The Auckland Botanic Gardens and the Friends of the Auckland Botanic Gardens are pleased to open the call for artists submissions for Sculpture in the Gardens Artists are invited to complete the application form below, provide details of their proposed work and sign their agreement to the Terms and Conditions of Entry. Background The Gardens The Auckland Botanic Gardens is 150 acres of beautifully curated plant collections, showcasing plants from various countries. It attracts about 1 million visits per year. The site hosts a variety of activities and events, all of which attract an audience of diverse age, ethnicity and interests. The areas to exhibit in are varied - from expansive lawns to lakes, stands of trees to masses of flowers. The settings allow many stories to be told via sculpture. A collection of 22 sculptures permanently reside at the Gardens, largely works purchased by the Friends from previous Sculpture in the Gardens exhibitions. Our vision is create a permanent, internationally recognised collection of major New Zealand works that relate to the Gardens. The exhibition Sculpture trail - The main component of the event is an outdoor sculpture trail of exhibited works, which leads visitors around the Gardens plant collections. Time frame - The exhibition will run for over three and a half months from 16 November March 2020, when the Gardens are at their most vibrant and the visitation is highest. Visitor numbers - The last exhibition was viewed by over 300,000 visitors to the Gardens, with 60,000 attending specifically to see the Indoor gallery - Selected artists will also be invited to exhibit in the indoor gallery. Sales - Each exhibiting sculpture (indoor or out) is offered for sale (with a sales commission retained by the Friends). Concept gallery - A gallery is created with framed original concept sketches by the exhibiting artists (as per the concept sketched submitted with the applications). Public engagement programme - Guided walks, talks and workshops are held throughout the Exhibiting artists may have the opportunity to participate.
