3 San Gabriel Valley Cactus and Succulent Society Presentation for Thursday, April 12, 2018 Meeting Rob Skillin: Kenya I have been growing cacti and succulents for 40 years, and have been involved in various local societies for most of that time. The first office I held was Show and Sale Chairman for the Santa Barbara C&SS, during the late 1980 s. After moving to California s Central Valley, I became a founding member, and later, president of the Bakersfield C&SS. In 2005, after another move, I was a founder of the Central Coast C&SS and became its first president. This society now boasts 300+ enthusiastic members, and held its very successful eleventh annual show and sale in May of I have also been involved with the CSSA as a member of its Board of Directors. My first interest, which continues today, was cacti of the Chihuahuan desert, especially those unique genera such as Ariocarpus, Aztekium, and Strombocactus, etc. Gradually, I diversified my collection to include Mesembs, Haworthias, and other succulents, particularly caudiciforms. I ve spent many years studying the cacti of the US, particularly Sclerocacti and Pediocacti. I am an avid grower of plants from seed, and now have a number of seed-grown specimens in my collection dating back to As an acknowledgment of my expertise with these plants, I have been asked to judge numerous shows throughout California, including the CSSA, Intercity, NORCAL, LA, Fresno and San Diego shows. Along with my interest in cacti and succulents, I enjoy photography and travel. These interests have come together in a wonderful way during my botanical explorations of the western US and Mexico, and portions of South America, Africa, Madagascar and the Middle East. I have several programs based on these trips, and I speak regularly to clubs in northern and southern California. Many of my photographs have been published as illustrations for articles and covers of the Journal and Haseltonia, as well as the Timber Press Book of Succulents of the World. 5 San Gabriel Valley Cactus and Succulent Society Cactus of the Month April 2018 Minatures Tom Glavich This month the Cactus of the Month are miniatures. Miniatures are defined differently for different shows. In most cases, the definition is a mature plant in a pot with an inside diameter less than three inches. Some shows define the miniature category as any plant displayed as a miniature. This allows seedlings and young plants to be entered as miniatures. Others require the plant to be the smallest in a genus. We ll use the broad definition for the Plant of the Month: The inside dimension must be less than three inches, but anything else is allowed. The miniature category is one of the most popular in our shows with the number of entrants often one of the largest. The key to success is staging plants. Particular attention must be paid to the relation of the plant to the pot, the top dressing, and any rocks. The importance of color, geometry, and texture are all magnified in the smaller scale of miniatures. Succulents entered as miniatures include representatives from almost every family, and a list would be far too long to print. Unusual entries often do well. With care, species that normally grow large can be kept small, by controlling root development. Even though small, miniatures need a little fertilizer to keep top growth looking fresh and frequent watering, since there is little storage either in the pot or the body of the body of the plant. 6 San Gabriel Valley Cactus and Succulent Society Cactus of the Month April 2018 Tom Glavich Some Cacti suitable as miniatures: Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus - the classic entry Aztekium (both species) Blossfeldia - a genus of miniature cacti from Brazil Epithelantha micromeris a variable species from Texas and Northern Mexico. Frailea - a genus of small cacti, some of which clump. Geohintonia mexicana Mammillaria saboae (discovered by club member Kitty Sabo!) Mammillaria herrerae Mammillaria hernandezii is a particularly beautiful species from Oaxaca. Pelecyphora aselliformis is another classic from Mexico. Turbinicarpus is another genus of slow growing, small cacti from Mexico. There are many great species in this genus, all small and all worth growing. Many Haworthia fit as do Lithops, Conophytum and many of the other smaller mesembs. Small Crassulaceae also do well. 12 Ganna Walska Lotusland Madame Ganna Walska, a well-known Polish opera singer and socialite, purchased the Montecito, California estate in 1941 and spent the next 43 years creating Lotusland, which is now recognized as one of the ten best gardens in the world. The spectacular collections of exotic plants throughout the 37-acre property are a very personal expression of Walska s penchant for the dramatic, the unexpected, and the whimsical. Lotusland is home to several extraordinary plant collections and around each corner there is the unexpected a surprise of unique garden design and plant species. After her death in 1984, Lotusland became a nonprofit botanic garden and opened to the public in Our educational programs serve the Santa Barbara community and our innovative horticultural practices are shared with botanic gardens and garden-lovers around the world. The information and photo on this page comes from the Lotusland website. 12
