3 grc the strength behind the brand GRC explained Glassfibre Reinforced Concrete is the generic term for a high-strength composite stone made with cement mortar (primarily a mixture of cement and sand) reinforced with bundled strands of glassfibre filaments. Un-reinforced concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension. This is why reinforcement is added. Precast concrete is typically reinforced with steel, but precast concrete products are heavy because of their overall thickness. With GRC, the glassfibre strands in the mortar (3-5% by weight depending on the process) greatly increase product strength while dramatically reducing product weight because of the much thinner but stronger wall sections. GRC products can be formed as thin as 6 mm (1/4 inch) so their weight is typically only 20-25% of the weight of traditional precast concrete products. This lightweight feature of GRC also makes it safer and easier to handle on site, and reduces loads on structures when installed. glassfibrereinforcedconcrete

4 grc glassfibrereinforcedconcrete The advantages and benefits of GRC Mouldable Colour Impact resistant Weather-proof Water resistant Chemical resistant Fire resistant Environmentally friendly GRC combines the high strength of glassfibre with the rigidity of concrete. The resulting composite is a tough, rigid material that has a strength-to-weight ratio superior to most other commonly-used building products. Other advantages and benefits of GRC include: GRC can be moulded to accurately reproduce almost any small or large shape (eg. curves, patterns, reliefs, etc). GRC products can be manufactured using different cements (eg. white, off-white, grey) that can be coloured with mineral oxides. GRC products are highly durable. They will not shatter upon impact, and any localized damage can usually be repaired. GRC will not rust or rot, needs no painting and because it contains no steel it will not corrode or spall. GRC does not suffer from traditional concrete cancers. GRC is virtually impermeable to water thus making it ideal for products such as planters and water-features. Usually no additional waterproofing is required. The high density and high cement content of GRC give a higher chemical resistance than other cement based materials. GRC does not burn or emit smoke when exposed to fire. This gives architects and designers greater flexibility in specifying components to satisfy fire performance requirements. The main constituents of GRC are based on the naturally occurring earth oxides that are used in the manufacture of cement and glassfibres. These are not generally regarded as pollutants. The reduced weight of GRC compared to steel reinforced concrete products provides environmental benefits. An assessment carried out as part of a UK government-detr/ Concrete Industry Alliance Partners in Technology project compared two precast concrete and GRC products that fulfil the same function. The results show that GRC has a lower environmental impact (around 40% less). Peter Fudge has been designing gardens for over 20 years and the trueform collection reflects Peter s strong passion for simple lines that complement the surrounding landscape and architecture. Peter s design philosophy is inspired by four main design principles balance, continuity, restraint and architecture. At the core of these principles are the owners of the garden, their lifestyle, appreciation and enthusiasm to create a space unique to their personal needs. The trueform planter collection includes bowls and round and square tapered pots. The same design theme unites the collection sharply defined vertical and horizontal corner edges, and a wide top rim that returns down to form the planter recess. 24 facetangle gem Gem planter and seat range - facet angle Inspired by the facets of a cut gemstone, the GEM planter and seat exemplify the versatility of product design and manufacture in GRC (glassfibre reinforced concrete). GEM was designed by Forrest Gillham of Street & Garden Furniture Co. in collaboration with Quatro Design. One feature of GEM is that it works on both sloping and level surfaces. The planter is made in two parts that can be joined in different configurations to alter the planter profile. Thus, the planter rim can be leveled on a sloping surface, or angled to create a sloping effect on a level surface. The GEM seat is the bottom section of the planter turned upside down. It can similarly be rotated and leveled on sloping surfaces. GEM planters and seats are available with a smooth stone finish in raw concrete or with integrated oxide colours. 26 liquidserenity water-features An effective water-feature can be as easy as a Zen bowl with pebbles and waterplants, or simply install one of our waterfeature packages for fast and easy set-up. For something unique you can construct your own water-feature using Quatro bowl, plinth and square pond components. Our extensive range of shallow and deep bowls, shallow troughs and reflection ponds, are ideal for creating individualized waterfeatures. And because they re made of GRC, Quatro water-features don t require additional sealing to make them waterproof. Also, at Quatro Design we can modify standard products to incorporate special features. For example, we can cast spillways into the rim of Zen bowls so that water cascades from one bowl into another. 29 Quatro Planter Options & Accessories Drainage Regulator Riser Water dripping from drainage holes in planters can be unsightly, and can leave stains on the surrounding paving. Quatro s drainage regulator riser controls this dripping so that under normal watering conditions no water will drip from the planter. options The PVC drainage regulator riser is glue-fixed over the drainage hole in the planter forming a water-tight seal. Water can drain from the planter only if the water-level reaches the height of the T-piece of the riser. This will occur only after heavy rain, or if the plants are continually being over-watered. Under normal watering conditions any water that reaches the bottom of the planter will be retained within the planter and drawn up by the plants. The drainage regulator riser is available in three different heights (50mm, 75mm and 100mm). The T-piece at the top is wrapped in geofabric to prevent soil/potting mix from dripping out with any excess water. Quatro s Drainage Regulator Riser is a simple, effective and low-cost solution to controlling dripping from pots and planters. It also does away with the need for saucers and trays under planters. Inquire about adding this option to your planters when ordering. Planter Feet Height Options Quatro s square and rectangular planters come standard with 10mm feet. Most planters are available with higher feet options at 25mm, 50mm and 75mm. Depending on the planter size and type, the feet will be cast into the floor or may be glue-fixed later. They are typically located 50mm in from the bottom edge. You can specify the required feet height of planters when ordering. coloursaccessories

30 options coloursaccessories Quatro Planter Options & Accessories Castor Wheels In some applications planters need to be moved from time to time. Many of Quatro s small to medium-sized square and rectangular planters can be fitted with castor wheels to make this a simple and easy task. Castors can be fastened directly to the base of the planter, or they can be recessed to minimise the visual impact. Castors can also include brakes to ensure the planter doesn t move when in its required position. The size and weight rating of castors will vary depending on the planter. Contact us to discuss this option further. Q-Core Civic describes the larger square and rectangular planters manufactured by Quatro Design. Civic planters have Quatro s Q-Core reinforcement system in their walls to enhance panel strength and stiffness while keeping weight to a minimum. Q-Core is a GRChoneycomb composite where a lightweight reinforcing core is sandwiched between two layers of GRC. Honeycomb reinforcement is typically used in boat-building and aviation where lightness and strength are essential. Quatro Design has now incorporated this technology into GRC planter manufacture.
