Introducing Global Plants A comprehensive database for the study of plant life September 2016 Welcome! The webinar will begin shortly. All participants will be muted; please use the Questions window to chat with the organizers and ask questions.
Today s Demo» Brief overview of Global Plants and the Global Plants Initiative» Demonstration of Global Plantshttp://plants.jstor.org» Questions» How to set up a trial
JSTOR JSTOR, a research platform that enables discovery, access, and preservation of scholarly content, merged with ITHAKA in 2009 and is a service of the organization. ITHAKA is a not-for-profit organization that helps the academic community use digital technologies to preserve the scholarly record and to advance research and teaching in sustainable ways. We pursue this mission by providing innovative services that aid in the adoption of these technologies and that create lasting impact.
About Global Plants Global Plants is a comprehensive database of plant type specimens and complementary content» The largest of its kind more than 2.5 million plant type specimens and other foundational materials» Contains the contributed collections of more than 300 herbaria from 70 countries
About the Global Plants Initiative (GPI) GPI represents a 10 year collaborative effort» Began with a small group of herbaria, then called the African Access Initiative, expanded to incorporate herbaria and plants from Latin America, and then became global in scale» Today, GPI partner organizations from Argentina to Zimbabwe capture data and use digital technologies to create high resolution images of type specimens from their collections Global Plants partners at 2013 Annual Meeting held by Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama City, Republic of Panama
The Global Plants Initiative Partners All biologists will have access to the fundamental data of type and associated material, so basic to the identification and nomenclature of the world s flora through Global Plants a truly remarkable pinnacle of collaborative activity and success. The Linnean Society of London, United Kingdom.
New Partners Some of our newest partners:» California Department of Food and Agriculture (US)» Oman Botanic Garden (Oman)» National Museum of Nature and Science (Japan)» Taiwan Forestry Research Institute (Taiwan)» University of Alaska (US)» University of Bern (Switzerland)
About GPI and JSTOR In partnership with JSTOR, GPI has produced a sustainable resource that the international scientific community can rely upon.» JSTOR acts as the virtual hub, providing the production systems, support for digitizing the types, a platform for discovery, and longterm storage» Educational, cultural, governmental, and other research institutions contribute annual fees for access to parts of the database
About Global Plants: Plant Type Specimens» More than two million plant type specimens» Act as vouchers for scientific plant names» Essential reference object for a name
About Global Plants: Complementary Material
New in 2016 In 2016:» More than 167,000+ plant type specimens from herbaria in Australia, Colombia, Netherlands, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, and many others
