet. Keep track of the changing angle of the sun as the seasons progress. Plants that were formerly shaded may now be getting full sun at midday. By mid-october get ready to bring the most tender plants back indoors from their summer spot, including vandas, ascocendas, aerangises and phalaenopsis. Growth will halt and spikes may abort after prolonged exposure to temperatures below 58F, and crown rot may result. Tougher, cool-growing cymbidiums, sophronitis, barkerias, brasstas, Mexican laelias (L anceps, L. rubescens, L. autumnalis), Laefia purpurata and some of its primary hybrids, and cool-growing paphs can stay out a few more weeks. If there are a few prematurely chilly nights, you can protect the outdoor plants by loosely covering the area with light cloth tarps. Make sure the foliage is dry! Looking for Trouble Check outdoor plants FREQUENTLY for pests, especially new growths and spikes. Inspect plants carefully before you bring them back indoors. If you find any pests or problems, treat promptly Humidity plunges in the fall. Indoor plants + hot dry weather = spider mites and false spider mites. Wipe leaves with a damp, soapy paper towel, rinse with clear water, and let dry. Do not use chemicals on sunny days or any time the temperature is over 80F. Chemical burn will ensue. Wait until cool evening hours, or a rainy day (for indoors plants), before applying treatment. Also water the plants several hours before applying pesticide or fungicides. ALSO remember, if you use commercial drenching fungicide, you must water the plant with clear water following application. How soon you re-water depends on whether fungicide was used as a spray (wait about half an hour) or a drench (about minutes) or as a soak (5-10 minutes afterwards). Failure to leach excess fungicide can eventually lead to toxic buildup in plant tissues. Back at the Ranch... Warm, still days can cause deadly heat buildup in sunny windows. Air condition-ing can dry out the room to the point that buds will blast and new growths will shrivel. To fight these problems, open windows at the top AND bottom for maximum airflow, and use humidifiers and fans to combat still, dry air. Plants under lights should be carefully monitored. Fluorescent tubes and HID bulbs generate heat, and so do the ballasts. Gentle air currents should be adequate to blow away the heat without desiccating the plants. Oscillating fans should create just enough breeze to lower leaf temperature Run a humidifier. Elena Gaillard & Michael Morales Manhattan Orchid Society Got the Munchies Give fall-blooming cattleyas, cymbidiums, paphs and phals "bloom booster" fertilizers now. These low-nitrogen, high-phosphorus formulas, such as , will encourage better flower production. However, if you didn't provide the proper conditions to initiate spiking, bloom booster won't itself create spikes. (Conversely, too much nitrogen may help suppress blooming in many orchids. Talk about picky.) Any plants in active growth or in spike/bud/ flower should be fed regularly with balanced fertilizer. Looking for Buds Stenoglottis longifolium should be spik-ing and blooming now. The foliage of this deciduous terrestrial will brown and die as the spike ages. Cut off the withered leaves, but water sparingly as long as buds form and open. Deciduous catanthes (such as C vestida) should also be spiking as their foliage now withers and falls. Fall-blooming cattleyas are starting to make their shows. Now blooming: Aerangis biloba, A. luteoalba var. rhodosticta, A. laurentii, A. kirkn; aeranthes species and hybrids (such as Agranthes Grandalena); Brassavola cucuilata, 8. nodosa and its hybrids; Broughtoniasanguinea; Epidendrum ciliare, Epi. difforme; Laelia anceps, L. pumila, L. rubescens; Masdevallia floribunda, M. infracta, M. veitchiana; Oncidiurn micropogon, 0. crispum, 0. forbesii; large and small yellow Oncidiurn hybrids; Paphiopedilum Maudiae and related hybrids; Phalaenopsis equestris, P lindenii, P. violacea and many of their hybrids.
