PLANTING INFO... Environmental Edition, Mary Lovings, Editor Horticulture Edition, Gail Berthe, Editor Landscape Design Edition, Jackie Fulmer, Editor Vol. III, No. 18, Landscape Design Edition October 2018 The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. Beautification Conservation Education (Editor s Note A perfect drive from Georgia and an experience not to be missed) The Beautiful Birmingham Botanical Gardens Take a short trip to the city of Birmingham, Alabama and discover its many beautiful parks and gardens. Once known as a center for steel production, Birmingham is now famous for its medical center and some of the best doctors and researchers in the nation. The downtown area has seen a complete makeover with many opportunities for fine dining and upscale apartments and condos. With this increase in town living, parks and walking areas have become more sought after. Though not in the downtown area, the Botanical Gardens offers a scenic and peaceful site for hikes or family strolls for those who live in or around the city. A Brief History of the Gardens: The Gardens began as a dream for then Birmingham Mayor Jimmy Morgan. In 1960, he commissioned the first master plan for the Gardens. 1
Conservatory: December 1962 saw the opening of the largest conservatory in the Southeast. Designed by Charles McCauley, the curved glass houses totaled three hundred six feet in length. The center portion rose thirty-three feet in height. The low bid for this project was $161,000. After nearly fifty years of use, the conservatory was in great need of renovation. It was closed for three years while a 1.3 million dollar restoration project took place. It was reopened in February 2014 and continues to be the centerpiece of the gardens. On April 1, 1962, a floral clock was given to the city to add to the beauty of the front of the Conservatory. Its value was $152,232 and was a gift of Mrs. Horace Hammond. The Tea House: The famous Japanese gardens with a tea house were part of the original plan. The first house had been a part of the 1965 New York World s Fair. In 1967, it was donated to Birmingham by the Japanese Trade Association. It was reconstructed in Birmingham. However, in 1992 because of exposure, insects and climate conditions, the tea house became unusable and had to be dismantled. In the same year the City set 2
aside $380,000 for a new tea house. In 1993, the World Commemorative Association of Osaka for Expo presented a grant of $165,000 to the city. This grant was for the completion of the tea house and all of the gardens that surrounded it. All parts of the tea house were built in Japan and then reassembled at the Botanical Gardens by the same team. The Japanese Gardens: The Federated Garden Clubs of Jefferson County, the Birmingham Audubon Society and the Birmingham chapter of the National Association of Accountants as well as the city s children and its citizens provided the funding for the Japanese Gardens which would surround the tea house. The gardens would include cherry trees, bonsai, and stones with a Japanese lantern at its center. Other Major Events: *In December of 1965, an illuminated reflecting pool and fountain were added. *The Birmingham Botanical Society Women s Auxiliary was founded in February, *The Spring Fiesta plant sale and fund raiser began in the spring of The project was supported by the Third District of the Federated Garden Clubs of Alabama. *The Garden Center building was dedicated in *In 1973, the Horace Hammond Library was established. This library is still active. Research can be conducted here and books may be borrowed. 3
*In the early 90 s, two estate donations began the endowment fund which remains well over one million dollars. *The Sculpture Garden was begun and continues to grow. *In 1986 the Kaul Wildflower Garden was dedicated. It greets visitors from throughout the United States and abroad with constantly changing colors. *Many other gardens and elements have been added throughout the years. A Photo Tour of the Gardens 4 The Kayser Lily Pool The still water of the pool is mirrored in the slate water wall. The sounds of falling water offer a soothing effect for garden visitors. The water gardens include day and night-blooming lilies, lotus, papyrus, fish and snails. The pool was a gift of the Kayser family.
5 Gigantic planters sit on one of the terraces with a scaled down replica of Birmingham s famous statue of Vulcan, the god of the forge.
Give yourself two days to walk the entire gardens. For a break, have lunch at the lovely first-class restaurant on the grounds. Looking toward the rear of the conservatory and the greenhouses Look out! There s a rabbit in the garden! 6
An Upper Terrace Garden looking toward the Lily Pool The soothing sound of water is everywhere. This fountain is on an upper terrace. The Bog Garden (below) 7
And one of the best parts of the Birmingham Botanical Gardens Admission is FREE! ****************************************** A few more words from the father of Landscape Architecture: Frederick Law Olmstead *All Olmstead quotes from Olmstead, Writings on Landscape, Culture and Society Olmstead on parks and towns: If I ask myself where I have experienced the most complete gratification of this instinct in public and out of doors, among trees, I find that it has been in the promenade of the Champs Elysee. As closely following it, I should name other promenades of Europe, and our own New York parks. I have studiously watched the latter for several years. I have several times seen fifty thousand people participating in them; and the more I have seen of them, the more highly have I been led to estimate their value as means of counteracting the evils of town life. ************************************************** Add the Gardens to your contacts and make the trip to Birmingham: 2612 Park Lane Road Birmingham, Alabama *All photos in this article belong to the editor. 8
