2 . Workshop and Event Description, including image documentation. Soil testing WORKSHOP : EARTH-DAY SOIL TESTING, APRIL 007. In April, at the annual Earth-day event, Bunche classes clean up their school site, and learn how to reduce, recycle, and reuse. This year co-lab creative in collaboration with Mrs. Olson st grade and Mrs... Walker s 4th grade took soil tests sponsored by the WAM grant. Two tests were taken in the general garden area where vegetables are grown and where one of the beds for the WAM grant planting was planned. These MSU tests taught the children about nutritional levels, ph value, etc. They learned about the importance of decomposing organic matter and why we compost on site. The soil tests taken in the phyto garden area were specifically targeting lead content. A follow up session in the science class introduced the children to the process of phytoremediation and the levels of lead, which all proved to be below the safety of EPA's 400 ppm. This testing helped to prove the effectiveness of the phytoremediation process. (before the remediation, soil levels were up to 000 ppm). WORKSHOP : PLANTING AND EVENT, MAY 007. All Students and teachers participated in this ceremonial planting day: co-lab creative and WAM provided native trees, shrubs and ground cover materials, Mrs. Olson in particular arranged for the event where classes performed in poetry, singing or talks about peace, and the importance of trees. The theme of peace was inspired by Ralph J.Bunche, whom the school is named after. He was a native Detroiter, and first African American Nobel Peace Price winner in 950. The native plants were planted by all classrooms. The same classes also water and maintain the plants.

4 SUMMER MAINTENANCE: Boulders were delivered a week after the planting day to protect bed edges. Unfortunately the Maintenance crew mowing the lawn around the beds had weedwacked in one bed and cut down Redbud and ground cover in this week after the planting day. A replacement check from the landscape firm resulted in co-lab creative facilitating another planting with replacement materials in September 007. No more maintenance damage was done to the plantings after this event and the implementation of the boulder edges. Later in the fall, however, the same lawn mowing company went through the fence around the native phytoremediation garden and mowed part of the area down. This caused a Bladdernut to be cut down among other plant materials. One Serviceberry seems lost do to the dry summer. Plants close to the building were watered some through the summer, others further away were not watered. Most plant material were, however, still doing well this fall. WORKSHOP 3: CO/O CYCLE AND PLANT IDENTIFICATION, FALL 007. co-lab creative with the WAM grant conducted a workshop in describing the importance of trees and other green leaved plants in the photosynthesis and respiration process. It was also discussed how human, plants and animals related to each other. About students created drawings showing the O process, and 5 students painted signs with native plant names. We went outside and identified and placed the signs. We also collected native plant seeds from Black Eyed Susan's and Little Bluestem in the area with the Pagoda Dogwood.
