10,000 Rain Gardens Project Bringing the Benefits of GI to a Wider Audience Neil McLean Chair; Scottish Green Infrastructure Forum and
Introduction This project has key drivers including, of course, green infrastructure and all related benefits. One key focus is surface water management. The target audience includes planners, local authorities, developers, housing associations and others involved in development, amenity, habitat provision and importantly, the public. People like GI; George Square, Glasgow Some more introductions; Scottish Green Infrastructure Forum What is a Rain Garden? The 10,000 Rain Gardens Project
Scottish Green Infrastructure Forum is a diverse group of organisations and individuals committed to promoting and increasing implementation of green infrastructure in Scotland. SEPA Scottish Government Consultants Bug Life Scottish Forum on Natural Capital Regular Participants Scottish Wildlife Trust Glasgow City Council Building Research Establishment Glasgow School of Art Heriot-Watt University Secretariat; Central Scotland Green Network Trust
So What is a Rain Garden? Definition from international workshop; A raingarden is a vegetated area Receive designed to attenuate rainfall So a Rain Garden could be; Garden planter above ground, Garden plot set into ground Swales Basins Ponds Pocket parks Wetlands Etc. and can be; Small Large Local Regional CIRIA Taylor Wimpey Picture; Melbourne Water
Some Other Rain Garden Projects Melbourne Water (Authority) 10,000 Rain Gardens - drought Kansas City 10,000 Rain Gardens CSO reduction Puget Sound, USA 12,000 Rain Gardens water quality Portland Clean Rivers Project Delaware Environmental quality Pictures; Taylor Wimpey/ James Travers
The Terminology. Water Sensitive Urban Design Technical language can be confusing to professionals on occasions.. but more so for the general public Attenuation not attention! Intensive Green Roof Sustainable (Urban) Drainage Systems?
The 10,000 Rain Gardens Scotland Project; A Scoping Study It is acknowledged that the general public have not been engaged in the implementation of SuDS or Green Infrastructure and that this may be a constraint. Workshops and structured interviews concluded that; Despite the recognised importance of SUDS/GI technology in Scotland, efforts to promote the benefits to the general public and key sectors have been relatively limited. The use of Raingardens as an inclusive term for SUDS and GI technology was, on the whole, considered a favorable approach to engaging the public, potential funders, higher management, and a diverse group of stakeholders.
Why 10,000? An achievable target requiring some effort and coordination Previous projects and their success Option to split into 2020 by 2020 for example It is important to realise the additional benefits that Rain Gardens can bring if designed properly; Traffic management, Crime reduction, Health and Well-being, etc. Flood mitigation, Air Quality, Water Quality, Biodiversity, Amenity, COST SHARING = COST SAVING London Avenue, Dalmarnock
Various Initiatives Across Scotland Building Research Establishment Implementation Project to study various different types and configurations Glasgow City Council keen to consider raingardens as retrofitted installations for surface water management Central Scotland Green Network Trust may monitor raingarden installed at their Shotts office Taylor Wimpey - show house at Holytown, North Lanarkshire (Includes Abertay Uni & WSP Parson Brinckerhoff monitoring - research indicates that a small flow attenuating unit can take roof runoff for a 1 in 30 year event and discharge at 1 in 5) Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh 3 types being considered; box planter, inground & natural Courtesy: C&D Associates Also must consider the science for successful functioning and regulatory alignment to include national and local policy and guidance

Next Steps SEPA have sought approval for a CREW * project to visit a major industrial estate to assess scope for retrofits & recommend actions West Lothian Council have agreed to facilitate the project Glasgow City Council likely to retrofit rain gardens into regeneration projects as part of far more extensive MGSDP * aspiration for retrofit units to address capacity issues in sewers, flood risk, & climate change resilience. Project officer position being considered Candidate sites are sought for excellent, uncompromised installations Soft launch Public campaign the bottom up approach Parliamentary reception - Top down promotion through Scottish Government 10k RGs Project NEEDS YOU *CREW *MGSDP - (Scotland s) Centre of Expertise for Waters - Metropolitan Glasgow Strategic Drainage Partnership
