6 +++ President s*monthly*message*2*a*letter*from* the*gcfm*president,*betty*sanders:* It's+March,+when+the+Boston+Flower+Show+gives+us+so+many+ideas+and+when+ Mother+Nature+sometimes+slaps+us+back+to+reality.+But+here's+the+good+news,+ walking+in+wetlands+on+my+property,+i+found+the+skunk+cabbage+had+emerged.+ Not+edible+(for+us),+only+sorta+pretty,+very+stinky+but+positive+proof+that+ spring+is+on+its+way.+while+we+wait,+i'm+going+to+tell+you+about+upcoming+ events+and+then+some+more+of+the+things+i've+learned+from+the+club+surveys+ many+of+you+hilled+out+and+sent+to+me Another+sure+sign+that+spring+is+on+its+way+is+the+Civic+Development+ workshop+on+thursday,+march+30.+we'll+have+kerry+mendez+helping+us+hind+ the+right+plants+for+the+very+worst+conditionsqtoo+sunny,+too+shady,+too+wet,+ too+dry+and+buried+under+saltqladen+snow,+in+other+words,+your+average+ roadside+site.+sign+up+soon,+attendance+is+limited,+and+the+registration+form+is+ attached+below On+Thursday,+April+6,+Garden+Study+School+springs+up+at+Tower+Hill,+ offering+the+perfect+way+to+gear+up+for+gardening+season.+there+is+always+ something+new+to+learn;+even+established+gardeners+will+hind+they+get+better+ with+a+little+learning.+go+on+the+website+gcfm.org+and+check+under+ 'Education',+then+'Schools'+for+more+information+and+the+registration+form April+is+the+month+of+District+meetings.+This+is+where+all+the+clubs+in+a+ district+can+connect+and+crossqpollinate+(well,+we+are+gardeners!)+each+club+ does+things+somewhat+differently+and+there+is+much+to+be+learned+from+our+ neighbors.+so+sign+up+when+your+district+director+sends+out+the+information+ for+you+to+learn+from+the+speakers+and+a+chance+to+share+what+you+do.+at+the+ meetings+talk+to+the+state+ofhicers,+me,+and+especially+our+incoming+president+ Suzanne+McCance.+We+can+do+more+for+you+when+you+tell+us+what+you+need+ and+want.+finally,+remember+that+all+garden+club+members+(not+just+ofhicers)+ are+encouraged+to+come+take+part And+April+is+also+when+each+club+can+send+two+(and+only+twoQHire+codes+are+ enforced)+members+to+the+speaker's+workshops.+every+year+we+offer+new+ topics,+new+speakers+and+chances+to+reconnect+with+speakers+you've+seen+in+ the+past.+sign+up+soon+to+get+your+choice+of+date+april12+(wellesley)+and+april+ 18+(Tower+Hill)+so+you+can+amaze+your+club+with+whom+you+Hind+to+educate+ and+entertain+the+club+next+year.+

7 Now,+about+those+surveysQQQwow+you+do+a+lot+of+things!+ I+have+been+astounded+by+the+breadth+of+activities+of+Massachusetts'+clubs.+ You+give+out+scholarships+to+strangers+for+college+and+to+your+own+members+ to+attend+the+gcfm+schools.+you+tell+me+you+are+not+a+hloral+design+club+but+ you+hold+an+'art+in+bloom'+or+'books+in+bloom'+annually.+if+that+doesn't+give+ you+one+foot+in+the+hloral+design+world,+what+does?+you+write+that+you+are+not+ a+horticulture+club,+but+you+take+trips+to+garden+in+the+woods+(ne+wildhlower+ Society),+Tower+Hill+Botanical+Garden+or+Arnold+Arboretum.+I+have+news+for+ you:+you've+got+horticulture+in+your+club+dna.+you+tell+me+you+do+not+have+a+ children's+program,+but+each+year+you+plant+trees+with+your+town's+entire+ second+or+third+grade+students.+those+activities,+dear+readers,+mean+you're+ kneeqdeep+in+junior+hort.+++you+maintain+gardens+at+schools+and+nursing+ homes,+along+your+town's+streets+and+at+historic+sites,+at+audubon+sanctuaries+ and+churches.+you+are+a+credit+to+your+community,+and+you+should+take+ justihiable+pride+in+everything+you+do You+should+also+toot+your+own+horn.+When+you+celebrate+Arbor+Day+with+ children,+let+the+local+paper+know+a+week+in+advance.+if+they+don't+cover+it,+ send+them+a+photo+and+a+story+about+what+happened+and+how+long+you've+ been+doing+it.+(remember+you+will+need+parent's+permission+to+include+ identihiable+children+in+any+photograph.)+one+club+creates+short+gardening+ videos+that+are+run+on+the+local+cable+tv+station+promoting+good+gardening+ practicesqand+incidentally,+the+garden+club.+as+you+plant+your+civic+gardens,+ make+certain+you+have+signs+indicating+that+it+is+a+garden+club+(not+town+ employees)+is+at+work.+(low+cost+"garden+club+at+work"+signs+will+be+ available+for+purchase+at+the+district+meetings+and+the+june+annual+meeting.)+ If+you+have+an+art+in+bloom+or+books+in+bloom+in+a+library+or+other+public+ building,+make+certain+you+also+have+the+garden+club's+membership+hlyer+ nearby.+some+clubs+have+created+bookmarks+to+be+given+away+at+libraries+with+ a+listing+of+the+club's+programs+with+dates+and+locations Great+ideas+and+great+garden+clubs+should+be+shared.+ ++ Betty+Sanders+ President+ Garden+Club+Federation+of+Massachusetts+
