Courses likely to be added include an orchid course & lecture, a wine course, sustainable gardening and integrated pest management. Where it says ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED, please see: for more information. COURSES 1. ESPALIER Course Details: Espalier is a pruning technique of training fruit trees into interesting shapes. Tony Maniezzo will discuss the cultural requirements, how to get started and how the trees are trained and pruned. Class Size: 15 Max. WREATH MAKING Course Description: Guided by the talented and experienced experts Moya Drummond and Judy Newton, you will learn tips and techniques while making your very own natural holiday creation. Welcome your friends and relatives with a beautiful hand-made wreath on your door this holiday season. Class Size: 25 Max. Instructors: Moya Drummond and Judy Newton Date: Saturday December 2/06 Time: 2 separate classes (9am-12pm, 1-4pm) Cost (General): $60.00 Cost (Garden Members): $ IMPROVING YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY FOR FREE (Almost) Course Description: This class is for novice photographers with little or no prior knowledge of the rules of photographic composition. The class will feature tips and techniques for improving or transforming your photography with little or no extra investment. Composition, subject selection and light will be examined. Be prepared for outside weather. Camera not required for this class (UBC will supply items required for outside teaching). Class Size: 8 Max. 3 5. STARTING AN ON-LINE GARDENING OR NATURE JOURNAL Course Description: Interested in starting an online journal about your garden or nature observations (or both). Join Daniel Mosquin as he demonstrates how you can use free services on the web to share your writing and photographs about your garden or natural spaces. Daniel will also discuss some of the issues to consider, such as copyright and privacy. Some familiarity with the web is expected. Class Size: 20 Max. 4 7. CONTAINER GARDEN/SMALL SPACES Course Description: Small gardens are a challenge, but with the right choice of plants, they can bring much joy. In this course, you will learn about suitable plants for a small garden, including trees and shrubs! Special attention will be paid to plants that provide interest in all seasons and plants that do well in containers. Instructor: Judy Newton Date: Saturday March 31/07 8. PLANTSMANSHIP: GROWING INTERESTING PLANTS AND LEARNING MORE ABOUT THEM Description: Topics covered will be: origins of garden plants, plant explorers, great plant collections of the world, choosing plants for historical and botanical interest, becoming a plant connoisseur. BOTANY FOR GARDENERS Description: Topics to be covered: plant names and botanical Latin, plant structure, how an understanding of plant ecology can save work in the garden, simple plant physiology - the scientific basis of frost and drought tolerance, flowering and pruning. Instructor: Quentin Cronk Date: TBA Location: TBA 10. HERBARIUM COURSE Course Description: Learn about the history and significance of herbariums, namely the UBC Herbarium. Enjoy a workshop and demonstration on the process of creating a herbarium mount. Participants will create at-least 2 beautifully preserved and mounted UBC Botanical Garden plants. Each participant can enjoy the experience of making a contribution to plant research by donating one mount to the UBC Herbarium, while additional mounts can be taken home and utilized as a decoration, gift or the beginning of a personal plant collection. 8 SEMINARS 1. THE NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDENS Details: Marc Hachadourian, curator of glasshouse collections, will provide an overview of the New York Botanical Garden facilities and collections. PLANTS, GARDENS AND NATURAL AREAS OF SOUTHWESTERN USA Description: In spring of 2006, Daniel traveled for four weeks through the Southwest USA. This seminar will feature a selection of his photographs from Arizona, New Mexico, California and Oregon, complete with commentary. Speaker: Daniel Mosquin Date: Tuesday November 7/06 Cost Free

Garden Halloween Day Date: Sunday October 29/06 Time: 1-4pm Description: A Halloween Day for the whole family. Parents can help lead their children through a series of clues on our exciting Halloween themed Garden scavenger hunt. The stations in the scavenger hunt will involve a series interesting plants with unique Halloween information. After completing the scavenger hunt parents and children can return to the Garden Reception Centre for a demonstration table of weird and unusual indoor plants; a cash only carnivorous plant sale (Venus Fly Traps, Pitcher Plants, Nepenthes & Sundews); an array of interesting crafts plus a small gift.
