SECONDARY BENEFITS OF STORMWATER BMPS Growing Sustainable Communities, October

STORMWATER BMPS BENEFITS - AGENDA Stormwater Management Traditional Impacts Stormwater BMPs Primary Benefits Secondary Benefits Case Studies

STORMWATER MANAGEMENT Traditional Approach Conveyance system of curbs, pipes, open ditches, pump stations, detention basins, etc. MINNPOST

STORMWATER MANAGEMENT Stormwater Management Hydrologic Impacts USEPA: Protecting Water Quality from Urban Runoff California Water & Land Use Partnership

STORMWATER BMPS Stormwater Management Traditional Approach More Water Faster Higher peak flow rates Greater total volume Increased water velocities Flooding Erosion Degraded water quality Degradation of habitat

STORMWATER BMPS Stormwater Management Best Management Practices (BMPs) BMPs: is a technique, measure, or structural control that is used for a given set of conditions to manage the quantity and improve the quality of stormwater runoff in the most cost-effective manner. BMPs Should: 1.Reduce peak flows 2.Reduce runoff volume 3.Remove pollutants Post-Development = Pre-Development 1.Discharge Rates 2.Volumes 3.Loadings

STORMWATER BMPS TYPES Infiltration systems (trenches, basins, bioretention systems, bioswales) Constructed wetland systems Detention systems Wet-detention systems Filtration systems (sand filters) Vegetated systems (grassed swales, vegetated filter strips)

STORMWATER BMPS PRIMARY BENEFITS Primary Benefits Water quality treatment Water quantity reduction and attenuation -mitigate flooding -prevent or reduce erosion -minimize pollutants -preserve habitat

Aesthetic appeal Creation of habitat Resolution of secondary issues Cost savings Expand funding options/opportunities Educational/awareness opportunities Community benefits

Aesthetic Appeal Big improvements Very flexible (vegetation, design, elements) Lots of options American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists The Habitat Network

Creation of Habitat Aquatic, wetland, upland habitat Connect existing habitat Pollinators, songbirds, insects, waterfowl Inputs of irrigation, fertilizer, or pesticides minimized or eliminated

Resolution of Secondary Issues Peripheral Intentional or unintentional Save Money Cut costs as compared to traditional stormwater management Cut other costs, such as heating and cooling (e.g. green roof), maintenance and repair Deserves careful consideration

Leverage and expand funding opportunities Local, state, and national levels Small to large $ Examples WQI, Municipal/County Cost-Shares

Educational opportunities Varied audiences and settings Hands-on learning Develop community awareness

Community Benefits Local aesthetics Community engagement, participation, and partnerships Preserve or enhance open spaces Creative environment
