Harriet and Michael Wright, Glen and Martha Sponholtz, and Pam Stevens are spearheading the project. The Tallahassee Orchid Society met a week early due to a meeting conflict at the agricultural center. Carlos Harriet reported that their most pressing need is for blooming orchids. They will need to have the orchids on the thirteenth in order to pack them and get
2 them to Gainesville for set-up on the fourteenth. She asked that members loaning orchids also provide a list of their orchids and put their name on the bottom of each pot. Harriet estimated that they will need at least 25 to 30 orchids to stage a suitably full display. It was agreed that the committee be allow to spend up to one hundred dollars for small ferns and other small greenery for filler. Larger greenery will be provided at the site. Moving on to our own show, possible dates were considered and conflicts addressed. After some discussion, members agreed on the weekend of April 21 and 22, Following a lively discussion, members agreed on the theme of "Jewels of the Jungle" for the show. The traditional Christmas party/dinner was also discussed. Bob Lindquist graciously offered to host us at his house this year. The date was set as December 8, which would be our normal meeting night. refreshments, including large fresh strawberries and salsa and chips. Maurice Geiger generously provided some large healthy epidendrum radicans to be auctioned off. They are the brilliant red/orange with a yellow lip. There are two more available for our next meeting, so bring your mad money! Last, but not least, we finally did get to our quiz corner; you will want to check out the answer and the next question in the newsletter. QUIZ Jimmy Dean Martin once again did an excellent job of presenting our bloom table, which included several interesting and unusual orchids. Teresa Coates provided an excellent table of CORNER June Question: What is the only grasshopper species that pollinates a flower, and what does it pollinate? The pollinating cricket (Glomeremus orchidopilus) is the only animal that pollinates the endangered orchid Angraecum cadetii on Reunion in the Mascarene Archipelago in the Indian Ocean. It is also the only cricket or grasshopper species that pollinates a flower. November Question: Continuing our interest in insects, what insect hunts its prey exclusively on orchids?
