1 The Watercan Post Paradise Garden Club, Inc. April 2018 Editor: Adrianne Ayres Today s Program Dr. Deborah Mathews has a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from UC Riverside, where she was a researcher and faculty member until her retirement in Her talk will focus on common plant viruses and their symptoms, how to recognize them and how to manage and prevent them in your gardens and landscape. Dr. Mathews main focus for 30 years was on viruses of plants, but, at the end of her career, was also a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist who trained and did outreach to commercial growers, nurseries, Master Gardeners, and Garden Clubs. Mark Your Calendar PGCI May 7th BOARD MEETING May Newsletter Submission Deadline May 4th Remember JANUARY, MARCH, MAY, JULY, SEPTEMBER and NOVEMBER are the months we have a plant sale, a benefit drawing & horticulture display of plants from your garden. President s Message Julie Jones, President Thank-you to all who donated camellias last month. This is a tradition for PGCI and it is wonderful to see it continue through your involvement. To me, April means we are over the hump. Sunshine and warm days will begin to out number the cold and rainy days. (which I know are necessary for our gardens to florish but...) We see flowering red bud, quince, forsythia, along with hyacinths, tulips and, of course, daffodils. What a grand time for the senses! We have our Garden Tour coming up in June (did you all know that?). So lets ask Mother Nature to give us a nice April week-end. I'm sure you know what it takes to put on an event this size. Check out the sign-up sheets at the front table and see where you can best donate your time, maybe even on more than one project. If you have any questions please connect with a Tour Chair person (see page? for a list) or find me. The money we raise not only gives us the means to continue our Butte College Scholarship Program but also that Paradise Garden Club itself and all its parts can continue. Please become a volunteer. Happy Spring and may the Easter Bunny find his way to your door. A Community Beautification opportunity is coming up. For the Love Paradise / Earth Day events, the PGCI will be working at the Paradise Senior Center, again. There will be more chips to spread in the parking lot dividers and the cypress plants will be removed that are planted next to the building to improve fire safety. Please wear your Love Paradise shirts, bring shovels and rakes and help us help our Senior Center look just a little bit better. 9:00 AM, Saturday, April 21st. BE THERE! Ward Habriel Paradise Garden Club, Inc. (PGCI) is a member of the Butte District CGCI and the Pacific Region National Garden Club, Inc. 2 Convention Corner This month the CC article focuses on the Buttes District and recent meetings. Our Director, Ilene Herringer, has a close relationship with the CGCI President (her daughter) and therefore gets some inside information before anybody else. She also has the chance to profit from the President s experience in a variety of disciplines. So, Ilene asked the President (daughter Krystal) to be the guest speaker at the March 16th BD meeting. Krystal s presentation covered the issue of lost memberships and the options for clubs to increase membership. In round numbers, CGCI lost 1000 members between the 2017 Winter Board meeting and this years. We will be seeing more suggestions from CGCI for clubs to use to promote membership increases. In the meantime, I suggest you PGCI members read the CGCI News Letter Golden Garden E- News because it is full of articles contributed by other clubs all around the State. If you didn t see it, I will have a reprint of the Jayne Locas article about the start of the Daffodils Across the Ridge project. It was printed in the April edition of the GGENews. Ward Habriel, CGCI Director Chair, CGCI Water Conservation Committee Flowers of the month Daisies and Sweet Peas When someone is talking about a Daisy, what specifically do they mean? Usually, they just mean a small white round flower with a round yellow or blue center. When botanists refer to daisies, they mean an entire group of plant species in the plant family called Asteraceae, which also includes aster flowers, ragweed and sunflowers. Daisies can be found in many parts of the world, including North America, Europe and Africa. At first, it can seem that there can be as many meanings for daisies as there are species of daisies. However, the most generally accepted meanings are: Innocence, especially with white daisies with yellow or pale centers. Purity also shown by daisies that are as white as possible. New beginnings, which is why they are often found in bouquets for new mothers or as gifts for children. True love because each daisy flower is really two flowers blended together in harmony. That the sender can keep a secret. Keeping a secret is one way a person can exhibit that they truly love another. The modern English word daisy comes from an Old English word that s impossible to spell and next to impossible to pronounce. The important thing is that the Old English word meant day s eye because daisy flowers only opened during the daytime. The name Sweet Pee is believed to have first been used by the poet Keats ( ). Sweet peas were very popular in the late 1800s and are often considered the floral emblem for Edwardian England. Sweet peas were an important part of floral arrangements for every wedding and dinner party at that time. Dried petals of sweet peas was also one of the most important ingredients for potpourris. Sweet peas come in over 250 varieties. Annual varieties prefer full sun, regular watering and soil with plenty of humus. Perennial sweet peas survive in average soils with moderate watering. Sweet peas are wonderfully fragrant and were originally grown in the fields of Sicily. Most types grow from 1-5' tall, though some may reach 6'. Sweet peas are climbing plants that do well on supporting structures. The delicate perfume of sweet peas combined with the variety of colors available made this flower the floral sensation of the Victorian era. Sweet Pea Toxicity. The seeds of sweet peas are mildly poisonous containing lathyrogens that, if ingested in large quantities, can cause a condition called Lathyrus. There is a related species called Lathyrus sativus, which is cultivated for consumption by humans and animals. PGCI Page 2 The Watercan Post April 2018

