1 NJ Top Ten Beaches Rain Barrel Project 2014 The New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium and Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program are teaming up for the 2014 New Jersey Top Ten Beaches Rain Barrel Project. The overall goal is to help the environment by having artists beautify rain barrels that help save water and reduce rain water from entering the storm drain system, thereby preventing flooding and pollution from entering New Jersey s waters. By engaging local artists, the project will help make rain barrels more appealing to the general public while bringing local art to a wider audience. The project will also celebrate coastal New Jersey and tourism by having the art focus on iconic images of the Jersey Shore. A rain barrel is a 55-gallon recycled food-grade container that is placed at the downspout of a roof to collect rainwater. The rain barrels help the environment by reducing the amount of rain that flows into storm drain systems, which helps prevent flooding and cuts down on pollution entering New Jersey s waters. Collected rainwater can be used to water gardens and for other household tasks. Through the partnership agreement between the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium and the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program, ten rain barrels have been donated for the 2014 Top Ten Beaches Rain Barrel Art Project, which will feature iconic coastal, beach, bay, ocean and boardwalk scenes and images celebrating the Jersey Shore. The New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium s 2014 Top Ten Beaches Rain Barrel Art Project will be showcased at the NJSGC 12th Annual State of the Shore Media Event on May 22, The painted barrels will then roll out on tour around the state throughout the summer and be displayed at selected New Jersey beach communities and special events. This unique program promotes environmental awareness and stewardship of all our coastal and water resources. Interested artists need to fill out an application and include a rough sketch of their intended painting, and a sample of their artwork. Artists will be provided with a rain barrel and primer for the barrel. The artists work will be acknowledged on all marketing materials, project website and in press releases. Selected artists will receive a stipend for their participation. This project will contribute greatly to the public s understanding of New Jersey s need for water conservation while furthering the art community s creative reach

Pick up barrel and hand in biography by appointment only Between February Return barrel back to NJ Sea Grant Consortium by appointment only, by April 25, 2014 Barrels will be displayed at The NJSGC State of the Shore Media Event May 22, 2014 (1) A submission of a draft design with an explanation (2) Upon picking up barrel submit artist biography, for publicity purposes. Please provide us with a sketch of what you intend to paint. The proposed art must be original and intended for a family audience. This is only intended to be a rough draft that can be altered, but you must maintain the project s theme. Use the reverse side if you need more space or send your design file as an attachment. Please write a short description of your piece. NOTE: Your design must feature iconic images of the New Jersey Shore and beaches

4 Contract *Barrels can be transported in the back seat of most four - door vehicles or a reclined front passenger seat of a two - door vehicle. 1) Artists must abide by the timeline outlined on Page 3 of this application: 2) Barrel Design and Painting: Designs must be approved by a panel of representatives from The Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program, the NJ Sea Grant Consortium, and the Monmouth County Art Council, before they can be picked up. Design concepts must be sketched on the Artist Application and submitted to Norma Wokas at normawokas@comcast.net. As barrels are plastic, they must be primed prior to painting. Artists will be provided with a 12 ounces can of a plastic spray paint primer at the time of pick up. Painting materials are the responsibility of the artist. 3) Program and Artist Promotion: Artists must agree to have their completed barrels on display at local venues accompanied with brochures that will explain the benefits of rain barrels. Signs will be placed with the barrels, which will include the artist s name, and their interpretation of their design. Photos of the finished barrels and the artists biographies will be displayed on the njseagrant.org website and the njtoptenbeaches.org web sites. 4) Additional Terms: The artist relinquishes ownership of his/her artwork upon delivery of the finished barrel to the drop off location. The project partners are not liable for any damage to the barrel during its storage or display period.
