This wetlands calendar was created by students in connection with their science curriculum. This wetlands calendar was created by students in connection with their science curriculum. Students and teachers saw a need to support the wetlands organizations in Texas as a result of their studies. Profits from the sale of this calendar will be donated to Wetlands Center on the Texas A&M campus in Galveston, Texas. The authors and illustrators are the students in Mrs. Bloom s third grade class at Dr. Winn Murnin Elementary in San Antonio, Texas. The project was directed by Sandra Longoria, Instructional Technologist, and Barbie Cahill, Librarian. Our thanks to Checko s Copies for printing the calendar and to the Environmental Protection Agency for availability of information.

A bog is a swampy spongy area. There are bogs in different states. When plants die, they combine with other dead plants. These dead plants are called peat. The peat in a bog can be up to 45 feet deep. A lot of insects live in bogs. Because the soil is so poor, some bog plants catch insects for food. We are destroying wetlands by polluting, making stores, houses, and streets. Also by hunting the animals in the wetlands there will be less animals witch will cause little of those animals to be born. Boats can pollute water by leaving behind gasoline and oil. We can stop by not polluting and recycling our trash. Also stop logging all the trees. Do not go swimming in wetlands. We can also protect them by making less buildings.

In a bog you might see a frog, bird, or an insect. Keep your eyes open for frogs and insects. See if you can find a bird. It would be cool to see birds and frogs. I would like to see a frog in a bog.

In a bog you might see a Pitcher plant or water lilies. Keep your eyes open for Butter worts and duck weeds. See if you can find a Sundew. It would be real cool to see Orchids and Blue bells. I would like to see a tree in a bog!

Marshes a r e wetlands where trees and bushes usually do not grow. However, many kinds of animals live in marshes. The water is shallow. They are found around lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams. Some marshes contain salt water, but other marshes contain fresh water. We are destroying wetlands by throwing our trash in the wetlands and by filling them in with dirt. We are also building houses over them. We destroy wetlands by going fishing, building streets, and hunting in the wetlands. They can be destroyed by cutting down trees, our air and pollution. We destroy more by boating and recreational activities.

In a marsh you might see a frog, fish, or a muskrat. Keep your eyes open for birds and otters. See if you can find a dragon fly. It would be really cool to see beavers and a turtle. I would like to see a heron in a tree.

In a marsh you might see a pickle weed, cattails, and salt grass. Keep your eyes open for water lily and Irish. See if you can find a cord grass. Also, you can find a pitcher plant. A pitcher plant can kill other plants.

We are destroying wetlands by hunting animals. We also destroy wetlands by building streets, homes, stores and by throwing trash in the water. We also destroy wetlands by fishing in wetlands because you can disturb or destroy the living things there. We can protect a wetland by not throwing trash in the water. Do not hunt animals anymore. Do not go fishing or boating in wetlands. Also, no mining, draining, or constructing in wetlands to protect them.

In a prairie pothole you might see a crocodile, muskrat, or a bird. Keep your eyes open for reptiles and fish. See if you can find a pigeon. It will be really cool to see cranes and a duck. I would like to see a crocodile in a prairie pothole.

It would be really cool to see pickerel weed in a prairie pothole. Keep your eyes open many kinds of grasses. You will also see bulrush and cattails in the prairie potholes.

A swamp is a wet area of land where trees and shrubs grow and where surface water is present for at least part of the year. Swamps occur worldwide in lowland, coastal areas, and near slowly flowing rivers. They have more wood plants than marshes. Swamps have either fresh water or salt water. Some people destroy wetlands, which is not good. Pollution is one thing that destroys wetlands. Some factories can kill wetland birds, other animals, and plants. When people camp, hunt, and go fishing it can destroy wetlands. Building houses can destroy wetlands, too. Wetlands are getting destroyed because of our trash. We should not destroy wetlands. We should save wetlands. We should not cut down trees from wetlands. We should not build houses there. We should camp in a different place. We shouldn t fish there. We should keep the water of the wetlands clean. Those are some pretty good ideas.

It would be really cool to see a sea cow and an alligator. Keep your eyes open for a beaver. I would like to see an egret in a swamp. See if you can find a snail. In a swamp you might see a Roseate spoonbill.

In a swamp you might see a plant or different things. Keep your eyes open for many different plants. See if you could find a swamp rose? It will be really cool to see a grass pink and a tupelo. I would like to see a golden club in a swamp.
