3 THE MISSION To acquire, assimilate and disseminate primary information on the occurrence, distribution and utilization of, and traditional knowledge associated with, wild plant diversity of the country, and maintain linkages with various peer institutions and stake-holders, To conduct research which will cover wide range of issues relating to the plant diversity of India, and to supply information relating to plants for their sustainable utilization for agriculture, horticulture and forestry; trade, industry and medicine, To serve as repository of germ-plasm of wild economic, rare, endemic and threatened plant species in Indian Botanic Garden, Botanic Garden of Indian Republic, associated botanic gardens, seed banks and cryo-banks,

4 To serve as custodian of the national reference collection of plants in internationally recognized herbaria / artifacts in museum and to conserve and preserve botanical archives, To characterize and document all forms of plant diversity based primarily on morphological, anatomical and palynological data, and additionally on molecular data, To build capacity in taxonomy of all groups of plants, and herbarium and museum methods, and carryout awareness and education programmes, To assess and analyze the anthropogenic pressures on plant diversity and to suggest measures for mitigation, and To develop database, both digital and analogue, on various aspects of Indian flora to facilitate informed management and policy decisions.
