Why a Supplement to the CDC Video? Something is Still Bugging Us! Update outdated 2005 information on CDC video Provide Township / County information Provide simple, more environmentally safe THINGS YOU CAN DO to prevent Mosquito breeding and West Nile Virus

Update 2005 CDC Video Info Safe Use of Mosquito repellents intended for application to skin and clothing: DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide) is still a good option New Picaridin (KBR 3023) instructions - can now be used on skin in addition to clothing Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus [active ingredient: p- menthane 3,8-diol (PMD)] a new effective option Still need to apply all personal repellents with care See CDC for more information ( ect_repellent.htm)

Counties Important Roll in WNV Prevention Testing and decisions on mosquito control - with state Health/Environmental Agency coordination Local monitoring of mosquito population and testing for the presence of WNV in mosquitoes and birds Placing non-toxic Bti dunks in standing water locations (e.g., sewer basins that don t drain) Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) is a naturally occurring bacterium harmless to humans and pets Applying pesticide when WNV positive testing indicates high risk See Delco Dept of Intercommunity Health See Delco Dept. of Intercommunity Health ( estnile.html)

Testing Birds a WNV Carrier DEP coordinates the collection of dead bird specimens for possible testing. As of 2013, only testing: Crows or Ravens Blue Jays Birds of Prey Owls, Hawks, Eagles, etc. Currently no lack of birds for testing, but if you find one of these dead birds, you can report at: pa Delaware County Intercommunity Health Coord

Why Earth Friendly Mosquito & WNV Prevention? Pesticides id are less harmful than they used to be, but they still have health risk to humans and to beneficial insects and wildlife Two earth friendly strategies to reduce mosquitoes are effective, safer and should always be applied first: Remove standing water and other conditions that promote mosquito growth Apply Bti dunks to prevent the growth of mosquito larvae to standing water which cannot be practically eliminated

Stop Breeding Mosquitoes 1. Empty water from all containers around your house including birdbaths and pet water dishes at least every trash day. If you use saucers under flowerpots empty them or fill them with sand. Bird Bath

Stop Breeding Mosquitoes 2. Don t let water pool in open garbage cans, overturned covers, toys or other materials left outdoors. Recycle, destroy, flatten or dispose of tin cans or any other artificial water containers. All Kinds of Stuff May Get Left Outside

Stop Breeding Mosquitoes 3. Remove sheets of plastic (tarps, plastic mulch) which breed mosquitoes by puddling water. Tarps and Landscape Plastic

Stop Breeding Mosquitoes 4. Keep gutters free of debris & grade soil at outlets so water drains from gutters, away from home Clogged Drain Improper Pitch

Eliminate Non-Draining Dead End Gutters Roofers Must cut/re-pitch from both sides to mid-point drains. Homeowners If stuck with it, could fill with light Perlite concrete Concrete made with Perlite instead of sand/stone - same weight as water Leveled off no standing water

Stop Breeding Mosquitoes 5. Eliminate water in old tires bring to tire shop or drill drain holes. 6. Keep grass clippings out of the street. Grass in storm sewers provides a perfect WNV breeding ground.. No Tires, No Grass Clippings in the Street

Stop Breeding Mosquitoes 7. Remove litter where water puddles and mosquitoes can breed in a pool as little as a bottle cap. Litter catches water, breeds mosquitoes

Stop Breeding Mosquitoes 8. Remove floating debris from ponds to reduce egg laying sites. 9. Stock ornamental pools with fish or aerate it to prevent mosquito breeding... Ornamental Fish Pond Floating Debris on Pond

Stop Breeding Mosquitoes 10. Report wet land with water that never drains to local authority - possibly stock with native predacious fish or frogs, OR 11. Place Bti Dunks" - available at hardware stores, targets mosquito & black fly larvae... Bti Dunks

Stop Breeding Mosquitoes 12. Fill removed tree holes with soil or grade to drain and fill holes in trees so water can not accumulate. Fill Tree Holes with Sand or Concrete

Stop Breeding Mosquitoes 13. Eliminate construction puddles, seepage pools, lawn or landscaping depressions that persist for more than a couple of days by draining or filling in area. Grade Ruts, Depressions to Drain

Stop Breeding Mosquitoes 14. Grade newly developed land. 15. Drain irrigation water away from premises, or collect in storage sump & reuse the water. 16. Check irrigation/drainage g ditches for leaks, seepage & maintain a free flow of water..

Stop Breeding Mosquitoes 17. Check pool tarps and Jacuzzi covers and drain collected rain water. Stagnant Water on a Pool Cover Can Become a Mosquito Factory

Stop Breeding Mosquitoes 18. Maintain swimming pools chlorinate even in cooler months; filter operating May to October, the typical mosquito life cycle. Well Maintained i Swimming i Pools Avoids Mosquito Hazards

If We Eliminate This: We also Eliminate i This:

Keep from Getting Bit 19. Keep window screens in place and in good repair. Fix Holes in Screens

Keep from Getting Bit 20. Wear long sleeves and pants, avoid dark colors. 21. Tuck shirts into pants and pants into socks. 22. Use mosquito nets in high mosquito areas to protect hands, head, and neck, as well as, infant carriages and strollers. 23 St i d t i t d l 23. Stay indoors at sunrise, sunset and early evening when mosquitoes are most active,

Keep from Getting Bit 24. Use yellow "bug" lights outdoors - attract fewer mosquitoes (but are NOT repellents). 25. Carefully use insect repellent effective for mosquitoes on skin and clothing: DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide) N l id is still a good option New Picaridin (KBR 3023) instructions - can now be used on skin in addition to clothing Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus [active ingredient: p- menthane 38-diol 3,8 (PMD)] a new effective option Apply with care. See CDC for more information ( ct_repellent.htm)

Report Persistent Potential Health Hazards from Standing Water Like: Water and leaf debris on pool covers, Discarded tires, Buildup of Trash and Debris, Land that remains wet even in dry weather this may be a candidate for Bti Dunk treatment In Haverford, call In Haverford, call and ask for Department of Public Health

Find these and other Earth Friendly Tips on the Haverford Township EAC Webpage and select Township Departments, Community Development and Environmental Advisory Committee Also see: Delco Dept. of Intercommunity Health PA WNV Control Program state pa html
