The Ozaukee Washington Land Trust (OWLT) is a nonprofit conservation organization. Our mission is to protect and preserve the natural areas, open spaces and rural character of Ozaukee and Washington Counties. The Mequon Nature Preserve is OWLT s largest property. The Preserve was created through a partnership between the City of Mequon, the Greater Milwaukee Foundation and OWLT. Discover the preserve on your own and visit the new Observation Tower. Stop by the Education center to pick up a map. 9:00 am 3:00 pm Baby Buckthorn Pull Eradicate an alien invader-buckthorn! Work in a beautiful forest with your fellow volunteers learning why and how to remove buckthorn from the forest. Enjoy making a large impact in a short time period. 9:00 am Noon Tree Planting Help restore and reforest a native Wisconsin forest at the Mequon Nature Preserve with fellow volunteers. One thousand trees will be planted around a newly restored wetland and another 1,000 on the north side of the preserve. 9:00 am Noon Noon 3:00 pm Wisconsin Native Plants Native plants have existed over thousands of years in a specific ecosystem. This workshop, presented by Johnson s Nursery, will help you gather ideas and information to help you incorporate Wisconsin native plants into your landscape. 10:30 am Noon Rain Garden- How to Help protect Lake Michigan by planting a rain garden in your back yard. It is Mother Nature s way of reducing manmade problems like polluted storm water runoff, while adding beauty and attracting birds, butterflies and wildlife. 1:00 2:30 pm Wildlife Monitoring Wildlife monitoring helps track the progress of habitat restoration efforts. Learn how to monitor native reptiles, amphibians, birds and invertebrates. Demonstrations will be given on OWLT methods of snake surveying, frog call identification, and bird monitoring. Training will conclude with outdoor activities. 1:30 3:00 pm Land Preservation Understand the basics of land preservation and the range of methods used to preserve our landscapes for future generations. Learn about how OWLT protects these Lands and what you can do to help. 2:30 4:00 pm Volunteer Recognition Dinner Annual OWLT volunteer recognition dinner. Mary is an art teacher who has taught for 20 years and travels to bring art and natural science programs to a different type of classroom setting. Going Buggy is all about, you guessed it, BUGS! - - How they creep, and how they crawl. The program is all about the arthropod family: insects, spiders, myriapods and crustaceans. This is a one and a half hour activity with everyone working on a creepy crawly mural. 10:30 am Noon The Tortoise and The Hare presented by Mary Tooley. The originator of Art In A Suitcase, Mary s unique original programs have reached over 20,000 children. The Tortoise And The Hare will teach the children how to tell a tortoise from other kinds of turtles and a hare from a rabbit. Fabulous facts about four kinds of turtles and different types of hares. This is a one and a half hour activity with everyone working on a metal tooling project that will be taken home. 1:30 3:00 pm Nature Scavenger Hunt for Families Come Get off the Path and explore the Mequon Nature Preserve. From a 40+ foot Observation Tower, to ephemeral wetlands, native Wisconsin forests and an array of woodland and wetland creatures excitement awaits you at every corner! Activities and treasures!
