Zero Hero Acknowledgement As we all attempt to reduce our environmental footprint with sustainable living and construction practices, we need constant reminders that the goal is to eliminate the impact all together, achieving true zero. Zero is where we shift from doing less bad and start doing more good. Sustainable St. Louis is sponsoring the Zero Hero Challenge withthe intent to advance the understanding and implementation of net-zero and ultimately net positive systems and thinking building upon great work that people are already doing. This year the Growing Green Awards partnered with Sustainable St. Louis to identify nominees who have achieved Zero Hero status. Those nominees are: Save-a-Lot Novus International, Inc. Joe Edwards & The Moonrise Hotel Congratulations to these nominees are who are setting for the rest of us to continue to improve our journey toward net positive living.
Emerging Leader Awardee: Courtney Howard Courtney is instrumental in the sustainability initiatives at Cannon s downtown office, but also shines a light on the different ways individuals can green their life through her own examples. Outside of work, she volunteers at several community gardens and does not have a personal vehicle choosing to get around by walking, public transit or a WeCar. Courtney Howard, Cannon Design and Emily Andrews, Executive Director of USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter Judges Comments: She does so much for the community outside of what she does at work and clearly stands out for her amazing efforts.
Education Awardee: Southwestern Illinois College Southwestern Illinois College s sustainability efforts fall into five program areas: green curriculum, green campuses, green communities, green collaborations, and green careers. SWIC runs its facilities and operations in ways that minimize environmental impact while reducing costs and is seeking LEED Gold certification for their Liberal Arts Building Addition. Michael Smith, Southwestern Illinois Community College and Emily Andrews, USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter Judges Comments: They have a major influence on individuals in the built environment, but beyond that, they impact the community by developing programs that really get the information out there.
Operational Excellence Awardee: Parkway School District Erik Lueders, Parkway School District and Emily Andrews, USGBC- Missouri Gateway Chapter Though Parkway School District was recognized at the first Growing Green Awards in the Education Category, 2012 brought remarkable accomplishments in the district s operations. Last year, Parkway enacted single stream recycling and composting programs that together contributed to 960 tons of materials diverted from landfills and oversaw a 1.2 million kilowatt hour reduction in electricity use. By modeling sustainable actions, Parkway is encouraging habits that will last a lifetime through their students. Judges Comments: The work they are able to complete and how they affect the community through their students and staff is especially impressive. I am very excited to share their accomplishments with others to try to implement their ideas elsewhere.
Restoration Awardee: Patty Maher, Tiger Lily Development Patty Maher and her company are committed to preserving historical properties by applying Missouri Historic Preservation and ENERGY STAR standards. Restoring former shells into livable homes with quality craftsmanship not only contributes to the ongoing revitalization of vibrant neighborhoods, it also ensures that these homes longevity will measured in centuries not decades. Patty Maher of Tiger Lily Development (center, holding awards plaque) with her guests Judges Comments: The work they do is remarkable. I was impressed with their holistic approach to their restoration work.
Innovation Honorable Mention: Cannon Design for evap Chiller Series Cannon Design received an Honorable Mention in the Innovation Category for the development of the evap Chiller Series, which solves a centuries-old problem of how laboratories can cool equipment for experiments. The evap utilizes the existing building's chilled water or process water system to reject the heat from the laboratory equipment, creating safer and energy efficient laboratories every day. Judges Comments: This device will completely change the lab design approach. evap Chiller by Cannon Design
Innovation Awardee: SWT Design Emily Andrews, USGBC-Missouri GateayChapter with SWT Design s Ted Spaid, Hunter Beckham, Jim Wolterman, and Brock Piglia For more than 15 years SWT Design has continually sought after and implemented innovative technologies to solve complex design problems. Most recently, SWT Design team members have played an integral role in the advancement and adaptation of the Sustainable SITES Initiative rating system. Not only have they worked on two of the 15 SITES certified projects in the world, both were pilot projects and one is their own campus. They now contribute measurable evidence from these projects as leading examples for both the St. Louis region and beyond. Judges Comments: Their commitment to the environment through their involvement inthe Sustainable SITES Initiative is paramount.
Community Champion Awardee: Old North St. Louis Restoration Group Sean Thomas, Old North St. Louis Restoration Group Old North St Louis Restoration Group has been referred to as one of the country s best revitalization stories and the very antithesis of sprawl. Old North recognizes that community is more than a collection of buildings and sustainability is more than the built environment and has developed programming and activities to cultivate relationships among long-time residents and newcomers to the neighborhood. Through their community spirit and leadership, Old North is creating a diverse, vibrant and sustainable community that serves as an example of how true sustainability is conceived and practiced. Judges Comments: The work they do is above and beyond what is the industry standard. Their commitment to the community and sustainability should be commended.
