1 CALL LETTER: The Garden Club of Indiana, Inc., Southeast District invites you to its 'The Art of Gardening' on Wednesday, September 6, 2017, at Creekside Retreat in Nashville, Indiana. This day of learning and fun will begin with registration at 8:35 a.m. Enjoy some light pastries, juice and coffee provided by Give un Take Garden Club. Be ready at 9:07 a.m. for the opening and first presentation by one of the four fabulous speakers presenting programs for the day. Lunch will be provided by Papa's Deli from Columbus, IN and is included in your registration fee. The day will conclude around 3:45 p.m. after announcement of raffle drawing winners and results of the floral design competition. Registration is only $30 for the entire day for you early bird garden club members and just a wee bit more for non-members and those who cannot commit until later. For those who wish to stay overnight prior to the meeting, a block of rooms has been reserved at Creekside Retreat. Located on State Road 46 just 14 miles west of I-65 and Columbus, this property has recently been converted from an apartment complex to an updated and extremely lovely conference center and retreat location with a cozy feel. You will find unique touches, such as the Brown County stone used throughout and Brown County art hanging in the hallways and rooms. For those and all who will be arriving on Tuesday, September 5, dinner will be on your own. Then everyone is invited to join us out on the patio for an old-fashioned campfire with s'mores and perhaps even a sing-along. Ghost stories are optional! As hinted at above, a small floral design competition will add color and variety to our tables and give attendees a chance to exhibit their creativity. CASH prizes will be awarded for the top winners and a People's Choice Award will be voted on by attendees. Space is limited and the first registrations received will be accepted, so check out the guidelines given and enter soon.

2 SPEAKERS AND PROGRAMS: The Art of the Native Home Landscape - David Gorden, ASLA Description: Not every property is conducive to the creation of a prairie or natural woodland. There either isn't the space, the appropriate setting or the aesthetic inclination to have plantings that look too "natural" or in some cases "wild". This discussion will consider how to incorporate native plants into your "un-natural" setting. Speaker bio: David Gorden is a landscape Architect with Mark M. Holeman, Inc. in Indianapolis where he has been designing landscapes for over 25 years. A graduate of the University of Illinois, he is a past president of the Indianapolis Museum of Art Horticultural Society and the Indiana Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. A soldier in the battle against invasive plants, he serves of the Indiana Invasive Plant Advisory Committee and board of the Midwest Invasive Plant Network. The Art of Container Gardening - Sharon Sorenson Description: Laugh along with this humerously entertaining speaker while learning to create spectacular, colorful container gardens that have the added benefit of attracting hummingbirds, butterflies, and other entrancing pollinators to your garden. Speaker bio: Sharon Sorenson is a humorist, birding expert, and author of Birds in the Yard, a Month by Month Guide. Sharon has had extensive speaking experience in 48 of the 50 states. She speaks on a variety of topics and combines an incredible knowledge base with wit and humor. Her research and observational powers are keen, and the photography she presents is amazing. 3 SPEAKERS AND PROGRAMS (Continued): The Art of the Garden - Jeff Ludlow Description: In January 2014, by random chance Jeff attended Joel Karsten's Straw Bale Gardening presentation at the Indianapolis Flower and Garden Show. Everything about it made sense to him and he was hooked. He went home, bought his book and his first two bales. After 4 years of Straw Bale Gardening Jeff continues to be a huge fan. Speaker bio: Jeff Ludlow received a B.S. in Agronomy from Purdue University and a Master of Science in Plant Breeding from Minnesota University. He spent 23 years in soybean research followed by 16 years in hybrid seed corn licensing. He became a Certified Straw Bale Gardening Instructor in March The Art of the Design - Bobby Eldridge, AIFD Description: Bobby is known for his funky, fun, and fresh floral designs. You will find some new, and non-traditional thoughts about floral design and perhaps take away some fresh ideas which you can then use in either your home bouquets, or your own application in competition for flower shows, county fairs, or other settings. Speaker bio: Bobby is a member of the American Institute of Floral Designers and is active in the floral design industry. His engaging personality, his broad base of knowledge in the floral design field and his interesting experiences working on some 'big projects', such as with the Kentucky Derby and the Rose Bowl Parade float assembly, inspired us to bring this fascinating man to present to our attendees.

4 THE ARTISTIC DESIGN COMPETITION: All floral design entries MUST be registered with Sharon Baldwin by OR by calling Class I. The Art of Design. A design in the style of a table centerpiece, incorporating at last 2 artistic 'tools'. a. Amateur category* b. NGC accredited judge category Class II. An Artistic Touch. A creative design incorporating at least two artistic 'tools'. a. Amateur category* B. NGC accredited judge category Rules: 1. Design must be the work of the exhibitor, although the plant materials need not have been grown by the exhibitor. 2. Fresh plant materials may never be treated. Dry materials may be used. 3. Artificial plant materials are not permitted. 4. Designs will be staged as follows: Class I will be used as actual centerpieces placed on the dining tables (8-top round tables). Class II will be staged around the perimeter of the room on standard conference tables (each Class II exhibit space is 30" wide by 30" deep). 5. All tables will be provided with beige tablecloths. 6. Underlayments (provided by the designer) are permissible in both Classes. In addition, background (provided by the designer) may be used in Class II. 7. Entries MUST be registered with Sharon Baldwin as described above. The total number of entries is limited to twelve in Class I and twelve in Class II. 8. Designs will be received from 8:00 a.m. - 8:45 a.m. and must remain until the conclusion of the day's events. * Open to anyone not accredited as a flower show judge
