1 Bucks County Orchid Society Newsletter November 2007 Meeting: Thurs. Nov. 15 7:30 pm Churchville Nature Center 501 Churchville Lane Churchville, PA Phragmipedium kovachii A trek through the jungle to the habitat site of kovachii by Glen Decker Our speaker for November is Glen Decker. Glen began growing orchids at the age of 15 and holds the degree of Associate in Applied Science in Ornamental Horticulture. Glen is presently the owner of Piping Rock Orchids ( in Galway, New York. He was the previous chair of the American Orchid Society s Publications Committee and is presently a Director of the Orchid Digest Corporation. Glen has won numerous AOS awards, including the Butterworth Prize, Nax Trophy, WW Wilson Award and the Carlyle A. Luer Award. He has appeared in Martha Stewart s Better Living Magazine and on a PBS TV special Orchid Delirium. He recently rewrote the Slipper section of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden s The Best Orchids for Indoors and was the technical editor for the Orchids for Dummies book. Glen and Phragipedium kovachii are the subject of the cover article for this months s Orchid Magazine. In 2001, the discovery of this slipper orchid in Peru captured the imaginations of orchid enthusiasts worldwide. Glen made it his goal to successfully cultivate and hybridize this awesome orchid. Glen will bring plants for sale. Jean Norton, Program Chair 1

Werther 1131 Rossiter Lane Radnor, PA By way of an explanation: There was no show table for October. The lists below are a corrected version of the winners. Forms for the greenhouse growers, (the green ones), were inadvertently used by a windowsill grower. Unfortunately, yours truly forgot to bring both the forms and the signs designating the orchid categories. As the meeting was starting, I dashed home (I live a mile from the center), to get the show table stuff. It was more my fault than theirs. For new and old members, we have two forms for the show table; green ones for greenhouse growers and orchid colored ones for windowsill growers. Also, VERY IMPORTANT put your name on the back of the form for your entry. 3
