1 South Coast C&SS n e w s l e t t e r January 2011 GENERAL MEETING: Sunday, January 9, 1:30 pm South Coast Botanic Garden PROGRAM: Our new year will start with a hands on presentation entitled, "Blue Collar Bonsai" by Ralph Massey. He will present a workshop for low cost succulent staging, designed to enhance imagination and reduce cost using inexpensive plants and materials. Club members, and their guests desiring to participate, are requested to bring: teaspoon, pencil, tweezers, garden clippers small placemat or plastic sheet as a work surface. Plants, planters and staging materials will be provided for a small fee of $2.00, if desired, on a first come first serve basis - so get there early. Ralph was introduced to plants in 1971 by a friend. He has been a member of the San Gabriel, Sunset and Los Angeles clubs. He worked at the Huntington with John Trager on the ISI program for two years and has volunteered at sales and in the greenhouse there as well as numerous club functions for about thirty five years. He divides his time between his art studio and greenhouse. Notice for Meeting Plant Sellers In order to keep the new tables in good condition, the garden requests that the tables be covered to protect the surface. BOARD MEETING NOTICE: There will be a Board meeting after the January general membership meeting to discuss plans for our April Show/Sale. I hope to start at 3:45 PM and WILL adjourn NLT 4:30. In addition to the current Officers, I would like Jim Hanna, Jim Gardener, Laurel Woodley, Lucy Hemingway, Danielle Linden, Judi Woo-Sato and Dick Kohlschreiber to attend. I haven t finished the Agenda as I write this, but will try to send it to Board members before the meeting. If you have issues you would like to put on the Agenda, please let me know as soon as possible. Normally new items will be placed at the bottom of the Agenda, but can be expedited if time is an issue. Time permitting during the meeting, I would like you to share your ideas about how we can improve our club in the coming year. 2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE FOR JANUARY 2011 I hope you all had a joyous Christmas. I wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year; and that all your plants flower, except perhaps those that are monocarpic. I received many positive comments on the Holiday pot-luck, I especially want to acknowledge, Danny Westall for (again) cooking the ribs (did you know he had to get up at 3AM to start the process?) and Jim Gardner for slicing and dicing them; Rose Arbuckle for bringing table cloths and Christmas decorations (again); Carol Causey for bringing order out of chaos in the Kitchen; and everyone who pitched in before and after. I wish I had a list of who brought in dishes and the name of the dish. Next year we should label each dish with that information. As I reflect on last year, I am struck that we must doing something right because we added about two dozen new members this year. Surely a part of this increase is due to joining CGCI and the subsequent visibility it brought to our Club to plant enthusiasts in the area. Partly as a result of joining CGCI, a number of changes have been made in how our Club operates. And, as several of you said at meetings during the past year, meeting notices in local newspapers sent in by our new Communications/ Publicity Chair Danielle Linden were instrumental in the increase. You can expect more changes in the coming year. I hope you will approve of them, but as usual, making changes requires initiative, work, flexibility, and most of all your involvement. If you have a complaint tell me. If you want to praise, consider sending a Thank You note to Melinda for the Newsletter, and if you have an idea or suggestion contact one the Chairs or me. Only plant condition will be judged, not the pot or other enhancements. Open entries must have been held for at least 1 year. All aspects of the entry will be judged, including plant condition, and pot. Note: Members showing in the Open class may not enter plants in the Novice class during the year, but may re-enter the Novice class starting in January. JUDGING Entrants will receive 6 points for first place, 4 points for second place, 2 points for third place and 1 point for showing a plant that is not disqualified. The judge may award one 1 st place and up to two 2 nd and two 3 rd places in each category. If plants are not deemed to be of sufficient quality, no place will be awarded. At the discretion of the judge and/or Mini-show Chair, a plant may be disqualified or removed due to disease of infestation or because it is not the correct genera. Page 3

You should have your reservations in by now. Don t miss the best presenters anywhere and the social fun of a World -Wide C&S gathering. The Huntington Botanical Gardens, in continuing cooperation with the CSSA and their affiliate clubs, once again offers the Desert Forum, a Free Day for CSSA members and members of affiliate clubs on January 15, Arrive at 9:30AM for a full day of the Huntington. See Schedule on Page 5 HAVE YOU PAID YOUR DUES? If NOT, you re in luck because dues for FY2011 are not payable until April 9 th and won t become delinquent until June 12th. For now the amount will remain the same, but the Board will be discussing dues, probably before April. EDITOR NOTES: Taking over the duties of Newsletter editor is a fun challenge for me and a hard act to follow. Vera Thaxton edited the Newsletter for over ten years! I visited her in La Quinta. Her home is in a wonderful location right at the edge of open park land. She shared cuttings with me from her colorful garden. SCCSS IS ON FACEBOOK The Communications Committee has created a Facebook page to promote our club, share news and event information, and extend the reach of our online presence through the use of social media. Our page is also a great place to connect with other like-minded, plant loving Facebook users! If you are a Facebook user please add us to your profile by searching for South Coast Cactus & Succulent Society at the search bar at the top of your Facebook page and clicking on the Like button on our page. While you are at it, check out the Facebook pages of other local garden club and botanical gardens that are linked on the SCCSS Facebook page such as: the Cactus and Succulent Society of America, Orange County Cactus & Succulent Society, South Coast Botanic Garden, LA County Arboretum & Botanic Garden, and the San Diego Cactus & Succulent Society (to name a few). I have always loved succulents and my garden is full of them in the ground and in many, many pots. However, I am a complete novice when it comes to the names of anything. By volunteering to be editor, I hope to improve my knowledge of these wonderful, forgiving plants. The deadline for submissions will be the 20 th of the month. If you have any interesting items or photos to share, feel free to submit them for consideration.
