1 N ORTH C OAST H OSTA S OCIETY N E W S L E T T E R June 2016 It s Garden Tour Time Saturday, June 25, 2016 Vice President, Mike Kovach has set up four west side gardens to tour this year followed by a picnic at Tom Rabung s Emerald Forest Nursery. The gardens are: Ralph Zilch in Amherst Diane and Bruce Morris in Westlake Philip DeCarlo in Westlake Larry and Janet Hudak in Valley City We will met at Ralph s at 9:00 AM. It is 25 minutes to the Morris home; then 5 minutes to the DeCarlo stop and about 25 minutes from there to the Hudak s. Mike assumes we will spend about 45 minutes in each yard and then ten minutes from the last stop to the picnic. I have included a link to Mapquest with the disclaimer that I never know if these things work or not. Please feel free to OOOOH and AAAAAh and take pictures if you promise to send some of them to me for the newsletter! As in previous years NCHS will provide the meat and beverages for the picnic. We ask that all attending with last names beginning with A thru K please bring a dessert dish to share. Those names beginning L thru Z please bring a side dish to share. Those attending the picnic MUST bring chairs. Seating is not available at the nursery. 2 We will start our tour in Amherst at the home of Ralph Zilch 198 Elyria Ave., Amherst, OH :00 AM to 9:45 AM Basic Directions: From East I 90W toward Toledo; merge onto Rt. 2 toward OH58. (1.27 mi), Take Middle Ridge exit 10 toward Broadway Ave. (.23 mi) turn left onto Middle Ridge Rd (3.26 mi) stay straight to go onto Elyria Rd. (.58 mi). From South take turnpike to Toledo OH58 exit 140 toward Amherst. (1.14 mi) turn right on Leavitt Rd OH 58. (.84mi) turn left on Middle Ridge. Follow same as above. My gardening started 35 years ago with 30 rose bushes planted out front of my home built in the 1860 s on a 100 x 300 lot with a stream behind. I then bought four non-bearing plum trees that were not to get over 15 feet. Well, now they are 50 feet and drop small purple berries splat on cars in the fall. So started my shade gardening. I have about 600 different hostas and about 1000 total with 32 hydrangeas and 17 Japanese maples. Can t help myself. Gardening became my solitude coming home everyday. Three fourths of my garden is ready with 3 hail storms within 2 week's and a bad leg, it s as ready as it will ever be. 2

Merge onto OH 2 for 13.2 mi take Croker Rd exit 156 toward Bassett Rd. (.37mi) Turn Right onto Crocker Rd County Hwy 118 (1.89 ) Turn right onto Schwartz Rd. There is NO PARKING on Schwartz Rd., at anytime. Please park on Washington Way. (The first side street two houses west of our home). I garden on a half acre suburban lot in Westlake. In the 20+ years that we have lived here I have had to compromise to accommodate our two (now adult) sons' tree house and my husband's fishing boat, as well as numerous bikes, grills, cars, and pets. All of which I have tried to blend into the landscape and hope will not be too obvious when you visit my garden. I must have done a fairly good job of camouflaging the various eyesores as I have taken second place in Westlake's gardening competition - Westlake in Bloom for both shade garden and water feature. Working 30 hours a week leaves me considerably less time than I'd like to work in the yard, consequently I do very little in the front. The back however is my sanctuary where you will find the majority of my hostas and, usually, me. 3

4 Phil DeCarlo 2075 Bradley Road Westlake, OH :05 AM to 11:50 AM DIRECTIONS FROM THE MORRIS HOME (about a mile and half) Go West on Schwartz Rd. toward Washington Way. (.41mi) turn slight left on Hilliard Blvd. (2.0mi) take second right onto Bradley Rd. Home is 1.34 miles on the right. PLEASE PARK IN HIS DRIVEWAY AND TURN AROUND BY THE STREET. Westlake does not allow parking on any major roads. Thanks to Diane Morris who arranged for NCHS to tour Phil DeCarlo s garden. Diane says: He is a five time winner of Westlake in Bloom. His pond made the cover of Westlake Magazine, the city's annual publication to its residents. He is a professional landscaper and owner of DeCarlo Enterprises. He specializes in landscape design and water features. His twin waterfalls empty into an alluring koi pond. His yard truly is his calling card. DIRECTIONS FROM WESTLAKE: The last garden today is that of Larry and Janet Hudak 7261 Center Road Valley City, OH :20 PM to 1: 05 PM Go west on Bradley Rd toward Silveredge Trail. (4.36mi) Bradley becomes Chestnut Ridge. (3.54 mi). Go Straight left onto Avon Belden Rd/OH 83. (8.61 mi) Turn let onto State Rd 303/OH 57. Continue on OH 303. (3.62 to destination). Thank you Hudak s for opening your garden up for us. Larry and Janet Hudak are long term members of NCHS and have success growing their hostas in raised beds as well as in the ground. They have some outstanding specimens in their yard. And on to Tom s.. 4

5 AND FINALLY...THE PICNIC. WE DO LOVE TO EAT Emerald Forest Nursery N. Station Rd Columbia Station, OH About 1:15 PM Tom agreed to host the annual picnic at his place, but be aware there will probably be a hosta there that will just HAVE to go home with you! Directions from Hudak s about 10 minutes Go west on Center Rd (303) toward Station Rd. Take first right onto Station Rd Hwy 23. Follow 5.85 miles to the nursery on the left. Mark your Calendars! 6 Watching Ralph Zilch work at the Memorial Weekend Sale A very special thank you to Andy and Denise Mullins, Diane Morris, Ralph Zilch, Rachel Soucek Felice and Joyce and Jim Spuhler for helping to pull plants on May 25th for the plant sale on May 28. A Message from the President: It will soon be time to add some "pop-up" tours to our list of summer fun! If you would like to have your garden toured by members after our regular tour date, please contact Mike Kovach with the date of your choosing. Please check the club calendar and be sure not to plan it when the club will be doing other things (hosta tailgating, trough making, etc.). If you plan a weekday tour, keep in mind that 6:30-7:00 p.m. is a good starting time that allows most members to travel when there is not too much traffic!
