The courses offer the opportunity to learn alongside RHS horticulturists and experts in their field in the amazing, unique setting of RHS Wisley. Our 2015 programme aims to provide horticultural sessions to suit everyone, whether you are just starting out with a garden or are already confident in your horticultural ability and looking to broaden your skills. We have once again extended our range of Creative courses and workshops to cover lino cutting, screen printing, and Japanese ink painting. For the first time we are also offering cookery courses inspired by apples and edible flowers in association with the wonderful cooks at Taste of Wisley. The Royal Horticultural Society is the UK s leading gardening charity, helping and inspiring millions of people to garden. This talk and demonstration by RHS staff will teach you the theory behind pruning shrubs at this time of year, along with vital pruning principles which will allow your plants to be at their best for the year ahead. General maintenance and pruning shrubs and climbers such as Buddleja, Wisteria and Cornus (dogwood) will be covered, as well as renovative pruning for overgrown shrubs. This session will involve walking outdoors and practical demonstrations, so please come prepared with suitable footwear and clothing. This course will cover all the major rose types including hybrid tea, floribunda, shrub roses and climbers, and demonstrate the correct pruning and planting techniques to allow each one to reach its full potential. 6 HORTICULTURE Greenhouses for Beginners Saturday 28 February 10am to 1pm Whether you have recently acquired, or are thinking of acquiring a greenhouse, or would simply like guidance and ideas on how to get started, this illustrated talk and practical demonstration by Wisley s Glasshouse Specialist Team will set you on the right track. The session will cover different types of greenhouses to suit your needs, useful gizmos and gadgets, setting up the greenhouse for spring, raising plants, growing early crops under protection and growing springflowering plants. This full day course will go through the basics of propagation and show you the best techniques to produce the most successful results. It will include a demonstration of taking cuttings and sowing seeds with opportunities to try the activities and take the results home for further nurturing. There will also be a guided tour around the propagation glasshouses at Wisley where thousands of plants are raised for the garden every year. Let the RHS experts help you through the gardening year providing a whistle-stop tour of techniques, tips, tricks and advice on seasonal tasks so that you know what you could be doing when. March and April will include pricking out, lawn care, propagation, staking, sowing annuals outdoors and pruning for winter stem colour with opportunities to have a go at many of these tasks yourself. The session will include practical activities and a walk outside in the garden, so please come prepared with suitable clothing, footwear and gardening gloves. This day will focus on the vegetables that can be grown during spring and how to sow and plant them. This time of year is often a lean time for harvesting so discussions will also cover crops to plant in your garden this year for a harvest next spring. A range of practical jobs such as soil preparation, seed sowing techniques and intercropping will be covered. 7 HORTICULTURE Starting from Scratch Two-day course: Saturday 14 and Saturday 21 March 10.15am to 4pm If you re new to gardening and are feeling a little overwhelmed this is the course for you. Over two days we will take you back to basics and grow your knowledge from the ground up. Subjects introduced will include; plant naming, growth and structure, planting and plant care, basic propagation, ground cultivation, growing media, pruning, lawn care, feeding and watering. By the end of the course you should have gained a solid base from which to build further knowledge. The course will involve some lecture based sessions and some indoor and outdoor practical sessions, so please come prepared with appropriate clothing, footwear and gardening gloves. If so then come and find out the secrets to keeping a healthy, luscious lawn all year round on this one-day course. Discover how to establish a lawn from scratch with turf or seed, and how to renovate a grass area that is past its best. Yearly maintenance will be covered including feeding, mowing and weeding as well as effective solutions for removing moss. Grass types for different situations will be covered, as will equipment for keeping your lawn smart to set your garden off to its best and be the envy of your neighbours. You will then have the opportunity to plant up a small container to take home, so please come prepared with suitable footwear, clothing and gardening gloves. 8 HORTICULTURE The Vegetable Garden in Summer Wednesday 6 May or Thursday 7 May 10.30am to 4pm Tutor: Hayley Young It s not too late to get some vegetables growing for abundant crops this autumn and winter. This course will focus on vegetables that can be grown in summer months and how to sow and plant them. Harvesting, using and storing crops from spring sowings will also be explained. A range of practical techniques will be covered including seed sowing, successional sowing and planting out techniques. This is a practical day and attendees will have the chance to practise skills they are shown, so please come prepared with suitable footwear, clothing and gardening gloves. Plant Supports and Staking Friday 8 May 10.30am to 12.30pm Tutor: RHS Formal Team Discover how to support different plants in your garden including grasses, roses, flowers and shrubs. The session will cover why we stake, the different options for staking materials/products and how they are used at Wisley. You will then have the opportunity to have a go using Birch stems on the Mixed Borders, so please come prepared with suitable footwear, clothing and gardening gloves. All materials are provided and included in the price of the course. This course includes the opportunity to make and take home a birch obelisk. Fee: RHS Members 36, Non-RHS Members 49 Event code: Garden History Six Sessions: Tuesday 12 May, 19 May, 2 June, 9 June, 16 June and 23 June 7pm to 9pm Tutor: Stephen Harmer This six-session evening lecture series (2 hours per week) on garden history will look at the first gardens created and why and how they developed. What were the influences that shaped human desire to settle in one place and grow plants? We will go back in time and look at the main fundamental garden design styles that have shaped the development of gardens throughout the ages. As well as the study of their key features we will look at the social, religious, political or economic reasons for their conception. Some gardens of significance will be studied in depth. Garden design styles that will be covered include: Egyptian, Medieval, Persian/Islamic, Italian (Renaissance/Mannerism/Baroque), French (Renaissance/Baroque), The English Landscape Movement, and Arts & Crafts. We will also look at the plant hunters and the use of plants in garden design. The course is intended for anyone with an interest in gardens, plants and garden design. Maximum 50 places *All bookings must be made at the same time Growing Berries, Currants and Soft Fruit Friday 5 June 10.30am to 1pm Soft fruits are immensely rewarding to grow and can produce an abundance of crops even in minimal space. Learn how to get the taste of summer in your garden from strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and more. 9 HORTICULTURE The Productive Greenhouse in Summer Saturday 6 June 10am to 1pm Further your knowledge and skills, develop the use of your greenhouse and make your space more productive. This illustrated talk and practical demonstration will include advice on managing the glasshouse environment throughout the summer, growing salads, fruits and vegetables, a close look at feeding and watering and how to control pests and diseases. Venue: Clore Learning Centre Event code: Growing Tree Fruit Thursday 25 June 10.30am to 1pm Learn how to grow tree fruit successfully in this half-day workshop with RHS Garden Wisley s fruit experts. Looking at tree form and selection, establishment and maintenance, you will feel much more confident about caring for your apples, pears, plums, cherries and more. This session will involve an outside section in Wisley s fruit garden, so please come prepared with suitable clothing and footwear. Event code: Weed Identification and Management Thursday 25 June 2pm to 4pm Tutor: Hayley Young This session will help you to identify common garden weeds in various stages of growth and learn what to do with them. From hand weeding and spraying to suppressing, you will learn the most effective techniques for a variety of situations. Find out ways to use the weeds that grow in your plot. Traditional Japanese woodblock is a sensitive and beautiful print process using watercolour and rice. This ancient method produced the iconic woodblock prints from Japan s Edo Period. The appeal of this technique is in the flow of the brush, and the seemingly effortless minimalistic stroke that suggest a bamboo in the wind. It is an art form of economy, using one brush and one colour to reflect upon nature s harmonies. You will study Wild Orchid, and learn to paint with the Asian brush.
