LOUIS): The Missouri Botanical Garden is seeking design entries for its upcoming TREEmendous Extreme Tree Houses exhibition, planned as part of the Garden s year-long celebration of the U.N. Year of Forests in Local designers, architects, schools, studios and individuals are all welcome to submit a creative tree house design for the juried competition. Winning entries will receive a $5,000 stipend to construct their designs on the Garden grounds as part of the Extreme Tree Houses public exhibition, on display Apr. 30 through Aug. 21, Entries are due in their entirety by Monday, Nov. 15, 2010 at 4 p.m. and attendance at an advance pre-design meeting is required. 2 ADD ONE: Extreme Tree Houses encouraged to ponder the concepts of sustainability, exploration and play in the outdoors, reconnecting children and nature, accessibility, color, natural elements and nature-inspired design, fantasy and habitats as homes. Tree houses can be freestanding or attached to a tree. In order to maintain the permanent health and structural integrity of the Garden s tree collection, designers must adhere to protective installation and construction guidelines. Design entries will be judged on their creativity, imagination, use of sustainable and environmentally-friendly materials, accessibility, level of engagement for visitors of all ages, elements of surprise, durability for weather conditions and heavy usage by children, flexibility of location and ease of installation and removal. Each entry must be accompanied by an artist rendering and a plan view showing scale. Three-dimensional models are encouraged. Winning Extreme Tree Houses will be constructed by their designers in visitor-accessible locations near or under the canopy of significant trees at the Missouri Botanical Garden, including oak, tulip, elm, sweet gum, ginkgo, sycamore, Osage orange and walnut trees. Ten pre-approved installation locations will be shared with potential entrants at a required pre-design meeting. Two pre-design meetings are scheduled, and potential entrants need only attend one: Monday, Sept. 27 at 4:30 p.m. OR Monday, Oct. 18 at 4:30 p.m. Both sessions will be held in the Jordan Education Wing of the Ridgway Visitor Center at the Missouri Botanical Garden, 4344 Shaw Blvd. in south St. Louis. Final design submissions are due Monday, Nov. 15 at 4 p.m. Entrants may either handdeliver submissions to the Garden, dropping them off at the Ridgway Visitor Center between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., or mail them directly to the Missouri Botanical Garden, care of Lynn Kerkemeyer, 4344 Shaw Blvd., St. Louis, MO A $15 non-refundable entry fee made payable to the Missouri Botanical Garden is required upon submission. Winning individuals or teams will receive on-site signage recognition and a $5,000 stipend towards materials and construction of their design - $3,000 to be paid upon announcement of winning designs, and $2,000 to be paid upon conclusion of the exhibition and removal of the structure on deadline. Installation must take place from Apr. 15 through 28, 2011, and structures must be removed from Aug. 22 through 28, Designers are responsible for tree house maintenance throughout the duration of the public exhibition, and may keep their creations upon exhibit s end.
