Thanks to the Education Committee persons: Mimi Sakal, Peggy Tingle and Phyllis Kowal for their dedication and commitment to this project. In addition, the Board also approved two additional grants of $250 each to be awarded to Mirror Lakes Autistic Pre-K Students and the Veterans Clinic in Sunrise. (from President, Claudette Hammond) Wonder Gardens, LLC Tropical Fruit & Citrus Trees, Native & Butterfly Plants Roxie & Lenny, Owners Sears-Broward Mall / If you haven t started a vegetable garden yet, it s not too late. It is cool enough now for cauliflower eggplant, cabbage, broccoli, tomatoes and snap beans. If you don t have space, you can grow any of these in big pots. A good sunny location is most important. In December, we do have to worry about freezes, of course we don t get many, but it only takes one freeze to hurt everything. Make sure all of your plants are watered the night before and cover the plants with sheets or black plastic bags. They have to be removed the next day. Roses and any other hardy, woody plant like Ixora, Crotons and Podocarpus can be planted now. Since the Poinsettia is our main flower for the holidays, I thought I would give a few tips on care for inside and outside. Inside, keep close to a window, the color will last for 2 months. Keep moist. Outside, protect them from full sun and windy areas. After the holidays, plant them in half sun and half shade. Enjoy them next year at this time. I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas.

4 Other Plantation Garden Club Events The Plantation Garden Club did a beautiful job decorating a Christmas tree at the Plantation Heritage Museum. Thanks to Peggy Tingle, Cathy Ayala, Phyllis Kowal, Mimi Sakal and Paulette Kandel! On Saturday, November 21 The Plantation Garden Club put together a lovely float for the It s a Wonderful Life in Plantation Holiday Parade!

About the Month of December The birth flower for December is the paperwhite narcissus. The flower is a cousin to the daffodil flower and means that the recipient of the paperwhites is sweet. December's full Moon was called the Full Cold Moon or Full Long Night s Moon because it is this time of year that the nights are longest and darkest. The Moon is above the horizon a long time. December is also AIDS Awareness Month, Root Vegetables, Quince, Watermelon, Tomato, Winter Squash and Exotic Fruits Month!