4 Safe Smoothies Carolyn Matheny, Seed Saver Special Chair I am not a Master Gardener, but I am a master at puttering in the garden. I also love seeds. They are fascinating, beautifully designed, a symbol of hope, and utterly irresistible to me. So much so that I will gather seeds from anywhere, anytime. For example, while I was dusting the top of the television, I knocked over a sweet arrangement of real, dried lavender stuck into a clay pot that had resided there for a few years. It fell to the floor, not breaking the pot, but the dried seeds of the lavender scattered everywhere. Eureka! Which is the name of my vacuum cleaner; but I used a broom instead and swept up the seeds and planted them. This was January, so, using the winter sowing method, I planted the seeds into a milk jug that was cut in half and filled with a seed starting soil mix. So far, they have not germinated. Should I be patient or impatient? I decided to be both. I planted winter squash seeds in the same jug last week. Later, doing some more research, I learned that lavender seeds can take over two months to germinate and require a cold stratification period. Well, since they were planted in January, they should have had the cold period. And, since we are approaching the two months due date, will I see the lavender first or the squash? I don t make this stuff up, and I really do have a life, but I am in puttering heaven. I check that jug every day now. Perhaps the Eureka moment should have signaled to me to vacuum those seeds, but what s the fun in that? Have You Paid your 2018 Club Membership Dues? Creative Container Gardens It's not too late to join in hands-on-fun of creating a mini-garden for your 2018 Garden Tour Benefit Drawing. Simply fill a container with potting soil, add several complimentary plants, and perhaps an accessory or two, to establish a theme for your garden. Bring your completed Container Garden and information sheet to the May Club meeting where members will have a first-showing preview. You will then take your garden home to care for it until time to deliver it to the Tour location I will keep you informed. I'm looking forward to seeing the wonderful display next month. Our little gardens are truly a highlight of our tour. Thank you, fellow gardeners, Carol Mordock "Today as in the time of Pliny and Columella, the hyacinth flourishes in Wales, the periwinkle in Illyria, the daisy on the ruins of Numantia; while around them cities have changed their masters and their names, collided and smashed, disappeared into nothingness, their peaceful generations have crossed down the ages as fresh and smiling as on the days of battle." - Edgar Quinet, Philosophy of Human History, 1825 PGCI Page 4 The Watercan Post April 2018

6 Gardening Questions? Call the Master Gardeners Hotline at Wednesday 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and Thursday 1:00 to 4:00 PM Or, drop by the Butte County Cooperative Extension Office: 2279-B Del Oro Avenue Oroville, CA You never can tell what's at the root of the problem. Call Master Gardeners to help solve the problem. Beware and Take Care Here are five (5) great reasons, other than rose thorns, garden soil, etc., why gardeners should get a tetanus shot: 1. Tetanus can kill you: The bacterial infection in your body produces a toxin that affects the central nervous system. It can cause seizures and brain damage. 2. Tetanus can make you seriously ill: If it doesn t kill you, it can cause contractions or seizures strong enough to break a bone. Hence the old-fashioned name lock jaw the jaw is one of the bones that can snap if the muscles in the head and neck contract during a tetanus-induced seizure. It s painful, ugly, and horrible. 3. Only a little bit of the toxin can kill you. It s a poison, after all. You can t build up an immunity to it, and a small amount can overwhelm you. 4. You re sick before you know it: It takes three to 21 days for tetanus symptoms to show up, and by then you may have forgotten all about the original injury that allowed the bacteria to enter your body. That makes identifying the wound site all the more difficult for your doctor. 5. Vaccines are cheap. Death isn t. Vaccination for tetanus is commonplace, inexpensive, and safe. This is one vaccine that s been around for a long time and is relatively safe for adults. The worst side effect is soreness in the injection site and arm for a day or two afterwards, especially if you re getting booster shots. If you haven t had a tetanus shot in a while, or you can t remember when you last had your tetanus shot, please speak with your doctor. Make an appointment for your annual check up and ask during the check up about tetanus boosters. Don t risk death or serious illness just because of a little shot. All it takes is a bit of buried barbed wire hitting your hand, a cut from a nail in an old board, a rose thorn, to make you seriously ill. If you can prevent it, why not? Gardeners should get a tetanus shot if they can, or a booster shot. Remember to take good care of yourself your family and plants depend on you!
