2 ABOUT ROOFTOP ROOTS Rooftop Roots is a nonprofit social enterprise working to grow a more just, equitable, and sustainable future by transforming the way we engage with the urban environment. We design, build, and maintain residential and commercial gardens to support healthy nutrition, jobs, and green spaces for underserved communities in the DC area. The proceeds from residential and commercial vegetable gardens and native landscapes help finance our nutrition and sustainability programs, as well as the operation of gardens for underserved communities. THE ROOTS DIFFERENCE Rooftop Roots delivers garden solutions for nearly every environment and landscape. Whether you have poor soil, are working with a small space, or have no gardening experience at all, Rooftop Roots will set you up for success. We take the science of gardening and sustainability seriously, with a strong commitment to sourcing materials as locally and sustainably as possible, while also supporting local businesses whenever and however we can. We believe that when we keep our money and food local, our region thrives and can serve as a model for economic, social, and environmental sustainability. With our seedlings grown in-house, Rooftop Roots offers an assortment of organic, heirloom, and hard-to-find vegetables especially suited for the Mid-Atlantic region. We strive to overlook no detail when it comes to the environment, using organic sustainably-sourced fertilizers and pesticides, reclaimed and ethically-sourced lumber, and custom-blended, locally sourced soil from our friends at Veteran Compost. 3 GARDEN STYLES A successful garden needs three things soil, sun, and water. We ve got the soil figured out, but we need your help with the other two. For a successful garden we recommend at least four hours of sunlight and readily available access to water. From there, we offer a variety of garden options based on your style, space, and taste to keep you growing all year long! RAISED BED GARDENS Our custom built raised beds are great for growing vegetables in a variety of situations. Perfect for families, Rooftop Roots beds are made from safe, non-toxic lumber. During the height of the spring, summer, and fall growing seasons, each bed produces enough vegetables for two adults or three children. Installation includes our specially blended soil, automated irrigation, and initial planting of the vegetables of your choice! BALCONY & ROOFTOP GARDENS Great for small spaces and city living. Rooftop Roots will work with you to create a one-of-a-kind garden that is not only beautiful, but incredibly productive too. Rooftop Roots offers a wide selection of vegetable varieties especially suited for growing in containers and urban environments. So if you never thought you could grow a perfectly delicious, vine-ripened tomato in the city, think again! LAWN TO GARDEN CONVERSIONS Grass is the single largest crop grown in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, but we are working to change that. Traditional lawns and gardens are significant contributors to air and water pollution through the intensive use of chemicals, fertilizers, water, and gas powered equipment. We believe converting portions of your lawn into an edible or native landscape is a great way to improve your yard s ecological impact, aesthetics, and biodiversity. Starting with a soil analysis, we will create a custom tailored plan that will enhance your soil fertility, composition, and overall health to create conditions for optimally growing vegetables and native plants year after year. We recommend allotting at least 100 ft.2 of space. NATIVE PLANT & CONSERVATION LANDSCAPING Interested in adding elements to your yard that will reduce pollution and promote ecological sustainability? Native plants are particularly well adapted for local soils and environment. This means better resistance to insects and diseases, less watering, and fewer pesticides and fertilizers entering into the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Not to mention, native plants provide critical wildlife habitat with essential food and shelter for a variety of birds, pollinators, and other local wildlife. With a B.S. in Wildlife Biology and M.S. in Environmental Science and Policy, Rooftop Roots founder Thomas Schneider possesses the skills and expertise to analyze your site s existing conditions and create a functional habitat that mimics natural plant groupings. Our sustainable landscaping practices are perfect for those problem areas that suffer from erosion, poor drainage, or poor soil.
